How much power/influence does the Pope have these days?

This new Pope seems like he might actually be a decent sort of chap, does he have the power to make Catholicism an actual force for good?

Except for his links with Jorge Videla's dictatorship you mean. And opposition to gay marriage, etc...

Not that this makes him horrid, I mean, odds are that he's something of an improvement over the last. But there's a lot of "meet new boss, same as old boss" at play.

There are a lot of issues i still have with him from his bishoping days, and until the issue of child molestation in the vatican is addressed absolutely no pope will get so much as a nod of approval from me.
