I'm really in the mood to play vanilla but this specific gem of a feature is always kicking my arse, is there an easy way to delete it?

DFHack has it as a tweak, I think.

In DFHACK there is the command "removebadthoughts".

I hotkey it and fix what I consider are unreasonable negative emotions on the behalf of my citizenry. Orcs repel a complete elven invasion and then butcher and eat 45 elven invaders, plus get 45 sets of mithril weaponry and armor, but yet they have an emotional meltdown because someone brought a baby into the battle and an elf shot it with an arrow?

DFHACK contains a lot of tools to fix what I consider irrational game mechanics. You can choose to use them or to not use them, depending upon your feelings about it.
