What features do YOU want in an online die roller?
« on: April 20, 2013, 01:10:33 am »

I am in the process of moving/updating my online die rolling website. And as this is the only active gaming forum I am involved in at the moment, I thought I would ask here.

Is there any feature you would like to see in a die rolling web service?

Is there any feature that is a must have feature?

Is there any feature that would make you a regular user?

If this post in not appropriate here, I can move it to creative projects.

(This might fit better in Creative Projects, yeah.)

There's a few things.

Being able to add modifiers to the dice would be really useful, for starters.
Depending on how the dice roller works, adding custom dice might be a good idea--d1,000's for the Metamorphica, for instance.
Depending on how the site itself works, being able to make an account and save custom dice/sets of dice to roll at once/modifiers to dice would be pretty neat. Also depending on the site, the ability to "save" the results like Invisible Castle (and, to my knowledge, no other site) does would be useful.

Saving custom dice rolls to an account would be very useful.

The good news is that most of those features, or something very like them are already in.

custom dice: check. You can roll a 1d9001 as easily as you  can roll 1d6.

ability to roll multiple dice at once: check. You can do 6*3d6 to get 6 results for 3d6 or 1d8,1d4,1d77 to get results for different types of dice.

Saving die rolls? check. The original dicebox was online in 2003 with saved rolls before invisible castle. I was not however the first to do so, I was preceded by the original Vacuum Elemental die roller. I believe that went live sometime between 99 and 2001 and was used extensively in the Wizards of the Coast play by post RPG forums that he ran back in the day.

custom profile for your frequently used dice? Not something I thought of, but certainly doable. The lowest impact method would be to save them in a cookie, but an account based option should be possible in order to preserve those preferences if you move from one computer to another.

It would be cool to have a built in dice probability calculator, but there are other websites that can do that fairly quickly, so perhaps it's too much work for too little gain.

It's also not that hard to do mentally.

(Divide the die size by two, add 0.5, and add the modifier.)

I've created a thread in creative projects for this.

And note that you want to see what I have so far for the dice roller, it is at http://dicebox.org/Dice/Roll for advanced dice rolling or http://dicebox.org/Dice/Roll/Classic for simple dice rolling.

FYI, it doesn't seem to be functional.

yea, i think I might have done a bad publish last night. I need a different web.config for debugging vs production. And either visual studio isn't smart enough to switch or I have the syntax wrong for what parts should be included/excluded. Its the first thing I plan on doing after work. It should be up in an hour or a little after that.

OK... Got it worked out. My build process is fixed, and an error causing a roll to fail for an empty name has been corrected... I should probably know better than to try and publish at 2am.

You may want to add an option to see the actual values of the dice rolled.  For example, instead of 1d6 + 3 returning 5, have it return 2 + 3 = 5.  This could be a toggleable option.

To some degree, it is already an option if you use the roller at dicebox.org/Dice/Roll. You can use comma separated list of dice or the * operator to reroll a number of dice. 6*3d6 will produce a list of 6 results for 3d6 and 1d4,1d6,1d20+32 will produce a list of 6 results.

Adding the option to the classic rolling page is definitely possible.

It will be the next feature I add.
