Poll

Should Scaleplate/Chitinplate/Shellplate reduced to "Scale/Chitin/Shell", and "Rigid X-plate" to "X-plate". It would shorten names a lot.

Yes. Text gets cut off too often.
No. I dont care/like the names as they are.
Dont you have anything better to do then making such tiny adjustements?

Makes sense.

Btw, has anyone else noticed the sprite for Dire Wolves looks more like a giant pink bunny rather than a wolf. Using Phoebus if that makes a difference.

Yeah... I ordered a bunch of them to see if they can be War-trained, and I think I sold them back when I saw what they looked like.. :)

Orcs don't have their own goats ,pigs, chickens and stuff, so for that reason I'd prefer a toggle.  Although no big deal making more livestock (or copypaste goats into the tiagapets file) if need be.

Dwarven Caravan Exploit: Next update will no longer have lifemancers, only healer which cant resurrect. But you can hire the guards straight of the caravan, they will join your fort then.

Okay I get fixing an exploit, but removing lifemancers? Nooooo. Those were my favourite people to adventure as (oddly enough they're called earthbound if you adventure as them). The ability to resurrect teammates and heal nerve damage so that you could walk again and shit was invaluable. Never really used them in fortress mode though. If my dwarves died they likely died for a reason, such as tantruming, and I didn't want a second chance at a tantrum spiral.

After some experimenting, what exactly would be a reason to use higher tier leather armors?
Except for fluffy reasons they seem somewhat useless compared to how complicated getting them is.

I though that upgraded leather was supposed to be decent (or rather, still pretty shitty considering the other materials the mod introduces) armor material, thats main selling point was that it was light.

Well, it weights more than steel. Am I missing something here? I though they were tailor-made (haha) for using with marksdwarves that dont get the usual benefits of strenght and armor user.

They are iron-grade. Density of them is 7850, same as steel btw, so they cant be heavier, they are the same wheight.

Lamellar is irongrade.
Rigid Chitin is irongrade, but light.
Rigid Shell is between iron- and steelgrade, but heavier.
Rigid Scale is irongrade, but fireproof.
Bonerattle is irongrade and adds not_living, to fool undeads into not attacking. (kobold mode only)

harden leather (R)
harden letaher (R)
laminate with horn (R)
laminate with shell (R)
craft lamellar cloak (R)
craft lamellar robe (R)

=> half decent protection for civs and a nice extra layer for the military (hard to make metal cloaks or other "cover" layer armor).  I guess opinions vary. In another thread simultaneously there was another poster commenting that lamellar cloaks were like wearing a personal forcefield ;)

That's the orc coming out of you Smak.

From memory, the dwarf variant requires:

upgrade leather I (boil in oil - from mineral oily rocks, tallow or pressed from plants)
upgrade leather II (studs from vermin, tooth, horn or bone)
upgrade leather III (lamellar) - basically sew it together

So you need two barrels or oil, some crap and some thread to make a couple of bits of lamellar leather. Its rather a monumental pain in the arse.

Orc Fortress - making Lamellar is easy, and I use it to cover all my spearmen militia and bowmen

With their short hairy cousins the dwarves... meh, too much effort, just smelt some steal already and make mithril cloaks.

HA HA  :)

Yeah, the joke was on us.
I suspect that a lot of folks after that “lamellar force field” comment went running to the raws with “What did I miss?  What did I miss?”

It’s still leather.

The rigid scale(plate) is quite useful when facing down certain Beasties in the Colosseum; I Wish List all I can.  But the mod intent, imo, was to make people ‘work with what you have,’ upgrading as it becomes possible and being resigned to casualties along the way.  Encourage ingenuity in the use of traps, metal-clad warriors/sacrificial lambs, libraries, Garrisons, that sort of thing.  Nothing coming too easily.  The author rather firmly believes that nobody should be able to conquer Hell with a few squads of DangerRoom trained, Legendary-in-all-skills, steel-clad troops.  As has been done. (1)   In “the Official Masterwork Succession Game” now ongoing, one dwarf had his prayers answered with fanciful, Bad.Ass.Armor.  But that dwarf is not Top Gun, as perhaps expected.  That honor goes to a dwarf with great agility.  It is rumored that in an upcoming vanilla release, Toady One will separate the dodging and striking and such but for now, a fully steel-clad dwarf without high armor wearing skills is effectively a steel-clad decoy, getting pummeled while his squadmates actually score hits (although, one mobile decoy is not entirely without merit).  And there are still those unprotected parts (fingers, back teeth … ).  Hey, I was one that took the bait.  Good joke.
                                ____________________________

(1) Of course, if one delves down and conquers ClownTown with a water or magma cannon, that’s completely different.   :)    Muy dorfio.

On the poll, I voted to make the pets optional.  I tend to edit the raws in my game so I start with a mix of pets from Dwarf, Orc and Kobold lists.  With a selection of so many superb animals, I don't tend to bother embarking with cows and such...  I already burn up silly amounts of fps on large herds as it is.

So making what animals are available an option in the interface would certainly save me some minor raw editing.

I actually dont care for the animals, either way. I never embark with any as I find any benefit from the animal can be traded for. That leaves the only use for them being cannon fodder. Yet because of fps, I would rather that cannon fodder be able to work and haul stuff around (i care not for numerous worker deaths, I can just buy more). Just my two sense anyways. As with the golems, and turrets and mines, I have no real need for things like pets and cows. Why go for a cow when you can have a steel butchering machine and then can just buy beef. Also as to the leather thing, I dont find it that hard of a system. You just need a farm a fisher or two and use trade for leather. I can have my army of thirty guys kitted out with steel armour and leather cloaks/undergarments by the end of second year (if i need them that quickly). But ya just my two cents.

That still holds for civilians and accidents, plus it was cloaks only, didnt actually use proper armor then.
Cloaks for protecting teeth it is.

I'm pretty sure cloaks in general tend to act like personal forcefields, even cloth ones. Not that an Iron grade cloak wouldn't add to that  :)

Just to explain my reasons for the complicated lamellar leather:

You butcher an animal. You get meat, fat, skin, hair, horn/hoof, bone. You eat the meat. You tan the skin to leather. You work the fat into tallow, work the tallow into oil, boil leather in oil. You take the horn, hoof or bone, stud the boiled leather with it. You take the hair, spin it into thread, take studded leatherpieces and string them together.

Voila, Lamellar leather. All from one single animal, using up its entire raw resources from butchering. Except the meat of course.

So you can make a shitty piece of leather (or three pieces of even worse suede) or you invest work-time to refine it all the way up. But whenever you get leather from butchering something you should have enough resources to refine it all the way up.
