Not sure how possible this is, but instead of mining down, elves grow multi level trees upward and outward which become the basis for their "fortress"

Not possible, there are no multi level trees at the moment.

If it becomes possible in DF2013, only Toady the Great knows...

you always could "grow" your tree fort blasphemies by importing logs and building it. Beyond that wait for Toady

With DFHack !!SCIENCE!!, anything is possible!

Also, the sylvan elves could be responsible for buffing wildlife (as in, making them into living WMDs) using a workshop.

It's worth pointing out that since everyone can butcher sentients now, they should probably get something extra for that, considering how much of a hat it is for the elves.

Regarding the wood problem, what about a inmobile "living tree" pet, that gives wood logs as eggs?
i could get around to finishing my Siren tree, it could be a trainable one as well.
think a smaller poisonous trent.

edit* maybe a reaction that uses dfhack to "purify" the local map,so a player could embark on a haunted map and turn it mirthful over time?

Regarding some of the things discussed:

Animal training, yes, definitely.  I am thinking an array of animals, some mystical, some mundane, with reactions either to create/summon them using the new summoning system (i.e. totem + horn + meat + bones = reaction to transform a wisp into a living unicorn) or to improve them (spider + reagent = poisonous spider)

if you have specific animals you like to see, or specific improving reactions, that would be awesome, but I am thinking a mixture of war pets, hunting pets, and ranching pets with a wide variety of product.  Some are already mentioned in my 2nd post.

Trees, I was thinking of trying a "treant sapling" that you could controllable grow into (1)  very slow sentinel treant, (2) a somewhat weaker and faster huron or mobile treant, and (3) a docile living tree that you can shear bark from periodically.  Maybe a variety of attack flowers like spitting orchids, spellcasting poppies, and poisonous webbing vines. 

The shearable tree probably won't totally replace the farmable saplings which can be shaped into wood at the Treesinger's pagoda, well, unless it works out really awesomely :)

Leather blocks, i dunno if that works.  I'll try it.

You mention spellcasting poppies, I think the fields of Sleep Poppies from the Wizard of Oz books. And that would be AWESOME.

Thanks for the idea!  Is "purify" a DFHack that exists or just brainstorming?  (i have no capability of writing such a thing or even of evaluating whether it is possible)
