Ray Harryhausen died, what's your best memory?
« on: May 08, 2013, 09:47:58 am »

Yahoo news.  Sorry.

Toady always cites Ray Harryhausen movies as having had an influence on DF, and I'm sure many people here have seen his movies.

I remember two scenes from childhood... the skeleton fight and some multi-armed thing... from Sinbad??  Golden Axe sated my need for skeleton fighting then, but now I want to know, where are the skeletons in DF?

It's the skeletons from Argonauts that I think of first too, and the 80's version of Clash of the Titans.

Already a testament to his art that we thought of Sinbad or Argonauts (already, what, 20 years old at the time?) when playing Golden Axe :)

I remember the skeleton fight, too, from Argonauts.  I remember seeing it on TV when I was 4 or 5 and spending years trying to find it again.

Probably one of the things, in my early development, that steered me away from paleontology and towards archaeology.

The showdown against Talos is pretty memorable as well, and even the short bits, like the "Charon, Ferryman of Hades" scene in Clash of the Titans. Hell, there are lots of scenes of those movies that you can watch again today and they haven't lost a single bit of their appeal.

Here's Kali dancing for the first time, as it appeared on The Golden Voyage of Sinbad.

Oh my, the dancing snake lady from The 7th Voyage of Sinbad has aged a bit, but sure is entertaining.

And surely, there are still more. This might be a pleasing topic, the legacy of these creatures reaches far and away.

Really sad to have learned this today.

I think the most vivid memory of my youth from one of those wonderfull movies he contributed too stay his fantastic cyclopean creature from one of the Sinbad movies and his skeletons army battle from Jason and the Argonauts.

So brillant at the time, and giving a look on some of my pastimes and modelling work, it's easy to see that Harryhausen had an influence on my tastes.

I pray for his rest to be peacefull.

The skeletons in Jason and the Argonauts.
The impression that movie made on me was deep and has colored much of my life.

I haven't checked since I'm not doing bugs until after the release (well, I'm doing bugs, in the additive sense).

The skeletons from Jason and the Argonauts are timeless. There's something about the irregular, imperfect nature of the stop motion animation that makes them far creepier than any modern motion captured cgi attempts.
