Worst feeling?  maybe when your super-legendary, artifact wearing, adamantine-clad (studded with images of artifacts and his own ascension to militia commander) militia commander goes forth to battle, and the first arrow he dodges makes him fall into a 2 z-level pit and he lands directly on his head and dies instantly.

...or when she decides to rush out through the carefully webbed weapon traps...ouch.

Watching a tamable (or untamable but usable-if-captured, a la web-spraying FBs) building destroyer take your bait.

When elves arrive on the map, you check the unit list, and you see they brought the other half of your [SHELL] breeding pair.

Your moody Weaponsmith produces a platinum war hammer, or an adamantine battle axe/short sword/spear.

Reading the combat logs of a skilled melee-dwarf who makes a habit of biting off her opponents' fingers after she's incapacitated them, or some equally idiosyncratic combat quirk.

Hello!

For me, the best feelings come from the dwarves surprising me:

- When I discover a new historic event in the art or maybe even a historic event type I have never seen before (like art showing only a "confrontation", or art mentioning foundations of other civ settlements)
- When relationships between dwarves change (both lovers and grudges are interesting, fascinating and inspiring for me)
- When dwarves die of old age in the midst of their family

Of course, there are many more occasions where I get a very good feeling. For instance, in my current fortress, the hospital is planned to be a nifty little tower, so its completion will feel good (mind you, all my designs are small-scale as I use pop cap 7).

Yours,

My engravings are mostly split between my fort's history, a war with the elves, and the reign of terror from a roc known as Beardedmassive.  In some hall sections, it seems that every other engraving is Beardedmassive ripping apart some poor soul.  I wonder if it's still alive out there...

Share your Stonesense view of your Tower of Healing when it's done :)!

I have a bit of a food fixation, so for me the best feeling is realizing the larder is overfilled and I have to send the miners to dig/designate a new one and the cooks to compress the food into stacks of lavish meals.

When a hidden necromancer gets into your boneyard and you get attacked by hands hair and bones.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And you only have a few guys to fight them off...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I only lost a few guys there, and that was due to exhaustion and dehydration from the amount of time spent fighting various body parts that were apparently more threatening than lack of water.

My best feelings come from learning more about the mechanics and the interface. Like when I got my first batch of Giant Raven Hatchlings.

My best feeling came from when I switched the Masterwork font with Chicago Laser, which is hellabad and makes it look like it's playing on a Mac.

I also love it when I get a really interesting idea for a design layout.

Best feeling is when the dwarves don't fuck everything up. You know, when they actually manage to do something succesfully without dying in the process. For example, when healthcare and equiping works.

When the entire force of siegeing goblins decides to run into my ballista battery, then a perfectly timed bolt rips apart the whole army, making everyone else retreat while my marksdwarves rain a hail of iron bolts into them.

Also, when I don't accidentally flood the fort in making a well.

I play a unique world where my dwarven civilization is extinct, and still in war with elves.
So, each time I build a new fortress, there are many migrants who comes from my former fortresses.

I love the feeling when badass soldiers with long past and training suddenly arrives in the middle of a siege and then I can lower the drawbridge and charge from both sides !

I love the feeling of an epic story.

I have had a hero who charged alone (and against my orders) 7 or 8 goblins and jumped all the arrows and bolts and cut their throat with her epic steel artifact sword, and was finally saved by the other military after being badly injuried...and after weeks of bed, was eventually killed by the chief medical dwarf while still in traction benches, because he has thrown a tantrum and crushed her skull. It's even more epic when you know that the tantrum was due to the fact that the medical dwarf lost his wife...who was soldier...and was killed during the epic assault to help my heroic soldier !

Steelwoman, the imperial automn of sockets, if you read me, know that you will never be forgotten !

There are around four types of "best feelings" for me:

a) Complex and sometimes risky fluid related experimentation going right. (I'm not an expert on the fluids system, so "complex" may be "easy" for a veteran player). On the flip side, them going wrong and drowning/melting my whole fortress is one of the worse feelings for me.

b) An intimidating looking siege (bonus points if they killed an unlucky migrant wave you wanted on your fortress) being defeated by a coordinated dwarfy defense(once in a lifetime event): marksdwarves weakening the front lines of enemy squads, melee dwarves engaging more or less at the same time, marksdwarves cleaning up fleeing enemy survivors.
I love reading the death combat reports of that globin that killed the most promising migrants.

c) Having a dwarf you are attached to survive a dangerous experience that by accident or by force you had to put in. (Almost melting or trapping my best miner. Sending your most awesome military dwarf on a suicidal combat order. That kind of thing)

d) To know that you are playing a game that can produce this type of content (basically, any type of DF inspired, fan created content):
http://www.dfst.org/en/stories/328
http://www.dfst.org/en/stories/353
http://www.dfst.org/en/stories/280
http://www.dfst.org/en/stories/311

(I love that website by the way :D )

Bypassing the aquifer the first time in your selected base entrance location.  Especially after a 7 z-level monster-fer in your last site.

Seconded. I'd like to add "After which you utilise the aquifer as the core of your defence system, just because."

Seal off your fortress and make it impregnable, then use screw pumps to flood every inch of that town in magma. Either that or dig too deep and watch as the circus comes to town. Everything will burn. Everything must burn.
