quote/My engravings are mostly split between my fort's history, a war with the elves, and the reign of terror from a roc known as Beardedmassive.  In some hall sections, it seems that every other engraving is Beardedmassive ripping apart some poor soul.  I wonder if it's still alive out there...
\end quote

Sounds like the roc is half dwarf

Yes, sadly.  She died over a century before the founding of my fort.

Quote from: Legends Mode
Avum Beardedmassive the Morning of Jewels was a female bird roc born in -259 and died in 102 (Struck) by the dwarf Meng Portalpaddled, in a duel.
Associated Spheres: sky, wind and hunting

The best feelings in DF
When you hit [esc] and stare at the 'save game' option. Your favourite Dwarves have died, your projects lie in bleak and burned ruins with a handful of survivors trying to hold the Fort.
You know how easy it is to just end the game and start at the previous save, a time where you would be able to not make the same mistake that led you to this point.
You press save, and the certainty of those fallen is sealed.
Whether those scant survivors succeed or not, losing remains Fun.

The ability to have such attachment and the willingness to see it all go is something I find rather unique to Dwarf Fortress.

When a legendary hammerdwarf goes into battle without her hammer, but proceeds to use her artifact bone shield to shatter and fracture enemy bones with every single hit :D.

You know that you could get a clean start - correct you mistakes - but then you remember what Dwarf Fotress is about.

You resume to the game and try to save what could be saved. You order your survivors into the bunker, you wait sieges and monsters go out. Or die with honor. And sometimes, after hundreds of years, the future dwarves will tell the tale of epic and glory about your fort.

When you finally get a complex industry chain working and churning out goods, and you see for example your soap stockpile being filled, or commission the first batch of steel armour.

It's faster to write "!!science!!" than any of the synonyms: "mad science", "dwarvern science", or "crimes against the laws of god and man".
