In the Third Age of Middle Earth, a band of Hobbits, an Elf, a Dwarf, two Humans, and a Wizard open the entrance to an ancient mine, carved out from the mountain by an ancient empire of dwarves. They believe it mostly abandoned, inhabited by only a crawling rabble of mutant orcs with little organization and fewer brains; they find, however, that the ancient place is much different than they expected.

You are the change, the difference in history that will rewrite it. For after all, the story of the fellowship was balanced on the edge of a knife; it only would take so much to tip that balance.
You review your rise to power carefully, bit by bit. You are a goblin, yes; a creature with greened skin, jagged teeth, slitted eyes. Yet unlike your kin, you were different. You saw beyond the darkness and filth; you examined the ruins of a bygone race, and found legends of ancient heroes, mighty gods, and fell beasts. You read of how many metals, dismissed as unworkable by your kin, can be heated to form mighty blades and dense hammers. Most importantly, you learned of the concept of civilization, of creatures working together to build something greater than themselves.
This had become your dream, to unite the goblin. That was always your goal, first and foremost.
It all began when you were born...
...On-top of one of the great central pillars of Moria. There are many of your kind here and there is much information on the past etched into the pillars, but food is scarce and most relics have been destroyed by other goblins out of spite.
...In the former forges. These areas are less dense in population, and food is somewhat hard to come by; however, there are many artifacts of the dwarven race about, including legendary weapons and armor hidden away by miners trying to save their lives work. There are runes engraved in the walls, poems of the forge; some may speak of the ancient techniques used.
...Inside the former city. Here information on the past is abundant, with histories of the dwarven kind and artifacts of their daily lives. However, other goblins are hard to find here, and although there is a fair amount of food stored in the dwarven stocks, when it runs out there will be nothing left to sustain a population of any size.
...Deep in the great mines. Food is plentiful, with the wildlife of the deep scurrying about everywhere. However, there is not another goblin soul to be seen but the most wretched of outcasts. The walls are clean of runes, but huge veins of valuable and solid ores fill the walls, ignored by the dwarves in the hunger for Mithril. Some of the legendary metal may be found here, and if the legends are true, an ancient weapon of the Dwarven Kings, a ring of metal filled with an uncanny power. If the same legend is to be believed, however, an ancient beast of lightless flame might live here as well.
You would think that your birthplace would be very influential in what was to come.
