Better Dorfs 2 - Continuing the awesome!

Better Dorfs is a collection of Rubble addons for everything from a new civ to overhauls of vanilla industries.

==============================================
Overview:
==============================================

Better Dorfs adds a bunch of industries as well as a new playable race, the saurians.
Everything can be toggled on or off via disabling/enabling its addon prior to generating the raws.

The objective of Better Dorfs is to gather every single feature I liked from every mod I every played into one giant collection of semi-independent Rubble addons.
I am still a long way from reaching my goal, but with every version I get closer ;)

Every BD2 addon is guaranteed to work with every other BD2 addon (unless the addon description says otherwise). Some addons will modify their behavior when other addons are loaded, all such cases are mentioned in the addon descriptions.

Better Dorfs supports the following tilesets:
ASCII (default, use default Rubble addon "Tileset/Vanilla" to revert tileset init changes)
   SpaceFox (via BD addon "Tilesets/SpaceFox")
Phoebus (untested, via BD addon "Tilesets/Phoebus")
Obsidian (untested, via BD addon "Tilesets/Obsidian")
The default Rubble addon "Tileset/MLC" is fully BD compatible as well (it uses the default ASCII mappings).

==============================================
Install:
==============================================

Install Dwarf Fortress
Optionally install DFHack r3 or later (DFHack is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)
Install Rubble: (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=128013.0)
Make sure you follow the instructions for editing your dfhack.init file if you want the DFHack stuff to work!
Drop the Better Dorfs zip file into the Rubble addons directory (WITHOUT extracting it!)

If you are on Windows and want to use the GUI:
Just launch "Rubble GUI.exe", nothing special needs to be done.

If can not/do not want to use the GUI:
Run "rubble -addonlist" (this will update addonlist.ini)
Edit <addonsdir>/addonlist.ini to enable the addons you want. To enable an addon change it's value to "true"

Better Dorfs requires the following default Rubble addons:
   Base/Clear
   Base/Templates

All BD2 addons require the "Better Dorfs 2.x/Base" addon to be active.

Better Dorfs is incompatible with the following default Rubble addons:
   Base/Files
   Fix/Usable Chitin
   Fix/Usable Scale
   Fix/Undead Melt
   Fix/Vermin Variations
   Generic Animal Mats

See the Rubble readme for more info.

==============================================
Addons Overview:
==============================================

The addon names as given here are not complete, for example "Block/Bone" is really "Better Dorfs x.y/Block/Bone" (where x.y is the BD version number.)

All addons that require DFHack will have "DFHack" somewhere in the addon name. All DFHack powered addons that need non-default DFHack scripts will install the needed scripts automatically. Such scripts are renamed so that if you already have that script (under it's default name) BD won't overwrite it (just in case you have a custom/newer version or something).

Any addon with "Cheat" in it's name requires the base Rubble addon "Dev/Cheat". Such addons are for testing and are not listed here. Cheat addons may cause issues with worldgen material availability, please do not report bugs found while using a cheat addon until you confirm them without said addon.

Credits:
==============================================

Thanks to the makers of:
   Masterwork
   Kobold Camp
   Dwarven Lamination
   Expanded Glazes
   Broken Arrow
   Modest Mod
   More Leather Mod
   Essential DF
   Animated Weapons

These mods provided many ideas that I then reworked into the Better Dorfs you have today.

Special thanks to the DFHack team, as many things in BD would be impossible (or very difficult) without DFHack.

==============================================
BUGS (and other issues):
==============================================

The "Farming/Basics" addon allows you to make drinkable juices (as an alternative for alcohol), but there is no way to stockpile such drinks. The only way to fix this would be to make the juices alcohol which is something I would really rather not do (as then juice would satisfy dwarven alcohol needs).
If you want to avoid this issue refrain from using the "fill barrel with juice" reaction (as it is this reaction that makes the juice drinkable).
Unfortunately there is no way to stockpile water at all (AFAIK).

The "Farming/Basics" "drunk" syndrome does not appear to work correctly (if at all).

==============================================
Change Log:
==============================================
v2.11
   Updated to Rubble 3.12
For the updated "Libs/DFHack/Fluids" addon and the new prep "addon".
Added prep support for all addons that needed it.
"DFHack/Magma/Melter" can now spawn magma directly into a cistern.
"DFHack/Magma/Melter" and "DFHack/Magma/Extractor" are now directly Lua powered,
they should be more flexible and not as buggy (no more autoSyndrome "issues").
All the various "fluids" DFHack addons now give experience to the worker.
(I hope I got the exp amount right)
Hopefully fixed the issue with "More Armor", you may still be missing (other) armor pieces though.
Sorry, it's a vanilla issue, maybe I can DFHack my way around it but not right now.
Hopefully fixed the "infinitely burning web turret silk" problem, it now boils at a much lower temperature.
Fixed "Fix/Undead Melt" so the sawmill (and a few others) work with it again.

v2.10
   Updated to Rubble 3.11
Mostly for the update to the "Libs/Crates" addon and the wondrous "Libs/DFHack/Fluids" addon.
Fixed "Crates/Cheat" (several minor errors that stopped it from working).
Changed the way metal bar crates are handled, entities should no longer have access to metals they shouldn't.
Removed sawmill scrap, everything just uses planks now.
A side effect of this is that making ash/charcoal is a little less OP now.
The "Lamination" addon is back to using the alchemy skill.
Removed the "Dwarf" addon, this functionality is now built into the base.
Added block/plank reactions to the "Factory" addon
Both of the "Magma" addons are now DFHack powered for greater flexibility/usability.
How these addons are used has changed greatly, please read the addon descriptions before using.
The "Metallurgy/DFHack/Volcanic" addon now uses magma directly, no more cart filling needed!
Added "DFHack/Cart Filler", fill minecarts with water or magma.
Added "DFHack/Obsidian Caster", create obsidian boulders directly from water and magma.
Removed "DFHack/Animated Weapons" as part of the push to move all (direct) ports of other peoples mods to separate addons.
Updated the base to match EDF r9.

v2.9
   Updated to Rubble 3.10
Made the Rubble version check give more info if the version is not an exact match (but is compatible).
Added "Edible Vermin", cheap emergency food source.
The "Factory/DFHack/Mines" and "Factory/DFHack/Turrets" addons may now be used without the "Factory" addon.
In this case mines and turrets are only available for import (via the "Crates" addon).
The "Shops" addon should actually work now (when will I ever learn, test THEN release)
Changed all caste related addons to use the new Rubble library addons.
Added "Saurian/Basic Castes/DFHack/Transform", change saurian castes.
Added "More Armor", make full suits of armor from shell and bone.
Merged "Armored Gloves" into "More Armor".
Removed a few more uses of MAT from buildings, it's just less hassle to use static colors.
The "Glass Forge" addon now produces the correct number of boots and gauntlets.
The "Saurian" addon now required the "Glass Forge" addon.
The "Saurian/Warcrafter" addon has been merged with the "Saurian" addon.
   Removed the "Saurian/Metal Value" addon.
Removed the "Orcs" addon, use the Fortress Defense addon pack instead (separate download).
Added reactions to make "shell" items to the "Saurian" addon.
   Merged "Factory/Fix" into "Factory".

v2.8
Stopped dwarves/saurians from "cleaning" some kinds of plant pastes out of existence, oops.
Added reaction to "Farming/Basics" that allows you to press paste and discard the liquid.
Good for processing puff balls if you don't want to mess with extracts.
Replaced some occurrences of MAT in buildings with static colors as it only appears to work sometimes.
MAT is right up at the top of my "frustrating features" list, just when you think you have it working it fails.
Fixed rotated impassible tile map for merchant stall, stupid Workshop Draw.
The "Shops" addon now uses the correct crate class.
Added various uses to the "glass" materials in the "Glass Forge" addon, now glass bars should be more useful.
Fixed bad material name in "Hives/Rainbow Beetle" and "Hives/Workshop"
Plants in "Farming/Basics" now use different materials for paste and press cake.
This means that press cake and paste may have different properties, for example puff ball paste is poisonous,
but you can eat the press cake.

v2.7
   Updated to Rubble 3.9.
This is to make use of the moved (and updated) "Libs/Crates"
   Moved "Libs/Crates" to Rubble.
Fixed a bunch of places where panic was still used for error handling.
Finished the "Faming" addon, renamed to "Farming/Basics".
Added 2 more saurian castes, the farmer and the crafter.
   Renamed "Harder Farming" to "Farming/Harder".
Added "Farming/Dye", dye plants to go with "Farming/Basics".
Added saurians to the "Farming/Basics" drunk list.
Fixed issue with animated weapon crates not being available.
Added crated turrets (basic level only) to the dwarves if "Crates" and "Factory/DFHack/Turrets" are active.
Added crated mines to the dwarves if "Crates" and "Factory/DFHack/Mines" are active.
Fixed the "Crates" and "Saurian" addons to work properly with "Farming/Basics" and "Farming/Dye".
Added "Shops", buy stuff for coins (values may be a little off).
Added "Research", study stuff to unlock buildings.
Extended the "Libs/Coins" addon a little.
The "Saurian/Warcrafter" can now make green glass weapons if the "Glass Forge" addon is active.
This is so that saurian itemless embarks are possible with the "Research" addon.
If the "Glass Forge" addon is active saurians will no longer get iron in world gen,
instead they will get green and clear glass.
Turret webs will now boil away when ignited
Pairing a web turret with a fire turret will no longer give you a field of ever burning webs.
Unplayable saurians should no longer get ADDON_HOOK_PLAYABLE.
This should fix them trading stuff they shouldn't in dwarf worlds.

v2.6
   Updated to Rubble 3.8.
Better error messages, more version info exposed to scripts, and a new template.
Replaced my (rather shortsighted) Rubble version check with a much better one.
Saurians now use the same basic system as dwarves for castes.
Added "Saurian/Basic Castes", this adds all the castes that used to be hardcoded into the saurian creature.
Addon "DFHack/Claim Site" no longer needs manual changes to DFHack.init
(provided you carry out the optional install step listed in the Rubble readme)
Added "Farming", advanced farmable plants, most of which require more processing than vanilla ones.
Not nearly finished yet, think of this as a preview :)

v2.5
   Updated to Rubble 3.7.
This is mostly to use the new @IF_ACTIVE template.
Putting glaze powder in bags was preventing it from being stockpiled properly, glaze powder is now stored in jugs.
Glaze powder ordered from caravans and at embark is still stored in bags,
added an automatic reaction to the "Pottery/Glaze" addon to empty a glaze powder bag into a jug.
Fixed a misnamed Raptor command, there should be no user visible change.
Split glaze powder production to a new addon, "Pottery/Glaze".
The "Pottery" addon only allows production of ash glaze now.
Prepended the names of all arena creatures with "arena", so kill list will be correct.
(instead of "1 dragon in yourfort" it will be "1 arena dragon in yourfort")
   Removed the old hive addons.
   Added "Hives/Spider" and "Hives/Rainbow Beetle".
   Added "Hives/Workshop", experimental workshop hives.
Fixed "Factory/DFHack/Mines" so the mines die properly (most of the time).
Added "Glass Forge", make glass armor and weapons.
Removed glass weapons from the "Saurian/Warcrafter".
Treated bone blocks are now actually fire safe.
Added dye color reaction classes to the "Base" addon.
BD now does a Rubble version check.

v2.4
   Updated to Rubble 3.6.
This required small changes to around half of the tweak scripts.
You cannot generate a world in which both dwarves and saurians are playable anymore.
This is due to a bug with outpost liaisons and trade reps, the players race would send both (even if it is only one position).
Added "Saurian/Unplayable", an addon to allow saurians as an unplayable race in dwarf worlds.
Added "Ore Processor", an addon to add some complexity to smelting.
Split-up and templated "Dwarf/Castes", The templates are in the new "Dwarf" addon.
Added "Dwarf/Guilds", more advanced dwarf caste addon.
The "Lamination" addon now interacts with the "Sawmill" addon to a greater degree.
You can make cheap logs from sawmill scrap now.
You can now scrap unwanted wooden items at the sawmill.
Added "Factory/DFHack/Mines", one shot death machines coming to a factory near you!
   Split-up the "Metallurgy" addon.
Now has two parts "Metallurgy", which just has the building and "Metallurgy/Vanilla", which has the alloys.
Added "Metallurgy/Mithril", adds a new high performance weapons grade alloy.
Added "Metallurgy/Volcanic", adds a new high performance weapons grade alloy.
Changed "Harder Farming", aboveground crops can be grown all year round again.
This means that the aboveground shrubs will survive the winter,
so emergency gather plants expeditions should be possible in the winter :p
   Added "Hives/Bane Spider", "Hives/Cochineal", and "Hives/Silk Worm".
New hiveable creatures, based on ones from Masterwork.
Redrew the magma extractor building, it should look and function better.
Added "Decorations/Carpet", decorative workshops to pretty up your halls.
Added a bunch of reactions to the "Pottery" addon that allow mixing glazes at the kiln.
Not very useful yet, as there is no way to get many of the base colors (aside from trading).
Reduced some of the metal chances for the magma extractor as it was too easy to get lots of metals.
The total chance (to get any bar) is now around 38%
Added "Block/Boulder", complete color control coming to a fortress near you!
All Block addons now have changed temp values for materials.
Normal stone is not magma safe, fine stone is magma safe.
Added "Ore" addon, replaces clusters with veins and fixes some name "issues".
Added "Wicker/DFHack/Scarecrow", spawn immobile scarecrow creatures to help spot ambushes and thieves.
Added "Fix/Undead Melt", a BD compatible version of the base Rubble addon of the same name.
Changed the training addon a little, nothing that effects the player.
Basically I found a "bug" that was actually making things work BETTER, so I made that the new correct way :p
The magma extractor and melter are now furnaces.
Removed the flux reaction from the saurian warcrafter and moved it to it's own addon.
You can now poison artifact weapons with "DFHack/Spatter"!

v2.3
   Updated to Rubble 3.5.
The only changes that effect BD are the moved addons.
Added possible reaction to "Magma/Melter" that will allow you to unlock magma workshops/furnaces.
The reaction is only added if you have the default Rubble addon "Libs/DFHack/Command" activated.
Added "Factory/DFHack/Turret", allows you to manufacture turrets at the factory.
Reverted many (but not all) of the changes to building colors,.
For some reason some buildings have graphical glitches when MAT is used where others work fine, weird.
Saurians now come in the spring.
This is needed to keep them from colliding with the human caravan, scuttled wagons are not cool.
Moved "Libs/DFHack/Command" and "Libs/DFHack/Spawn" to Rubble.
These addons are too generally useful to keep as part of BD.
   Removed "Libs/DFHack/Morph".
As-is this addon is useless, maybe later.
Updated the "Base" addon to match the latest (r6) Essential DF (plus some bug fixes)
This update fixes trade reps! now you can order stuff from ALL caravans :)
      Included custom bug fixes:
Female raccoons should now have a name and description.
Trade reps are really, truly FIXED! (r6 was supposed to do this, but failed)
Dwarves have the trade rep fixes applied (for when you play saurians)
Crate unpack reactions are now automatic.

v2.2
   Updated to Rubble 3.4.
BD now enforces dependencies/incompatibilities wherever possible.
It should no longer be possible to generate "broken" worlds by accidentally activating known-incompatible addons.
Changed magma melter so that it is usable without iron.
You can now fill iron, steel, green glass, and nether-cap minecarts and the building no-longer
requires iron parts (just magma safe blocks).
Doubled chance to get metals at the magma extractor.
Minor cosmetic changes to some of the raws.
   Added "Adv Reactions" addon.
Adv Reactions has a few simple adventure mode reactions that should make it much easier to get the
tools you need to use the gui/advfort DFHack script.
   Added "DFHack/Claim Site" addon.
You NEED to add "dfhack_claim_site" to your "dfhack.init" file for this to be useful!
Crates should all have correct values now.
Saurians now bring more crate types if the "Crates" addon is active.
Added plant crates, values may be off a little.
Added metal bar crates for all common metals.
Added a few more wood crates.
Added crate support to the "DFHack/Animated Weapons" addon.
Added a crate testing/cheat addon (requires "Dev/Cheat" base Rubble addon).
Added a bunch of stuff to the "Factory" addon.
You no longer get the gauntlets for "free" when using "Factory/Fix".
   Added "Libs/DFHack/Command" addon.
The "Libs/DFHack/Spawn" addon now requires "Libs/DFHack/Command"
Made all the buildings (that didn't already) use MAT for some of their color info.
   Added "Metallurgy" addon.
Fixed many small bugs and formatting problems.

v2.1
   Updated to Rubble 3.3.
Added CAN_STONE to most of the saurian weapons.
Added a reaction to the "Saurian/Warcrafter" addon to allow making maces from any hard stone and one wood.
Added experimental support for Phoebus, Obsidian and SpaceFox tilesets.
NOT TESTED (aside from a simple error log and generation checks).
Split the saurian diplomat into two positions, one for "diplomat" functions and one as a trade rep.
Fixed the dwarf warrior caste, I messed up and gave them a bonus for some of the wrong skills (and forgot others).
   Added the "DFHack/Animated Weapons" addon.
Fixed some bugs in Essential DF.
Changed values of the different coal types to something sensible.
Lignite: 3 (same as flux) From: undefined
         Bituminous Coal: 6 From: undefined
         Anthracite: 9 From: 10
Fixed incorrect name of anthracite to coke reaction.
Fixed trade reps and diplomats (I hope).
Elves should work, but humans (and goblins, if your entity is friendly with them) will only work if non-player nobles can be ELECTED.
I also added MERCHANT_NOBILITY to all entities that have trade reps, just in case.

v2.0
BD now uses the Rubble port of Essential DF as it's base.
I am restarting the changelog, as so many things have changed in this version that it is not worth trying to catalog all of them.

Updated to 1.6.

The main change for this version is the fact that everything was split into many little Rubble addons.

Update to 1.7

Note that installation procedures have changed. No real changes as far as functionality goes, but it is well worth the upgrade to Rubble 3.0.

Ah, but see via the awsomeness of Rubble you don't have to install the stuff you don't want :)

Glad you like it, but the new version is even better ;)

The addon Libs/Crates doesn't do anything yet (it's fully functional, but it is just a library) and the addon DFHack/Arena only lets you spawn lions, but aside from those two everything should work.

EDIT: Oh, the new version of BD also requires the new version of Rubble, 3.1 to be exact.

Re: Better Dorfs & Saurians v1.9 Now with a working arena!
« Reply #7 on: November 14, 2013, 10:50:11 am »

1.9 uploaded!
The main reason I am uploading this so soon is that I messed up the dependency check for the DFHack/Arena addon, if you tried to activate that addon it would always tell you that it was missing a required addon and abort generation, oops.

Aside from fixing that I also added two minor addons ("Diggable Slade" and "Add Diplomats") as well as adding a bunch of creatures to the (fixed) arena.
Very little testing was do to anything aside from the new arena creatures, but not much was added, so it should be no big deal.

2.0 is up!

2.0 switches from using the default Rubble base addon to using Essential DF. If you dislike Essential DF, sorry I guess you can keep using 1.9...

I do have a 1.10 that was almost ready, I may upload that later as "BD Classic" or something.

Tileset support is "done" in the next version (comming soon!) but all I did is copy the SpaceFox addon from EDF as all the buildings looked ok without changes (and all the other stuff is from EDF)

Support for some of the other tilesets may be comming as well but some of those may require modding the BD buildings (a relativly large job)

Glad you like saurians! If you have any suggestions feel free :)

2.1 is up!

I included tileset addons for SpaceFox (tested, sort-of) Obsidian, and Phoebus (not tested at all).

2.1 is mostly just minor bugfixes and a few small new addons (namely Animated Weapons)
