I'd think, based on their purple color and the fact that they make wine, that they's resemble plums (fits the name as well).

What do you think?

I think they taste like sweetened cardboard, with an earthy umami aftertaste.  They're a staple crop, boring but dependable.  They're mushrooms.  They've got to have sugar or something that breaks down into sugar in 'em, else they wouldn't be worth much for making alcohol.

I suppose they could also be potato-like with a confusing quasi-meat flavor.

They're enormous, very fleshy mushrooms.  I imagine they taste much like real world mushrooms, with some amount of mild sweetness.

I'd say they have a fleshy texture, with a light sweetness, not sugary so much as like...maybe a sweetness level of honey bread?  Subtle but noticeable for the aforementioned reason.  The primary flavor being a slightly bland earthy taste, none of the flavors involved particularly strong.  They're a hardy stable crop, meant to be a part of the every day diet of Dwarves, but palpable on a solo dish as well as a mixed plate.

"Ah, I see." The fungus was disconcertingly squishy. "Erm, how do they taste?"

The Tradesman grinned nervously at the dwarf, but the face behind the beard was, as always, severe. "Oookaaayy... How about the wine? Plump Helmet Wine. Is it good?"

"There's no such thing. Only Dwarven Wine. It has alcohol. Have we a deal?"

"Well... OK. I'll take a barrel." Perhaps he could unload it down at The Abbey of Lusts (At the start of every day, consider ravishing). "What were you considering in exchange? I've got a nice Bronze Flute here, covered in eel bones and a lovely design done in seagull leather..."

For some reason, I imagine them tasting like this very specific brand of prefabricated fungi-stuffed tortellini I forget the name of. I can also imagine them tasting like the whites of boiled eggs, but more porous.
