I want to change the names of my dwarves, and I don't mean just the nicknames but the actual first and lastnames. So far I haven't found a way to do this.

So my question : Is this actually possible?

I am pretty sure that you can only give them nicknames. DF hack or some other tool may be able to do it. Dwarfs also get custom titles at times.

DFHack can change family names, no problem. But it's extremely dicey to change dwarves' first names for some reason. I think it has to do with the names being replicated across Legends mode, world history, all that jazz. I wrote a script once that would change their first name and last name, but those changes didn't show up anywhere except on the main unit screen. And the game behaved... oddly... after that. Don't know how to explain it.

Short answer: Not yet. I know that it's possible with DFHack, but it's far more complicated than it sounds, even if you're familiar with the DFHack API and Lua scripting.

The game has settings for what names get replaced by nicknames, if any. You can set it to replace the whole name and then name them whatever you like - that gets you close.

You can use these to say how nicknames are displayed in each mode
Options are REPLACE_FIRST, CENTRALIZE (between first and last), REPLACE_ALL

[NICKNAME_LEGENDS:REPLACE_FIRST]
