How do I increase the number of Dwarves at embark?
« on: June 02, 2013, 07:25:00 am »

There are times when it seems seven Dwarves just isn't enough to start out with.  Is there a way to increase the number of Dwarves that I start with?

Nnnnnnnnope. You get the Seven Dwarves. You CAN embark with 88 war dogs, but that's it.

You sure?  Those seven Dwarves got programmed in there some how or another, so surely there's a way to add more?

There used to be utilities that allowed editing the number of starting dwarves. I don't know if any are currently available, but I think there's something in dfhack to do this.

Try DFHack and this tiny script.  (Thank you, Warmist.)

Edit: Warmist says that the author of this script is jjyg aka jj``

Nice. Within the scripting though, where the numeral 7 is located, would we need to change that to like, 8, or 12, etc to achieve the desired effect?

Also, is there a way to alter the starting resource points to make up for the extra points needed to allocate skills for the new dwarves?

You can set it for any custom world you generate. It's right in there, amongst the other parameters.

Another option would be to create a dwarf caste with the [PET] tag.  This let's you bring more the way you would war dogs, and they still behave like dwarves (except others can adopt them, I believe).

Ah, thank you. I'll have to try that out when I get home from work

Edit: worked like a charm. No more wasting valuable trades on sand bags and leather and such. Thank you for pointing this out. I'm still very new to what all can be edited and played around with.

I haven't used this script, but it looks like you run it as
Code: [Select]
startdwarf 12from the dfhack console window.

Note that it does not give feedback if it succeeds.

you can also use cheat engine as dwarf fortress uses real numerals
