(OOC Thread - discuss things, sign up, or just chat with the players here!)

It is 535 years since the founding of the Kernician Empire, and the fifth day of the fifth month. For the past year or so, relative peace has reigned over the continent - no major wars or border skirmishes have broken out, although there has been a sharp rise in crime that has led to the formation of many mercenary groups looking to get rich quick from killing bandits, taking their loot, and getting paid for it. Our story centers around one particular mercenary unit, the Dog Soldiers (led by the Austrysian loremaster Foster) and begins just after noon, in a low-rent tavern known as the Murky Goblet, in a small village named Merrowcliff. The beer is not the best but it is cheap, and the people here mind their own business.

Foster slammed the empty mug down on the bar to get the bartender's attention.

"Bartender! Another round for myself and my friends here!"

Once it was refilled, he raised the mug.

"Here's to another job well done, boys and girls. Good work Adelaide, Elian. I knew when I hired the pair of you, you wouldn't let me down."

The loremaster turned his attention to the prospects sitting with them. One way or another, they had heard of Foster's Dog Soldiers and were looking to join. He'd asked them to meet himself and two of his own so he could get their opinions on these three people.

"Well, anyway. Even if you guys don't make it in, you're getting free drinks out of it. You can't really lose in this situation. So, tell me a bit about yourselves. Nathara, Tyrone, and... Ralai?"

Foster tilted his head to the side. He just could not make out if he should be hitting on this last person or not. Nathara was obviously a woman, but she looked like a hard case that wouldn't appreciate casual meaningless flirting, and he wasn't into guys - even if they were as exotic and unusual as this Tyrone person looked. But the blond... hell, he was clueless.

"For example, where are you from, why do you want to join, and what would you bring to the table?"

Adelaide Sai, Elian Arelet, Nathara Meless, Tyrone Skyveers, and Ralai are in!

"Here's to another job well done, ~~~ girl! Good work Adelaide ~~~~. I knew when I hired ~~~~ you, you wouldn't let me down."

Adelaide, despite her ladylike demeanor, seems to match Foster in mug size and quantity. Though it had effected her perception, slightly, of the compliments.

"Does this mean I get a nice, hefty bonus, Mr. Bossman?" She asks, giving him a practiced 'gimme' look-the same she had used on her father whenever she asked for a pony-using those pleasantly sparkling blue eyes to full effect.

Though Foster was probably accustomed to their charm by now...

"Can't give you cash I don't have, Lady Sai. Unless you'd accept forms of payment other than money. I can do you a nice song on my harp, if you'd like."

*blink, blink*

"Oh, we should totally charge more then! Then you could pay me more, you..Mr...handsome devil, you.

But, I do love when you play 'Let's belt Alcodia to the stars above'. It's an old Kernician favorite!"

She clears her throat, belching slightly. Then begins to sing in a slightly inebriated, yet oddly pretty voice.

When the moon hits your face, like an old rusty mace...that's Alcodia...
When the sun burns your bum, like an empty kettle of rum...that's Alcodia...

"What would I bring to the table? Well, as far as I can see, your group has little to no mounted support, doesn't it? I am from Alteria, specifically the village of Gerduo, where the finest of horses are bred and trained, Obviously, I am a mounted warrior. That is what I can bring to the table."

He drank quite as heavily as the other two, showing a remarkable tolerance, as well.

Nathara just kind of looked around awkwardly when Sai sung the song about Alcodia, but ended up responding to Foster, not overtly loud but not much quiet either.
:"Well, I'm from Maskep, and I came here because I tried to be a wandering mage and... it didn't exactly work out. I guess I found out that if I'm going to travel, I had better do it in a group! But yeah, I'm a mage, a scholar of magic actually. I could show you a little magic if you want! I grew up practicing performance magic actually, but ended up getting into real, powerful magic, and since I can't really learn anything better than fire when a civilian, I kinda went out into the world like this! ...And I'd bring good, offensive magic to the table!"
Nathara didn't drink a lot at all, noticeably.

Foster raised his eyebrows.

"Ah, is that so? I'm a bit of a magician myself, although instead of casting from a tome I can turn my very health into power. Not that that's a problem. I have a lot of stamina to burn."

The loremaster grinned and raised a hand. He rolled a small ball of fire along his knuckles, then flicked it up into the air where it came back down as a miniature lightning bolt, striking him in the palm and arcing along his outstretched fingers.

"All the same, a scholar from Maskep and a rider from Altaria... sounds good so far."

(And just so the mages know, minor 'flavor' magic like that can be a thing if you want to have it. :P)

Nathara smiles, clearly excited by the chance to show off magic, and draws a few incredibly basic anima runes straight onto the counter.
She then reads off of the runes as she snaps her fingers, multicolored sparks spring out of her fingers in a light display.
:"Like I said! I started with prestidigitation!"

: "And that leaves me as our only infantryman. I must say, we have an inordinate amount of magical power, yet our physical prowess is only sub-par.

As for me? Joining this outfit is a nice way to get money and some experience at the same time. I'd recommend about keeping the pants on though, bad things happen to folks with loose belts as they say. And as a request, you mind not singing that one song about Alcodia, that sort of thing gets on my nerves..."
Ralai said in a rather neutral voice, not betraying much about the fencer at all.

:"Like I said! I started with prestidigitation!"

"You and I might get along very well indeed."

Foster closed his hands, then opened them again to reveal arcs of electricity between them. Every few seconds, one of the arcs would explode quietly into bursts of colors and patterns.

"You wouldn't believe how much showing off a little magic can help a performance... and get tips."

: "And that leaves me as our only infantryman. I must say, we have an inordinate amount of magical power, yet our physical prowess is only sub-par.

"Ah, well. Can't please everyone I suppose. Adelaide, Elian, what do you two think?"

Foster was probably going to accept them regardless; he had a good feeling about them, and if he turned out to be wrong he could just fire them later. Assuming they didn't die first. He wanted to hear his companion's opinions anyway.

Adelaide grins in a foolish, carefree manner.

"Oh yes, Mr. Bossm...er, Mr. Foster is quite the accomplished man. In many ways.

But, uh, and I'm sure he would not be keen to tell you, he tends to push himself a little too hard in battle. Like I say sometimes, he casts from the heart, and not from the head. And too much of that can be...unhealthy."

She turns to him then, a flicker of emotion passing through both her own inordinate stubbornness and the haze of alcohol-concern for another persons well-being. In much of the fights that had come before, Adelaide has helped Foster from overtaxing himself with her healing powers, possibly even from killing himself with them, though she didn't believe there had been any close calls yet.

In fact, she could feel-in a way-the lifeforce of a persons body, though concentrating on exactly how gave her a headache. She felt an ebb from Foster's lifeforce now, a minor one, but still. A minor expenditure of his own energy, wasted in admittedly amusing theatrics. That was the person he was, though. She would never admit it, but the man kept her worrying about him at times.

"...Well, a more conventional magician can cast without risking their reserves like he does. Which is why she's an excellent candidate, wouldn't you say so Mr. Foster?" She finishes, a little too quickly to be casual.

She gives Nathara a casual grin as she says this, though. One had to admit, she had some...panache?

Ralai said in a rather neutral voice, not betraying much about the fencer at all.

"Oh, I don't like dislike Alcodians...but I'm Kernican, you know? Even the rope skipping rhymes I learned as a little girl would burn your ears...

Anyway, we could use her, right Mr. Foster? We do have a definite lack of...people in armor to stand in front of me. I'm a helpless, sweet little Cleric who would never harm a fly and Elian is a uh...opportunity specialist..."

He drank quite as heavily as the other two, showing a remarkable tolerance, as well.

Finally she remembers to address the horseman.

"Oh, we could totally use him. He could save me from having to walk across the field! My poor feet...ow...you make us walk so much Mr. Foster."

"Are you certain that's a 'her', Adelaide?"

Foster was leaning slightly more toward a 'him' right now. Ralai was either a pretty boy or a slightly boyish girl and it felt impolite to think of... him?... as the latter. He shook it off.

"Regardless, duly noted. Next time we get a decent haul I'll see about buying a wagon. We could make pretty good money doing some freelance trading in addition to guard work. And if they're hurting, then I'll rub your feet tonight."

The loremaster winked at her.

"Should I consider it time spent on the job? Or maybe I should be paying you?" She teases, her tongue flicking out childishly.

"Oh, you. You're the best boss ever. Compliments, good pay, foot rubs...and you totally haven't gotten us all killed yet, which is a certain bonus many employers overlook." She said, with a charming smile. It was a game they played. Adelaide had found Foster liked having his ego stroked. As did she.

And yet, the gulf between commander and soldier-or more perhaps, romance and pragmatism-demanded a certain emotional distance in Adelaide's own mind. She had been careful encouraging his affections, but not playing upon them, noting that no matter how much they might like each other...she was still working for him, and he had a mercenary group to be responsible for, not just her. This was not because she was worried about being fired. Some part of her moral fiber, as weak as it sometimes seemed, saw that it would not be right to risk others peoples lives by pursuing a relationship in that matter.

Until these annoying facts changed, this was the careful dance they performed.
