I've always written it as newb, but i sometimes see it as noob.

Mean is a shortening of newbie, meaning to be a newcomer to something. I believe noob is a more Internet related version, also spelt as n00b.

Also noob is most often used today as an insult while calling someone a newbie is not meant to upset. I think, don't quote me on this one.
