Welcome to Stokershoots. In this succession fortress we will be imitating the humans by building a beautiful city on the coast.

RULES
1. The only things that you can put underground are 2 6x6 plump helmet farms, for basic food, a food stockpile, and rooms for miners. All the rest must be built above ground.

2. Houses can fit only 4 dwarves each.

3. Stockpiles must be in warehouses.

4. Nobles get mansions. This is late game, however.

5. Workshops must have their own buildings, an exception is that multiple can go in the same if they are in the same industry.

6. Danger rooms are permitted, but along with the barracks, they must be above ground.

GOALS
1. Build a town hall, at least 3 stories high.

2. Have a town square.

3. Have a harbor.

4. Reach a population of 100.

5. Reach adamantine.

YEAR ONE (bsnott)

Spring
Today is the day that we learn to embrace the sunlight. We will no longer live in the dark. The dwarves of Stokershoots will know the world! The day is started unlike most. Instead of mining into the side of a hill, I designated many trees to be chopped down, so that we could build a house to sleep in. I then designated an area inside of the mountain for farming, because who doesn't love some good old plump helmets? It started raining soon after I gave out orders. Damn you, mother nature!

A dwarf like myself would never have known what it was like out here. I used to be a bookkeeper for a fortress known as Shakecloistered. I left when a migrant wave came with damn near twenty babies. I couldn't live with the crying! Luckily the queen understood my troubles, and made me a high-class noble. I toured the dwarven fortresses of the world, basking in the glory. Soon enough, I grew bored of the underworlds that us dwarves lived in. I visited the great human city of Drinktips, and I was in awe of it's high-up buildings (and tall people). It was then that I decided that dwarves deserve this, and better. A month later, after the paperwork was in order, and I had a crew and a colonial kit, we set off to this coastline.

We got the first farm set up, alongside a food stockpile inside the cave (a bit of cheating, but meh), and set up a wood stockpile with a partially natural overpass.



A few days later we managed to get another room set up, big enough for some workshops.



Coming to the ending of spring I decided that we should dig further for stone, for building purposes. We found dolomite, and I ordered an area of it to be mined. I also set everyone to be able to be able to do carpentry and masonry, so that building gets done quicker. I end spring by roofing off the warehouse building.

Summer
To start Summer I threw some doors on the warehouse and workshop buildings. The next logical thing to do would be to establish housing for the dwarves. I turned the hillside into an even cliff, like a wall.



Just after the work is finished, some migrants arrive. A whole two of them, a potter and a fishery worker. They immediately become farmers/haulers/builders. I order the stone houses to be built, and doors to go with them. They turn out beautifully.



I also order the removal of all ramps leading into our village area. Soon enough, a wall will be built to keep out invaders. To start off with some kind of fortification, I begin construction of a tower that will be easy to protect but that we can get up the hill from. Thus ends summer.

Autumn
After I designate the building of this tower, yet another wave of migrants arrive, this time a wave of seven. A good few of them were useless, so those among them that were have been drafted into the militia. As it would seem, they all know how to handle one weapon or another.

Finally, a merchant caravan has arrived! I quickly order a depot to be built in the center, as I had a plan for the wall that involved it being there. I ordered the craftsman to make rock crafts while we stalled the merchants.



Suddenly, with horror, I realize that I have forgotten to have a still built. These poor dwarves have gone months with no booze! How was I not reminded?! The speed with which the dwarves build the still is faster than they could run from a dragon. With extreme haste, the still is built and booze is brewed. With that, autumn comes to an end, and winter entombs us.

Winter
The craftsman hurries to build trade-able items, the miners continue to quarry dolomite for building, and everyone else goes about the usual tasks. I notice that most dwarves have little to do, and that we have a decent amount of stone. Today I ordered the construction of the wall, or at least the start of it. Sadly, the merchants leave before any trading can happen, so it looks like we're on our own. All of winter is consumed by the construction of the wall. The only interesting thing that happened was when some dwarf decided to take a nap right on the place where the wall was to be built, halting construction. This is the framework for the early-game wall.



My turn ends with building a fourth "apartment" room. This area will (I would like at least) become the keep, these rooms becoming the barracks, and the outside of this area becoming the rest of the city. The wall built around this keep area will from now on be known as "The Old Wall".

SPRING

Ingiz Edtulnish, the Clothier

So, here I am, to rule this hamlet for the next year. I immediately became the expedition leader, as this site require one.
First off, I've checked the stocks – disaster! No bookkeeper is assigned yet! Of course, I've choosen the best person for this task.
I quickly ordered the building of the new housing for our brand-new 'book-menager', and after a week or so, It was done!



In the meantime, someone has married!



But there were no party, sadly.



Some migrants have arrived! 17, to be precise.
Our next step was making more houses, obviously, and a dining hall.
I also made some makeover on existing houses, to make them look nicer.

SUDDENLY, A FEY MOOD!



HE CLAIMED THE CRAFTSDWARWF'S WORKSHOP!
HE TOO 3 OF OUR SWEET, PRECIOUS BITUMINOUS COAL. HOPE THAT WILL BE WORTH IT!

A FUCKING DRUM?! WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH IT?!

On the bright side, we got a skilled stone crafter!

They didn't brought anything interesting, so I just ignored them.

It is not yet the time to fight...soon...

As I was not paying attention, the fight(s) emerges beetween our animals!



They're all fine, don't worry. Just a few bruises...

SUMMER

At the start of the summer, we get another wave of migrants – 8 of them this time.
I decided to start building something more than apartments.
As I was planning the walls, the buzzards came and started to attack our hard-working miners!
In my bloodlust I immediately created a squad, which consisted of the best marksdwarves walking on the earth and they quickly vanquished the enemy. The town is safe!
I  also decided to put some.... dolomite windows inside the upper apartments. That should look nice.

And so the summer is gone. Pretty quickly, I have to say. Humans decided no to come. Also, almost no progress.

AUTUMN

At the start of the autmn I finally menaged to lay down the walls for the dining hall and for some storages.
I also decided to make the drawbridge more drawer and more bridger.
Generally, I was preparing everything to make it from the stone.



I will try to use the same pattern for workshops, as for bedrooms.
Migrants! 12 of them!
And, at least, the dwarven caravan. I have prepared some stone crafts alredy, so let's see how it goes.
Just after that arrival, one of the miners make a small collapsion . Hopefully it was only one tile of floor.
From the outpost liaison I ordered some leather, chickens and gypsum plaster.
Just after I closed the screen, a thief appears! He didn't take our drum, we're safe.



Meanwhile, on the trade depot, I taded all of our crafts for cloth, leather, food and some misc. Junk.

WINTER

And here we go, the last season.

Nothing interesting happened, really. Just polishing some stuff, placing more walls etc.

YEAR THREE (Kolnukbyne)

Spring
1st of Granite, 128.
My first day on the fort and Sarvesh Dorensolon, a fish dissector, is in the mason's workshop screaming for metal bars, rough gems and rocks. I hope that the fort has the supplies needed to satiate his hunger for creation.
Taking notice of the many idle dwarves I decide to assign some to gather plants. Perhaps we can begin growing some above-ground crops.

9th of Granite, 128.

Metal! We have struck galena! Hopefully Sarvesh will be pleased by this and finish whatever the hell he's working on.

10th of Granite, 128.

A Kobold within the walls?! Madness! Our squad, the newly-renamed Dudes of Hittin' are on the case. The poor blighter barely moved before being brutally shot down.

16th of Granite,  128.

Sarvesh, the determined man of steel has begun his mysterious construction! There's a large roach in the food stockpile, euch.

20th of Granite, 128.

It is done. Sarvesh has completed Stalkfray the Band of Squashing, a dolomite millstone. While the object itself is underwhelming it fittingly honours these pioneers of a new way of dwarven life by depicting the founding of our glorious Stokershoots.


It's also worth a mighty buttload.

In less exciting news I have begun construction of a new wood warehouse as the current one is full and not very efficiently placed. This new one will be placed close to the current workshops and will also connect to a wood burning furnace.


15th of Slate, 128.

Buzzards are harassing the dwarves and interrupting jobs. This is no good at all! Our above-ground crops have begun planting. Soon we shall drink the wine of strawberries and prickle berries! One of the buzzards has fallen into our cage traps. We'll probably eat 'im.

21st of Slate, 128.

Migrants. More come to live above the earth. Twenty-one of them! Let us hope they contribute well to the fort. We are now only two dwarves away from out goal of one-hundred citizens of Stokershoots!

18th of Felsite, 128.

We've struck native silver! I have also decided that as the fort is beginning to become a bit overcrowded I will begin construction on some more traditional homes, not connected to the main building.

19th of Felsite, 128.

Elves! Tree-trading point-ears have arrived wanting to trade with us. We'll tolerate them, for now, but if they think that just because we're above the ground we're going to welcome them like the humans do then they are sorely mistaken. Let's see what they've got.

They have nothing interesting. We buy some alcohol and a little bit of food (you can never be too prepared!) and ignore them until they vacate our lovely home. I wish they would listen when we tell them to leave instead of just stand there smiling at us.

Summer
1st of Hematite, 128

Summer is bearing down upon us and I place some tables and chairs in what I believe was intended to be the dining hall. Chow's on, boys!

14th of Hematite, 128

Well these dogs have been fully grown and untrained for some time. It's time for them to be trained for WAR and placed around the fortress grounds to detect and attack intruders.

25th of Hematite, 128

A new wave of migrants! A smaller wave, only thirteen, but that has brought us to over one-hundred citizens! Rejoice!

27th of Hematite, 128

What is this?! We have a Mayor? Morul Litastigam is our mayor and he is mandating the construction of amulets! What's more he's requesting HOUSING and LUXURY?! The nerve! Well then, I guess we'd better hop to it.

2nd of Malachite, 128

Excitement! Id Esshorast, Metalcrafter, has been taken by a fey mood! Unfortunately he's not moving. I believe he wants a forge, yet we have no anvil to make one. This does not bode well.

A kobold thief runs afoul of one of our hunters. A rattlesnake watches. Id has moved a single tile to the south-west.

Zulban Esavuz is on a roll, Masterpieces all over the place!

Id hasn't done anything, still. Our new Jeweler's workshop has been constructed in a FABULOUS purple room, as I forgot that Gabbro was purple.


1st of Galena, 128

Miraculous! Id has given birth while standing around like a munchkin and doing nothing. Perhaps she'll use the child as an anvil.


11th Galena, 128

Oh no. The Savanna Titan Sod Sodgitnuk has come. I will try to bring everyone inside the walls and bring up the drawbridge as I don't believe our military is currently strong enough to repel him.

Oh no. The bridge hasn't been linked up to a lever. I send the military dwarves out to hold him off and hopefully get the bridge working.
SHIT. The windows. Those windows were a terrible idea; he just bust right on through. He's rampaging'.


16th Galena 128

Sod is still about, a few dwarves and dogs have been killed. Id has finally gone berserk, her lack of a forge to use has destroyed her. Will we survive?

YES. We will and did. Geshud Istrathalath delivered a fatal brain-bruising kick to the titan, endings its life. Three of our Marksdwarves were slain in the battle. Avuz Uzolamal, Erith Ralkikrost and Ushat Nazomoddom, may you rest in peace.

17th Galena 128

Id has been put down. Our war dogs were vital in keeping her at bay while the remains of our military arrived.

In all this carfuffle I failed to notice that human merchants have arrived! Hope they have an anvil.[/size]

Autumn
7th Limestone, 128

Autumn has come and I didn't even notice. We finally have an anvil, however. Rejoice!


13th of Limestone, 128

I have noticed dwarves shedding their tattered clothes: I have begun manufacturing of new clothes.

I have also begun manufacturing of equipment for soldiers, albeit low quality equipment: silver maces and copper armour. It's better than nothing, at least.

19th of Limestone, 128

A new squad, the Earthen Boulders has been formed. I am contemplating how I should create a barracks and where. Possibly separate from the rest of the fort: if they are outside the walls they are able to quickly respond to threats.

20th of Limestone, 128

More migrants. Wahey! Our population increases by fifteen.

5th of Sandstone 128

After the earlier disruptions the mood has finally quelled and work has begun on the all-important mayor's house. Lets hope it pleases him. Likewise, the barracks is underway.


21st Sandstone 128

I've decided to add some gem windows to the Mayor's house and some of the other houses to snazzy the place up a bit. They're in places that won't compromise the safety of the fort.

Oh my! The child Olin Likotud has suddenly been taken by a fey mood! I shall watch her closely. She has claimed a craftsdwarf workshop! Wood… wood… leather… trek into the mines for some mica… more leather… BEGIN!


2nd Timber 128

Olin has finished her work: Belalmorul, the Famous Pages, a… Birchen cup.


Tragedy! A different Olin: Olin Kolrab, dwarven baby, has died of thirst!
We're in dire need of more non-economic stone to use and a place to store it all.

14th of TImber, 128

The outpost liaison and caravan from the Mountainhome has arrived. It is near the end of autumn and I soon will be entering my final season as overseer of the fort.

20th of Timber, 128

Barracks is functional, if not nice-looking. The Earthen Boulders are scheduled to train 7 soldiers at a time for every month, to allow for break time.


25th of Timber, 128

The caravan has refused to trade with us due to a poor appraiser attending to the depot as the Broker was too busy doing everything but his job. Unfortunate, but we have not lost anything great.
From the Liaison I have requested the import of Iron and Steel, as we are currently unable to fashion higher quality metal goods, Cave spider and pig-tail cloth, alcohol, Leathers and coke.

Winter
2nd of Opal, 128

I have begun an expansion of the central fort by adding a second level to the dining hall and finally adding stone flooring. While I was tempted to make the upper walls out of silver to make use of the excess of the metal that we have I decided to stick with dolomite blocks. Likewise, I have started patching up holes in hastily constructed areas of the fortress. Consider this my term of cleaning before the next overseer steps in.


7th of Opal, 128

While viewing construction of some roofs I find mysterious spattering of kobold blood. No combat reports or kobold sightings can testify to its origins. Perhaps we should improve security against skulking filth somehow.
EVERYWHERE! This blood is flipping' everywhere! Jastayldin, I don't know who you are but you have a lot of blood for a kobold.


12th of Opal, 128

Our supply of Dolomite blocks is running low once again. Fear not, this problem will be short-lived.

2nd of Obsidian, 128

The year is ending, as is my time with the fort. In my final month I am simply smoothing up any constructions and making sure that everything is working as planned.

I hope I have done well in the time I've spent on the fort. I probably could have done more, but I guess it's too late for that. My advice to the next player is first and foremost, investing in a stronger military is probably a good idea. Also we have a bugger-tonne of silver and lead, maybe find a way to use that. Build the harbour out of it?[/size]

Spring
Right off the bat, the butcher gets possessed.

And starts working at a craftsdwarf workshop with only this.

Apparently he was possessed by blandness.


I set up a cistern fed via pump. Well is built directly above it it, near the back of the fort.


The dwarves are tracking this one kobold's blood EVERYWHERE. It's rather impressive.


Did a little work on the barracks. I removed the beds since I find them unnecessary; no reason they can't go sleep in one of the normal houses. I built lodgings for the captain of the guard to the south(I gave him the shitty coffer the butcher made). Moved the weapon/armor stockpile into its own room to the west. Also built an archery range to the east.

12th Hematite, Early Summer

The first thing I do is order a mining shaft going all the way down. This place is not dwarfy enough. Also, I dwarfed myself as the miner/broker.

21 Hematite

The merchants just left. The digging continues, with two silver veins and one sphalerite vein found, along with two kimberlite veins (which hopefully have diamonds and other gems in them).

9 Malachite

Success! The mining shaft found the lowest cavern level!


Even better, there was an adamantine spire!

Work must immediately start to get some of it.

13 Malachite

Deep mining revealed the magma sea. Additionally, there have been no mining accidents yet.


26 Malachite

"Cerol Osestbomrek, clothier is taken by a fey mood!" I hope he makes something useful...

27 Malachite

The adamantine vein is mined out as much as seems safe. Further mining will require precautions to prevent cases of FUN, !!FUN!!, and mass dwarf death.

Stone stocks are looking good. I might want to mine out a bit more stone though.


6 Galena

I set up a temporary adamantine refinery. Once the map is cleared of adamantine, it can be removed.


Since I'm also finishing Mouseshy's turn, I've decided to start on a 15 z-level tower that goes a ways up. It's not like we'll run out of stone, and it'll train our masons. I'm planning on making it

The moody dwarf finally finished. We got a very useless item (but are clothier moods ever that useful)?

The human caravan arrived, time to bring all the useless clutter valuable items to get rid of.

Working on a path over to the barracks. They need to be able to get to the fort fast if there's an emergency.


Also, the tower is going well. The first layer is almost done, but this tower might take a while to finish.

2 Limestone

I finally got around to trading. The humans had mostly useless things, so I just gave them a few dozen lead bars in return for some wood, cloth, and leather (along with one gold nugget).


9 Limestone

Some rough estimates for the tower I'm building:
88 blocks per level for 15 levels = 1320 blocks, plus a bit more for the roof and rooms at the top.

17 Limestone

The merchants left. I should have some trade goods made by the time the dwarf caravan arrives. Hopefully they bring another anvil, since we only have one forge right now.


25 Limestone

The miners found yet another silver vein. Since we have 391 silver bars already, I've decided to use silver trap components in trading.

2 Sandstone

The tower is almost 1/3 of the way done.


16 Sandstone

I've discovered that we have WAY too many animals. All the bunnies, lots of cats, and most of the puppies are being slaughtered.


17 Sandstone

Half the tower is finished. After I finish the next floor, I'll let the dwarves stop so they don't all get rusty in their normal skills.


19 Sandstone

A dwarf just went insane. Luckily, he's just a useless fish dissector. It seems I don't quite have enough clothing.


23 Sandstone

It's time to make some more bedrooms; we only have 100 beds for 195 dwarves. Also, I've halted work on the tower while more rock blocks are made. It has 9/16 layers finished, along with a stairwell that goes all the way up and a few unfinished layers.


25 Sandstone

Finally, some combat (if not much). A kobold thief showed up and ran straight at the barracks, a war dog attacked him, a hunter shot him, and then the same hunter bashed his head in with a bronze crossbow.

26 Sandstone

"Some migrants have arrived". Most migrants were useless, but I did get a great metalsmith and an adequate strand extractor.

2 Timber

Another strange mood, this time it's a child. Hopefully he picks something useful like a forge to make an artifact in.

Later in the day, he claims a craftsdwarf's workshop. Looks like he won't make anything too useful, but he might be good for making trade goods later in life.

9 Timber

Just ordered every tree on the map (except the caverns) cut down. Since we have no coal veins and I haven't moved magma up yet, there is a huge demand for logs to fuel furnaces.

16 Timber

The moody child finally finished her artifact: (value is a huge 922800)

We also got a legendary stone crafter out of this; sadly she is only 6 years old. At least someone down the line will get a legendary stonecrafter.

The dwarf caravan just arrived. Time to bring some trade goods.

3 Moonstone

I traded a bit with the traders, but we don't have enough trade goods yet. I did make sure to get all their anvils, though.

Oops.

Two simultaneous accidents caused quite a few deaths. In one, two dwarves were melted by magma. In the other, I had both construction and deconstruction going at once, and there were some unsupported floors. Collapsing floors killed 3 and hurt quite a few more. Luckily, it was only some useless dwarves that died.

23 Moonstone

The traders left. I'd have traded more, but the trader decided to spend several weeks on break. If he wasn't legendary in two skills (and dorfed as me), I'd dump him into the magma sea.

1 Opal

I've decided to start work on the tower again.

There hasn't been much to report; I've just been working on the tower and a second project (I'll say what it is when I finish). However, I found another cavern level.


3 Obsidian

A miner just mooded!

4 Obsidian

He claimed a mason's workshop (not a surprise).

I was found dead at the bottom of a long mineshaft. I think I'll turn off mining on the other legendary miner for now.

Also, Nish Udibshem (another miner) is the new broker.

A giant mole got into the mineshaft and walked around for a few days while my military got to it. It's dead now, but it scared all my miners away.

Spring has arrived!

Well, not much happened this season (besides lots of accidents). Mouseshy's turn (and year 4) is finished, now I'll take my turn. The tower is almost done, and I'm working on a method to get magma to the surface fast. Current fort population is 201, with 60 children. Total value is 1734862.

To appease a mood, I'm removing the depot (to get wood) and rebuilding it with rock.

We just lost another 9 8 miners in a cave-in (one managed to survive the fall with lots of injuries). Luckily, the broker and the legendary miner are both safe. However, we are out of unskilled miners.

The elven caravan arrived (hopefully with lots of wood) and the burial area is in progress.

The human caravan arrived. Also, I discovered that someone made a figurine of my dwarf as he was dying from impact.

A kobold thief came. The dwarfs accidentally killed a merchant guard instead.

There's a project I've been working on for most of the time I've been overseer. I'll talk more about it when I'm done, but it's how I killed 10 miners.

Not much to report (besides working on the project) until now.

The fort population is 210, the highest so far. There are finally enough children to replace the dead miners.

I've mostly finished the minecart route from lava to an area for magma forges at the surface. Sadly, there were some problems with picking up magma. This is the project I've been working on.

For the first time, collapsing some rock did not kill anyone. It still killed someone, but it was an unskilled miner.

In the end, the only death was a child that got in the way. A speardwarf killed it with only minor injuries.

So, a report of the fortress now.











A note about the minecart-based magma mover: I wasn't quite able to complete it. It needs walls at every turn to stop the minecart from flying off, but I already queued that. However, the top of it needs to be modified to have some track stops to slow the cart. Also, while the magma chamber has doors that seem like they would let the magma out, they are tightly sealed.

The next person needs to give the nobles proper houses in the tower. The baron has a room and a tomb, but not a good enough office or dining room. The mayor needs a lot of things. There will also be some mandates.

Finally, make sure you are careful with the skilled dwarves, especially the legendary miner/talented weaponsmith/accomplished armorsmith and the legendary miner/high master appraiser.

edit: raise the bridge by the trader entrance. The lever is the one that's off by all the coffins.
