Spore? Spore.
« on: August 16, 2013, 04:31:48 pm »

We all know Spore, the 2008 game which didn't live up to the press it got, but is still pretty damn fun.
I was thinking if we had a Bay12 Sporepedia page, we could all mess around with eachothers creations!
Fun eh?

I have no beef with spore! I've been playing it recently in fact.

I think once you get past the hype that was promised (and yes, broken promises are always a shame but it's happened and it's time to move on), it's still a more or less fine game. Is it a triple A game.... I dunno. But I had fun with it!

Space stage lasts entirely too long and breaks down into doing the same handful of things over and over again, which is kind've a theme through the entire game honestly, space just takes it to an unbearable extreme. Heading out and expanding an empire by terraforming planets and such is fairly satisfying! It's just that you can only do it so long. And the reward is.... you get to do it more! Great.

At the end of the day it's a neat little game, and just by virtue of the customization tools it's pretty great. Of course one could say that was the flaw with it, that it basically comes down entirely to making neat things and parading them around. I can't argue with that, and I would agree. But the fact that the game has been carried by those customization tools almost entirely on their own for quite a distance is certainly something to be said about it too.

Well, since we have a Spore thread I might as well ask a Spore question: I got Spore on Steam, skipped to the Space stage, and it never gives me the scanner or whatever I need to scan the shipwreck. Halp.

Why would you skip to space? No class or abilities, man.

I dunno though.

Well, since we have a Spore thread I might as well ask a Spore question: I got Spore on Steam, skipped to the Space stage, and it never gives me the scanner or whatever I need to scan the shipwreck. Halp.

Two ideas.

One, Space stage starts with something of a tutorial, there's a way to formally skip it, but if you do part of it then take off I believe you can get off planet ahead of the script - if so, you can reach the planet where you are supposed to scan the crashed ship, but without a scanner.  The fix if this is your problem is to check your questline and continue it, at least to the next point where you can reject the rest of the training quests and just follow the main story line.

The other idea is that you have been given your scanner, but do not know how to find it.  Your inventory has several tabs, and only one of the (general tools, or something similar?) contains your scanner.  You have to open the correct tab, then select the correct tool, then the fire button and mouse will control your scanner use properly.

If neither of these ideas fixes your issue, then you may have a bug or other problem, and it's past my advice to fix.

At the risk of turning this into a DRM debate, what was the DRM even? I've never come across it.  :P

I will admit that while Spore was disappointing and that Will's version would have been better (sure the gameplay wouldn't have been better... but 'fun' isn't the only thing important in a game. SimEarth was a frustrating annoying game, but I still consider it a great game)

Yet I still would like a sequel.

Sorry, didn't mean to derail the topic. It's just to my recollection, one of the reasons I didn't play this game was due to the installation limits. Despite its shortcomings, I was impressed by the creature creator.

You can only download it a certain number of times, then the activation code stops working.
Which is why I don't play anymore; used up all my activations on a different computer.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spore_(2008_video_game)#DRM_controversy

Short version: it installs a rootkit on you computer that checks with EA to confirm that your product key is not associated with more than X computers in the world. Not a popular move, obviously, but much of the controversy was due to the fact that EA didn't tell anyone the game did this.
