My brother always listens to my fortress stories and appreciates Dwarf Fortress as one of the most complex games ever made, but he would be the last one on earth to actually play it.

Fixed that for ya, deepdowner.

I had a tough time trying to explain the Armok thing when my family saw the title, but that was the hardest part.  For the most part they just ignore me and my little dwarves.  They listen a little to DF related jokes like bathing yourself when you have no arms.
I told my brother about it and he seemed a little interested.  He told his boss, who is a big gamer, but the boss just couldn't understand anything at all from the screenshots on the website.  They think I'm crazy for staring at the "moving code" as my mom calls it.
My dad likes to hear about the different machines and mechanisms I come up with but that's about it there.
Overall, I'm viewed as very weird for even being able to understand all the little dots and dashes, and my mom was absolutely certain that DF was wrecking my eyes (but not my emotional stability or outlook on life I guess? haha)  They usually just give me a blank look when I tell them stories from my forts or from forts like boatmurdered.  The lonely child sitting on top of piles of corpses playing with a few stones brought a particularly odd look and a shake of the head.

Lol the first thing my mom saw of the game was when she looked over my shoulder as I was reading the alcohol page on the wiki. She was kinda weirded out, and my stumbling explanation about alcohol making dwarves happy didn't help.

I introduced Dwarf Fortress to two of my cousins.  They both think it's totally awesome but cannot understand the controls or ASCII.  Whenever I visit them I'm always forced to dig out fortresses for them.  They really like listening to my fortress stories though, and they'll probably figure out how to play it at some point.

I introduced Dwarf Fortress to my mother and she thinks it's a violent and ugly game.  It didn't help I went in-depth on the amazing wound/healthcare system and FB generator.   She doesn't openly object to me playing it, but she finds the fact I play it "unusual", especially since she can't understand a single thing that goes on my screen while I'm playing.

You guys are lucky, i can barely help my mother figure out whats on her phone, exposing her to this would just break her brain >_>

As far as the ASCII goes, I use Phoebus' textures. Makes the game 100% more playable.

Your mum gives you ideas about your fort? I'm dieing to know how these suggestions look like, i just can't picture a mum seeing how a dwarf is dropped into a spear room and ripped asunder and her just going "hmmm, maybe you should make a window and weaponize it so the body parts fly directly into the invaders faces, and maybe build a switch so you can change direction in which you want to fire. But don't forget about your homework alright?""

You have no idea.

MMOs are full of stay at home moms, and some of them are super hardcore. When I still played WoW two of my best raid members were stay at home moms. One healer, one DPS. Their husbands played too but weren't nearly as good. Nor as brutal, nor as focused on improving their performance, nor as foul-mouthed.

And though I've lost touch with the gamer moms I've known since quitting WoW, I'm pretty confident they wouldn't bat an eye at weaponizing corpse explosion shrapnel.

Couldn't even explain the game to my sister, Ironhand's tileset already gives her headaches.

My mother was laughing hysterically after I explained me setting fire to everything around my fort through an overly complicated set of pumps and magma simply so I could killed the damned elves and titans stomping around. Then again, she is a pretty hardcore gamer.

None of my family plays this one. My mom likes watching and listening to the stories once in a while. I'm not sure if she can keep up with the screens, but she likes that I can. My father . . . well, he thinks I game too much as it is. My brother thought it was retro when he saw it. He's somewhat of a graphics snob, so no dice on getting him on DF.

My girlfriend played for a bit, but she prefers games where you're more . . . direct in combat. I might entice her to play Adventure mode later on.

Ah.... A thread about my family's reactions to Dwarf Fortress turns into one about pornography.
Why am I not surprised?

That was a completely appropriate analogy!
