How do you find a kobold-cave or lair-with-megabeast/werebeast before you embark?

Using Legends Viewer. You just check every cave's population 'till you find one which has them.

Ah, fair enough. I thought so, but rarely make the effort. I just ask because I sometimes had lairs, but never had a kobold-cave to embark on. Anyone has an embark save for me to have a look at? sounds like fun.

If you make caves always visible when you gen the world you can easily check their populations in Legends Viewer and then find the right cave on the embark screen.

Just be careful when you embark with the cave at the center of your area, since your dwarves will likely plant themselves directly on top of the cave spire, and sometimes the wagon can have issues.

Yeah, I often embark on caves, just never checked population with LegendsViewer.

Btw, if a cave is noted to be one or next to a river on the world-gen map, then the cave wont be there... the two landscapes override each other, river wins.

Looking with LW I actually found a kobold camp, other than caves. I embarked on it and what I found was a small tribe of twelve Kobold "Camps" (I mean the kobolds from the mod, not the vanilla ones). They were all military and were stationed around a pair of {bags} full of {presumably stolen objects}. They had no buildings and weren't hostile, so I was going to take their {bags}, but then my game crashed. And my computer crashed.

With the recent success of my more military-oriented embarks, dropping in on a kobold settlement sounds fantastic. I'll have to try this tomorrow...

...And see what !FUN! I can get myself in to whilst seeking the bolds' goodies.

Anticipate some failed hauling job announcements, at least if the cave connects to the 1st cavern level. There will likely be some critter corpses or other trinkets down in the lower levels that you can't see right off the bat, which your dwarves attempt to haul, but can't because they don't actually know where they are.

Having a bookkeeper will hopefully allow you to forbid the stuff, but if all else fails blocking the entrance to the cave (or the caverns inside the cave) until you are ready to venture down there will clear up the spam.

I uset to try to run for the first cavern level and seal it off from above, when caves weren't so ridicolously overcrowded, then I could have dug out the rubble layers of the cavern, creating natural looking open caves for me.

Barring annoyingly challenging critters, you could just embark with 3-5 military dwarfs and clear it out first thing, no?

I play as Kobolds. Even if they had armors, soldiers would eventually die for a lucky kick in the head because Kobolds don't have proper helmets. Anyway, I might give that a shot when I'm done murdering other Kobolds in the sewers.
