How do I make a world with few dwarves?
« on: August 26, 2013, 07:53:41 pm »

I'm looking to make a world with very few dwarven civilizations so I can play as a 'last resort' outpost. Ideally I'd like a world with just one dwarven civ with as few historical figures as possible. I like changing forts and having 90% of my immigrant population come from my old fort, and this seems to happen when there are only a few dwarves in a civ.

Which advanced world gen parameters do I need to mess with to make this happen?
Thanks everyone! :)

I don't think you can set max civs of a certain type... but if you restrict mountains to be very sparse, that should help with limiting the available sites for dwarven civs to be created.

I had wondered if that might work. What do I alter to make mountains sparse? I'm not very good with worldgen. Everything seems to reject, or have no impact. I probably just change the wrong thing, or the right thing by far too much.

Lower the civilization count, require a playable one, and increase evilness (but not too high); if you still want lots of non-dwarf civs, set up the rates for savagery and plains, and lower mountain rates. Also increase all the types for evil things (secrets, vampires, etc) for much more fun. If the settings give you an error, make them slightly more reasonable, and repeat.

Thanks! When you say 'rates', do you mean the x-y variance? Or minimum square count? Or something else?

I don't know how low of a population you are looking for, but what you can do is tweak the elevation range and frequency to produce lots of flat areas and as few mountains as possible. Additionally, you can stop worldgen early while the population is still small.

You can use the settings in this worldgen as a starting point and tweak as you like. You don't have to copy the whole thing since I was going for flat volcanoes, so this has lots of volcanoes, maybe you don't want so many or you want to tweak other settings. I did manage to create a worldgen with very similar (or the same) settings in which I had only one dwarf civ which had only 4 members left at year 250, so you have the luck of the draw with RNG and it's possible to get populations of only a couple hundred or a few thousand with settings like this one here.

Do you want any other civs besides Dwarven?  Human, Elf, Goblin?

Want barely any? Make the female caste rare. Making 1/5 of dwarves female drastically reduces their population in world gen

You can actually change this in the raws, in entity_default. Under the [ENTITY:MOUNTAIN] tag, find the MAX_STARTING_CIV_NUMBER tag and change the value from 100 to 1.

Thank you all for your help. I'll try it out tonight when I'm not at uni and see how few dwarves I can get. And yes, having plenty of other civs would be good, but I like playing 'the last dwarves'. I think I was inspired by Weatherwires!

[edit] out of curiosity, how do I determine how many members a civ has?

Legends. I dont ever really check personally... perhaps look at historical figures?

When you generate a world hitting "p" exports some files including a map, world_gen params, history, & "sites and pops", at the very top of that last is a listing of the numbers of Dwarves, Elves, Goblins, Humans, & Kobolds currently alive (I believe) in your world at the end of generation.

(these files go to your main dwarf fortress directory, not the save folder)

Try this worldgen (I haven't picked any sites) and if it's not ideal, remove/randomize the seeds and try again.  The parameters should get you close to what you want.  It generates worlds that will typically have all four civs, and just one mountainhome, often extinct.
