Fate of All Worlds - Succession
« on: September 04, 2013, 04:41:40 pm »

As the years passed, fortress after fortress was founded, prospered, and eventually fell to outside attackers or internal strife or horrors from below. The dwarves kept expanding, and fortresses were created in the most unlikely locations - frozen tundra, stinking swamps, evil lands of the living dead. But still the dwarves were digging and building. When there was no land left to build new fortresses in they began reclaiming their fallen ones, expanding them and improving them. Mighty projects were commissioned; towering aboveground buildings and majestic underground halls. Through generations of reclaiming and rebuilding, with each overseer adding something new to their fortress, the space was running out.

The bedrock had been completely carved into a maze of corridors and rooms. The aboveground castles, towers and cathedrals stretched upwards to the sky's limit, then expanded outwards, joined each other, and soon became a single formless mass of building stretching across the world. The cities of humans, elves and goblins were engulfed and their paltry houses, trees and towers nestled deep within the dwarven architecture. Below, the fortresses leaked into the caverns with bridges and buildings and walls. Then there were no caverns anymore, just rooms that were built rather than carved. Finally, with a million legendary victories and a billion deaths, the dwarves went down the adamantine veins, conquered the realm of the demons, and filled it with structure from the slade to the semi-molten rock. Only then did the expansion of the dwarves stop, because nothing was left to expand into. The dwarf fortress covered the world from end to end, from hell's floor to heaven's roof. All that was, was the dwarf fortress.

For centuries without end, this world-metropolis buzzed with the tread of countless dwarves, whole civilizations rose and fell within their ancient walls.  Philosophers of these ancient days attempted to decipher such mysterious pictograms as "horizon", "stream" and "tree".

Over the generations, these ancient peoples stagnated and the number of young ones born was outpaced by the number who fell into Armok's embrace.  The balance of the world's population was given over to tamed animals, to beasts of burden and food and companionship.  Less and less were the ancient and insular peoples of the world given to reproducing their own kind.  What was the point in such useless activity - there was no more that could be done that hadn't been done for hundreds of years already?  The most involved and magnificent of constructions had become ritualized into ancient processes.  Every forgotten beast or demon to have ever existed was displayed in trophy halls engraved with intricate detail.  There was nothing a new citizen of the World-city could ever aspire to other than dying in one of the million manners so well known that they each had cults and high tradition ascribed to each and every one.  So the peoples of the world passed finally into dust, defeated at last by the ennui of their own historical triumphs and the World-city was ruled by the pets and livestock of those who came before.

The world-city slowly crumbled under its own weight, vibrated to dust under the continuous movement of those few surviving beasts.  The farm plots ran rampant through great halls flooded then emptied by the world-city's slow demise.  Some creatures gave birth to giants of their own kind, some to stranger anomalies, which shied away from the clear air and sought deep lairs from which to wander in their freakish madnesses.  A few of the more domesticated breeds sought to roam the rooftops and shallow halls of the upper reaches, avoiding the deep places where the rocks glowed with fire and the slow settling of the ages had deposited odd mixtures to seethe and bubble in the flames.  Time continued its inexorable progress and the World-city steadily lost its battle with relentless entropy.

It was once said, by some long deceased philosopher of the four thousandth Golden Age: "Nature abhors a vacuum, seek not fresh carp within your dining halls".  He was half correct, for fresh carp was all the rage at the time - being eaten while also eating was a novel way to die and later that century was inducted into the million traditional rituals of dying.  No, his first part was the more true.  Nature abhors a vacuum and the Gods abhor silence.  As the peoples died off, so too did the Gods revert to the timeless forces of nature they had been before peoples trod and shaped the world.  Then as now, the forces eventually became satiated with the surfeit of silence and reached out here and there to give voices to those that seemed best able to use them.

Some forces withdrew to the lower fires and mouldering halls of the deeps, touching inert stone to quickening life or shaping flames into malevolent gaurdians, while others merely gave voices and waited - content to see what these new peoples would make of their world.

Time is an arrow and entropy ceaseless, but the arrow is a spiral and entropy tangential.  Round and and round this entropy cycles the world: creation, diaspora, transformation, dissoulution and destruction.  Round and round in unending variation, worlds without end. What are deities, but aspects of entropy in reverse?  All is balanced, all is complete until time itself eats its own tail and every permutation is represented in that one great cycle.

Not the fate of all worlds, I'm afraid.. Most of the ones I create tend to be discarded after a few adventurers have explored them partly, or after one or two failed fortresses have been constructed.

This however would be a megaproject worthy of the name megaproject.

Not quite the end.  You see, to maintain their constructions, the dwarves use sourced water and magma to manufacture obsidian out of infinite resources, or in some regions may just make glass blocks to build with.  As population increases, so does the need for rooms, and the need for walls.  However, the slow process of generating matter eventually reaches a point where it can no longer be sustained, and the mass of dwarven achievement begins to become... problematic.  As the dwarves mine and build and mine and build, farming obsidian and making glass objects, it all leads towards one inevitable event: at some point in this distant future, when the mass of the world has been impossibly expanded, some miner digs where he oughtn't have dug...

A section of the cavern has collapsed!

At this point, the doom of the world cannot be stopped.  All dwarven creation collapses in on itself.  The depths, where hell used to be, are crushed into a furious, glowing core that radiates violet light, while much of the former "Underground", with less pressure above it, is simply crushed to a skin Slade, most dense of all stones, above the core of violet light.  above that, the heat of the collapse melts many stones and leaves others semi-molten, while layers of rubble accumulate on the surface.

Some life escapes destruction, trapped in air pockets upon the Slade or in the rubble, with very few upon the surface, reduced to utter barbarism.  The violet light of the core transforms those close to it.  The closest survivors become multitudes of foul creatures, while those few, poor souls left in the new underground become unique entities, as do some on the surface in regions where the radiation invisibly seeps from below.

There come cool rains from the clouds of dust that enshrouded the world when all its land was reshaped, carving new rivers in new mountains.  The spores of above-ground plants, drifting through the atmosphere, find purchase as the shattered stone is worn down into soil, while the underworld is enriched as water seeps down below.  Forests grow, and the radiation of the core dies down from its initial fury, leaving no new great monsters to be created upon the surface, where the dwarves, elves, goblins, and kobolds scurry about in their shadows.  Deep beneath, upon the surface of the Slade, the trapped survivors worship the light that wells up from pits that collapsed where the Slade was thin and multiply with its power until they are as numberless as they are hideous.

The world has survived, but it is fundamentally changed: new mountains exist where chance left the highest constructed spires in taller heaps, sedimentary layers formed where the rains of the first dark years washed the particles needed for their creation.  Volcanoes burn and lava cools into igneous stones, while the collapse itself formed metamorphics from whatever was there to fall.  And amidst it all, titans and night creatures roam, perhaps massive bronze statutes wrought by dwarves past in their arrogance walk animate, or birds become bloated to titanic size.  Some of the mutants even eerily resemble the dragons of old...

The dust clouds part and the sky clears.  The peoples of the world stand up once again, and declare that day when a glorious new dawn breaks through the murk to be the beginning of a new age, the very dawn of time.

Welcome to Year 1, the Age of Myth, when living gods and mighty beasts hold sway.

If I set up a tiny world succession game, with the express aim to cover it in fortresses both high and deep starting from some central point and working its way outwards to the edges, who would want to be a part of that undertaking?

Definitely sounds like a solid undertaking. I'm in.

Finished: Weatherwires, the Last Mountainhome. A tragic mix of Children of Men, City of Ember, and, uh, magma.
Stymied: Correspondence from Syrupurns, a prematurely ended narrative, told through annual updates.
In Progress: Roomcarnage, a fortress clinging to life beneath a haunted glacier.

OK, in honor of Lovechild's post, I've generated a pocket world using the Masterwork Mod v3, with 1050 years of history and every race modded to produce cities, dungeons, ect... and able to kidnap/imprison during worldgen.  It is currently The Age of Dwarves, (An appropriate age to begin such an undertaking).

Year 1050

Fortress Turn list: (On hold until the poll results on September 17th determine the will of the Players.)
1. Timeless Bob -
2. DS -
3. Sebastian2203 -
4. Apani -
5. Lovechild -

Turns last for 1 Real life week.  The save link must be posted by the end of that week or your turn is skipped.  New save files will be listed below the old ones in chronological order and any forum posts that happened during that time will be have links next to that save file as well.

Example:
Year 1070
   The Fortress of Despairdaub
   The Journey of Likot sandypants
   The Adventures of Urist McHeadshot
Year 1080
...

Each new fortress save needs to be titled "Fate of All Worlds - <year>" (with the most current in-game year replacing "<year>".  Example: "Fate of All Worlds - 1050" or "Fate of All Worlds - 3123"
Fortresses turns may be new or reclaimed.  If new, the fortress site must have at least one edge touching a past fortress site.
Any utility like Embark Everywhere or Dfhack is allowed, so long as it doesn't break the world.  Pave the world, don't break it.  (Using "cleanall" and "lair" in DFhack before abandoning a fortress really saves FPS, for instance.)

Any adventurers who wish to use previous save games as starting points are welcome to do so - it would be interesting to see what the world was like as the dwarves relentlessly expand their reach across the lands.  Even if they don't make it into the ongoing game files, their posted adventures will be linked to the proper periods in the group and become part of the lore of this project.
