I'm trying to do a run with a colony with minimal non-native expansion (ie almost no recruitment, almost exclusively increase population by kids) and I had my first baby death. 89% birth quality and the baby came out gravely ill. Without the necessary glitterworld medicine, the baby's condition steadily deteriorated until she died.

It was surprisingly sad. I've never felt like that before with the game.

I hear mod support for console is a possibility, I also have been playing it on my Ps4 for the last few days. I've enjoyed it a whole lot, though I would love to be able to use mods like the Insectoids or the Save our Ship scenario, which seems fun trying to survive in a derelict ship but all around I'm enjoying it. I bought the bundle so I got the Royalty expansion which is pretty neat I guess.

SoS2 is presently awaiting 1.4, it should be noted. A lot of stuff broke and they don't want to make their first 1.4 release a ruined, shitty mess. You can get it off github, but there's a number of issues still. Any console release will take even longer.

Speaking of mods, I was wondering if Rimworld being as insanely popular as it is, has some uber mods or modpacks that just make it objectively better. I'm reminded of mods like Prophecy of Pendor for Mount & Blade, or all the modpacks for minecraft.

Nah, no major mods or modpacks that are unquestionably needed since most of the big stuff changes balance pretty substantially. Because of this while some people might like it, many others won't. In addition these days most of the rimworld mods just work well enough together that you don't need to go the minecraft route and download modpacks that fit everything into working well together.

That said there are a ton of tiny mods that all used together are pretty critical to improving game quality.
I would for instance wholeheartedly reccomend:
Spoiler: Some pretty minor mods (click to show/hide)

There are of course a ton more that pretty majorly affect game balance, such as a ton of Vanilla expanded stuff (eg. psycasters, security, medical), or the fortifications mods, or mods that let you just get free 200% farm yield, or stuff that fundamentally changes how combat works like combat extended (or something more minor like suppression).

O I'm not concerned about balance of vanilla, just fun. Something that mixes in its own story and will cause me to play differently.

If you want to be more welcoming, Hospitality.
If you want to be more hostile, Combat (Reloaded, Reimagined?)
If you want to be more more, Save Our Ships.

Each of those alone can be a large tweak on the entire gameplay loop to create new stories.

If you're looking for something that really is an entire overhaul of the gameplay loop and *forces* a new story, there's a Mars settlement mod that's been on and off again supported, that's 90% about just getting the resources needed insitu to survive.
It goes as far as making exposure to the air without a suit almost immediately lethal to plantlife and quickly knocking out colonists, who will then also die as well.
It's something like Mars Simulation Project meets Rimworld, with a dash of The Martian thrown in. Though, I haven't played it since the base game caravan update, so perhaps that's flip flopped?

Combat Extended is the current iteration, with CE Guns adding more weapons.

Right! CE, not CR. Too much DnD time for me and Challenge Ratings  :P

To be fair, Combat Reloaded was the original one I believe. It just got abandoned and CE is the current fork.

Honestly, I can't play without it now. The regular gunplay seems way too stale by comparison. Although honestly, I struggle to play without my ~40 mods because I played the base game to death.

Same. Both Factorio and, to a lesser degree, RimWorld.
I easily run 30+ in Factorio, but RimWorld is usually between 10 and 25. Haven't really played RimWorld in quite awhile though.

When you've got mods to handle the mods you know you have to many mods.

I have submods for submods of other mods. It's a sickness and I love it.

I'm also the guy who will spend 6 hours modding skyrim and then play for 2 hours. I sometimes think I enjoy the modding more than the game.
