World Gen Help - Low Savagery
« on: September 17, 2013, 10:25:40 pm »

I found a set of parameters that give lots of volcanos, but I'm trying to make the world more savage. I'm missing something, because no matter what I change, I can't get medium or high savagery anywhere. When I do a search for Med or High savagery on the embark screen, I don't get a single result.
Can someone with some more experience with the world gen parameters point out what I'm doing wrong?

I'm not too experienced with World-Gen outside of manipulating megabeasts/titans/etc., but

    [SAVAGERY_FREQUENCY:1:1:1:1:1:1]

    [SAVAGERY_RANGES:0:0:0]

You may want to increase the frequency and ranges.

Try giving this page a read.

No, frequency and ranges shouldn't affect savagery of the world. The relevant parameter is
    [VOLCANISM:60:100:1600:1600]
-->[SAVAGERY:80:100:200:200]
    [ELEVATION_FREQUENCY:1:1:1:1:1:1]
this, and it's already set to a ridiculously high _minimum_ of 80, which should make absolutely everything highly savage.

It could simply be the site finder breaking from wildness overload. Just scan the sites by hand - if it says 'untamed wilds', 'joyous wilds' or 'terrifying', it should be quite wild.

If the world actually is extremely non-wild, i don't know what's going on; it might be the excessive minimum savagery, combined with the requirement of 25 civs (one of which playable) messing itself up - afaik humans definitely and dwarfs probably need medium- or low-savagery locations to found a civ.

If you set the minimum savagery to something less outrageous like 20 or 40, you might have better success. And if that doesn't give enough, maybe edit the frequencies, to give more weight to the higher ranges.

I've lowered the minimum to this
[SAVAGERY:20:100:1600:1600]
and lowered the civ count to 5.  (Didn't realize that was at 25)

I've also set the frequency to this:
[SAVAGERY_FREQUENCY:1:1:1:1:2:2]

But all of that and I still can't find any embarks that not-calm.  I get no results when I search for a high savagery embark.

I'm really baffled at how I"m not getting any high savagery.  I could understand not getting much, but this is downright odd.

When I generate a world with the parameters specified (modified as per previous post) I get this:
Spoiler: Modified Params Used (click to show/hide)
What else are you searching for that could be causing the failures?
Alternately, what mods do you have installed (the above was done with LNP 0.34.11) that could be changing your results?

Well, i'm stumped. I get a decent calm-to-wild mix with the basic 0-100, and it ramps up notably when increasing the minimum to 20; setting it to 40 requires setting 'minimum *-savagery squares' to zero, because worlds will be rejected constantly otherwise. Setting minimum to 80 expectedly gave me the 'can't place playable civilisation' bugout. So my (admittedly limited) knowledge of worldgen says your options _should_ give you a decent spread of savagery, but for some odd reason, they don't.

Just speculating, but it could be that the problem doesn't lie with the worldgen parameters but rather, i dunno, changed raws or other installation options? If that was the case, i absolutely couldn't help, mods and the like are way above my ken.

Man, I knew it was going to be something stupid that I was overlooking.  The problem was that in my world_gen.txt file, I had [WORLD_GEN] indenting just like the rest of the lines.  Which apparently still generates a world, but doesn't do everything it should.

Thanks for the help that was given, I'm pretty sure without it, I'd be having trouble right now with the world due to the things that you pointed.

That's very odd, 'cos I actually didn't fix the '[World_Gen]" token indent until after generating the world in the image...

That is the only thing I change on this last world that I genned.  I'm running from the LNP and havn't added anything or changed some of the RAWs.  If it isn't that, I don't have idea what it is that I could have done differently this time.
