Another round, and another score of ones rolled. RANDOM rolls a startling amount of ones, but perhaps its that I just notice them more.
I feel I should make a reminder because this is a rather new mechanic and a new period of day is coming up. At the beginning of a new period of day, i.e., when it turns to day, dusk, night, and dawn, everyone's health will go up or down by a notch depending on if they've satisfied their 'food quotient.'
Currently, when day comes around, everyone's gonna lose a bit of health/strength/life/whatever gamey way you want to quantify "don't die juice." It doesn't take a or action to eat food considering one could really do most things while eating on-the-go stuff.
I apologize if the quality of this update isn't up to my usual snuff, gotta get back into the rhythm. If anything seems weird or isn't like it should be, tell me, it most likely isn't.
"Uhh, thanks you guys not that I couldn't totally have handled that thing myself."
Harvey remarked as he pushed off the floor and steadied himself against the fabricator. Not a worry in the world nor a doubt on any mind, really. It wasn't long before the survivor got back to work however, retrieving the revolver and speed loader from the steel table at the end of the machine and then started reloading both of his revolvers, old and new. That brought him up to six in each gun and five left over, currently stocking a single speed loader.
Randall wasn't entirely convinced in his lack-of-doubt. "W-Well, at l-least you are ok." But the situation was as it was, no use bothering over silly things like doubts or lack-there-of. There were corpses to be had and guns to be made, after all!
"W-We will search for t-the d-dead thing while you keep making guns. T-try to make one for us, if possible."
"No material left, all I had was my pay for the job. We need to find a hardware store to get more."
Well strike that then, rather there were corpses to be had and goals to be made!
"S-Seems that it will be what we do until n-noon comes." Goals made: check!
"Works for me, if we find any we can divide up between the three of us." Harvey agreed as he fiddled with the computer, plugging some cube into it.
"Shit, won't say no to a gun. Long as we don't do something stupid like shoot them at night or crap."
Wilmer and Randall started their illustrious search for corpses in the store, after all Harvey and Samuel had managed to kill one here as they told. It wasn't a particularly hard search, what with the foul smelling boxes hiding the conspicuous lumps. As to why they're covered in boxes in the first place is a mystery though.
Randall took this as an opportune time to query his foul-mouthed companion for valuable experience. "S-so, it is the first time you fight one of t-these things?"
"You don't live in this shit hole of a ship now without a go at one of these bastards some time or another. So yeah, beat the hell outta a few. Mostly by me and the other three sneaking up on one of those infected fucks and bashing their heads in before they can do anything. Those ones seem pretty lazy and stupid, don't do much until you either get their attention or mess with them. We just ran from anything bigger."
Boxes out of the way, their disgusting, macabre prize was revealed. One body was vaguely human and smelled the worst out of the two present, a blackened oozing figure with four arms and a lot of wounds. Its arms were barbed in bone and covered in small hands, each finger ending in a sharp point with raking claws.
It wasn't any mystery how Samuel got so wounded anymore.
The other body in the pile was a pale corpse of a man in a now ruined safari get-up with his throat quite obviously missing. He was covered in dried blood, now blackened, but was otherwise nondescript beyond his mechanical eyes and ears.
Randall hasn't survived on the streets by not being cautious, and gives the monstrous corpse a second opinion on its current state of being. With the oozing wounds and all, it looks pretty dead by all accounts. It isn't breathing, moving, or really anything one would qualify as 'alive,' but one can never really be sure enough. A few nudges with a box and even a swift kick proves good enough evidence, its good and dead.
As Randall and Wilmer wrap the dead monster in in the blanket, rolling it along the floor in it until it was quite secure. Well, doubt anyone will use that blanket anymore. As Randall tried lifting the corpse, managing to get it just quite above the ground by himself, Harvey strolled out of the room in the back, shutting and locking the door behind him seeing as his business there was quite done.
Before the three could do much else, their comms crackled into life and Marion's voice came on the line. A short ways into the message their maps came up and a spot pinged over in the Outskirts by Marion, indicating where the source of her warning was.
"This is Dupont here, just a friendly warning. We got a group of Free Sons here. Consider them armed and dangerous."
Freddie and Frogdo took a bit of a breather now that neither of their lives were potentially in the hands of a deranged and most likely corrupted AI, a rather strange situation by all counts. The sun was still rising in the early morning sky, being at least before six by a bit. Maybe an hour or two, perhaps.
Still though, all rests must come to an end and a plan of action must be made before long. Making the first move, Freddie consults the unassailable wisdom of Frogdo to weigh in on their options.
"Okay then... Frogdo? What do you think, do we try to find something else around here or do we return to the bunker? I think we can safely say we've pulled a decent shift, found out some info and got some loot, so we could return and get some sleep to top it all off. Or we could keep on looking - there's still a lot of daylight left, after all."
Frogdo doesn't quite see the dichotomy of the choices presented. "Eh, y'know what, I feel like chancin' it. Why don't we go look fer crap on the way back to the bunker?"
With the outline laid out, there was still the matter of the details. "Hm... but what to look for? A map, maybe? We've already got one, but maybe we could cross-reference some things."
"Aight."
A plan made and a goal in sight, the two checked their maps for a map. Most maps of the ship and its districts tend to be digital, due to being an easy medium, but there are a few physical/semi-physical maps in the city. A store aimed at tourists would almost certainly have some, for instance, although there's always the trams. The rail-run transport are mostly used for inter-district conveyance although finding one can sometimes be a pain, even when the city was alive and well.
Hm. According to the map, there's a tram station just on the other side of the street a short distance away. Looking up reveals the glimmer of the steel rails above the streets, the tracks of the transport looking to still be in rather good repair. At least here.
On the other hand, there's a tourist trap that should sell maps a few mile away. The HUD cheerily states that its only roughly two hours away on foot, although you could probably shave that down a good bit if you leg it a bit.
Seeing as one was much closer than the other, the two followed the rail to its source. It wasn't very far away, as the map showed prior, although its conditions could of certainly been more... Inspiring. The metal walkway up to the actual station couldn't really be called stairs anymore, looking as if a car had hit it. Oh sure, it still went up to the station, but it looks like if one actually wanted to enter it that would require some climbing.
A stone column stood by the ruined stairway, not looking much better. It used to hold a circular screen that would feed recent headlines and news along with the current position of the tram and a map of the district, but what was left was mostly just a stone column with a bare recess that went around it. Seems like someone took the screen, and with that the map as well.
While Freddie was considering the next course of action, Frogdo took his job as lookout with the utmost seriousness. He couldn't see anything from here! There were buildings, cars, and ruined metal once-stairs blocking sight of everything, that certainly won't do, not at all. Hopping on top of a nearby car, Frogdo tried to get a better look of the surroundings. Much better! The first discovery he made from his new vantage point was a strange sound though, sounding something like... Cracking windshield.
Ah.
With a final shattering crash, the already heavily cracked windshield caved in from the weight of Frogdo standing on it, sending the man toppling over. The survivor thudded against the car, the motion rolling him over and sending him at the ground the hard ground front first. That will most definitely hurt in the morning, and considering it's already morning, it hurts quite a bit right now.
Frogdo was able to ignore the pain a bit more easily when both his and Freddie's comms cackled to life, Marion's voice coming in over the line. Halfway into the transmission the map came to life, jumping into view and showing a dot in the Outskirts, near where Marion was.
"This is Dupont here, just a friendly warning. We got a group of Free Sons here. Consider them armed and dangerous."
Following orders, Samuel spilled his guts. Metaphorically of course, he already came closer than he's comfortable with literally doing so yesterday.
"There was this old man who was the owner of a gun shop. He heard something and then this thing came in, attacked the gunshop owner and then came after me. We hit it a lot and eventually thought we killed it, but it was only faking, so we finished it off. Beating up over a period of time seemed like the best way to take it down."
The Sergeant nodded, listening to the short account. "Hm." The man simply said, tapping his desk in thought.
"Nothing that differs much, good of news in the face of the original. The attack, owner dies, plagued individual suffers several wounds, fakes death, then is killed finally."
The enforcer looks at some of the papers on his desk, pushing one in front of him and picking up a pen.
"Very well then. Your objectives have been updated and you have a file explaining some of new rules dealing with entrances into the bunker proper at night. Your HUD should inform you of the location of the others if you wish to catch up to them, otherwise how you achieve your objectives are up to you. You're dismissed."
The Sergeant started writing on the paper, continuing with his work of administrating the bunker.
This didn't look good, not at all. Marion wanted little to nothing to do with these people, she's dealt with them enough when the ship had order, no need to go seeing how they're like now after the chaos. With a quick warning to the others, she turned around and moved to quietly go back the way she came to make a circle around.
Things... Didn't quite work out that way however. No more than a few steps out one of her feet catches a stray piece of rebar jutting out of the broken ground, sending Marion stumbling forward. Reaching out to catch something, the detective managed to catch onto an overturned trash can. While it stopped her from possibly falling, the momentum from sent the metal can screeching over the concrete sidewalk, causing an unfortunate racket.
Staying low to the ground she looks back to see if they heard. Yeah, they heard. Or at least most of them did, as one of them is just looking at the others in confusion. Two of them are looking vaguely in her direction, obviously searching for her but not quite finding her. That didn't last long unfortunately as one of them carrying a heavy pack pointed at her, and the leader of the group watching her.
The leader of the group along with the member of the group who was holding the strange axe-like weapon with wires running along its length headed in her direction, holding their weapons by their sides but not at ready. The other three tagged along at a short stone's throw away from the two. The leader held up a hand urging her to stay where she was while they approached, but they were still a good ways off. It wouldn't be long before they got to Marion though if she were to stay.
