No, that book would be depressing.
Not saying it wouldn't be successfull or interesting though.

It would be an awesome book, although not in the moral / exciting action sense. XD

Trouble is, if it got published, I bet the editor would fanangle in some unnecessary positive ending like "It was all a simulation" or "But they were saved by aliens."

Nah, that mostly happens with movies. There's TONS of books where everything goes horribly wrong, and stays wrong.

I'm surprised that there hasn't been any Ron Paul campaign posters yet. It would be a great platform to run on.

Unstoppable forces of nature tend to be outside the scope of politics. We are yet to see a sim-city world where political parties channel the raw power of the elements to achieve democratic victory.

On a side note, there's a couple of reasons why a Yellowstone eruption wouldn't be that bad.

-The hotspot moved over a thicker layer of rock, which would significantly reduce the scale of the eruption. Thing IV-5* instead of IV-8.
-Volcanoes are naturally hard to predict. I mean, scientists detonated several tons on the flanks of the Vesuvius** a few decades ago.
-Humanity is notoriously hard to kill.

On the positive side, if it does erupt:
-All apocalypse predictors were right. A margin of 10 000 years is extremely accurate for volcanic eruptions
-Global Warming solved, for the next 1-3 years.

*Mount Saint Helens, rather than the Apocalypse
**Which AFAIK, might also erupt soonish, wiping Napels of the map.

On a side note, here are some tips about volcanic ash, some of which have already been stated.

-Fertile when less than 5-20 cm, kills everything when more
-Turns your lungs to concrete
-Is extremely heavy. More than 20 centimeters is enough to collapse most houses.
-Is black, unlike normal snow.

Vog is nasty in Honolulu when the winds shift. It makes even the leeward size miserably humid.

We can have our limbs cut off and keep chugging like almost nothing happened.

Up until the adrenaline wears off or we lose too much blood. After that it goes to shit. Still, gives you enough time to either get to safety or fuck up whatever fucked YOU up.

We're also highly adaptable.

There's a lot of stuff that helps humans survive.
You're sadly lacking in redundant organs, but you make do.
Also PTW for inevitable extinction event. Maybe I can harness it for something.

*insufferable optimisim engaged

Why all the depression over the ticking mass extinction timebomb? Look on the bright side! It will solve overpopulation, word hunger, war, global warming, and a whole host of other things when humans go extinct or thrown into the stone age again! Think about it! the survivors have a clean slate to start all over again, and there are zero issues with favoritism or politics involved in the nature of the solution! That makes it ideal!

On a side note, have another volcanic timebombs.

Cumbre Veija volcano, Canarian Islands. About half a mountain waiting to drop into the sea, devastating the shores of Africa, Europe and the US.

There're quite a few of these around, but I can't find a clear list.
