Dwarven Fighting "Tactics"
« on: October 01, 2013, 06:43:51 am »

I noticed my military dwarves tend to develop a distinct style for each fight. Some of it was the typical 'lop off limbs with an axe' but my swordsdwarf found his own effective style: bite a limb and while holding on, start stabbing.

So, what interesting moments have you guys had with your combat-minded dwarves.

P.S. Giant jumping spiders are mean.

Giant jumping spiders are meaner if you give them LARGE_PREDATOR.

Which I do.

On topic, once I had a macedwarf who would beat her enemies into submission and then bite one of their thumbs off. Not particularly effective for actually dispatching the enemy, but it was a neat signature move.

My militia commander, an axedwarf, loves to chop off FBs' heads from behind. He does it with astonishing consistency.

One Dwarf always strikes the heart of megabeasts, first strike every time. Odyssean tier hunter.
Another Dwarf breaks the ribs and lungs of enemies with a morningstar before tearing into their throats... With her teeth. Still don't get that one. She has a dagger.

Just put it into the GIANT variation. And animal man if you're feeling masochistic.

Biting an opponent even though theyre wielding a shield and warhammer

That's actually a perfectly valid move when looking at game mechanics. Every bite which connects (isn't deflected by armour) will 'hold' the target, preventing it from dodging out of the way of hammerstrikes. And successful wrestling moves while latched on will open bleeding wounds, a valuable supplement to blunt hammer damage.

I had a whole squad of hammer dwarves that insisted on mashing the lower body of every enemy into a bloody pulp.  Literally, there would often be five strikes to the lower body (tearing the guts!) before they hit any other part.  So much vomit.  It was funny, though, watching elf siegers run away, trailing vomit and blood all over the map.

My militia commander and her bff/right-hand axelord (they're each others' only friends, since they've spent most of their time sparring together since month 2 of the fort. Aww.) both like to start fights by kicking the opponent, hard enough to shatter bones, and then punching them in the face. If that's not enough to take them out due to a shattered skull, they'll just start hacking off limbs (often working their way up a limb a bit at a time---hands, then lower arms, then upper arms) with their axes (or biting them, then shaking them around in their teeth until they come off) until the foe is incapacitated. They are not averse to kicking while an opponent is down.

By the time the rest of the squad catches up to them, generally the battlefield will be either strewn with nearly-undamaged dead bodies (if the punch or kick kills them), or a bloody mess of limbs that takes the haulers ages to dump, and both of them are covered in blood from beard to sock. I imagine the rest of the military is afraid of them.

My military (even though they have steel weapons) just mass bash the shit out of everything. Like, they could just behead the enemy, not these guys, they literally kick and punch and occasionally slash until they've broken every bone in the body until it bleeds out a slow painful painful death

My champion loves to do this:

  • `CAPTAIN' Timn„rmafol Sanusigest has become a champion.
  • The champion hacks The Minotaur in the right foot with her Estungukil Suvasshan and the severed part sails off in an arc!
  • The Minotaur falls over.
  • The champion hacks The Minotaur in the left hand with her Estungukil Suvasshan and the severed part sails off in an arc!
  • The champion hacks The Minotaur in the right hand with her Estungukil Suvasshan and the severed part sails off in an arc!
  • The champion hacks The Minotaur in the right lower leg with her Estungukil Suvasshan and the severed part sails off in an arc!
  • The champion hacks The Minotaur in the right upper leg with her Estungukil Suvasshan and the severed part sails off in an arc!
  • `CAPTAIN' Timn„rmafol Sanusigest, champion cancels Sleep: Interrupted by Minotaur.
  • The champion hacks The Minotaur in the left upper arm with her Estungukil Suvasshan and the severed part sails off in an arc!
  • The Minotaur has become enraged!
  • The champion hacks The Minotaur in the left foot with her Estungukil Suvasshan and the severed part sails off in an arc!
  • The champion hacks The Minotaur in the head with her Estungukil Suvasshan, tearing apart the muscle, shattering the skull and  tearing apart the brain!
  • An artery has been opened by the attack!
  • A tendon in the skull has been torn!
  • The Minotaur has been knocked unconscious!

Fairly typical combat log for her, my beautiful one armed champion. She is a bit senile and falls asleep a lot but she always gets the job done.
