kitten rot
« on: November 09, 2013, 09:32:13 pm »

literally. two of my cats are rotting and i don't know what caused it. i checked their inventory screen and there no sign of extract. my guess is that they mauled each other in world with no animal healthcare.

EDIT: THREE cats now. WTF is going on?

2nd EDIT: and a GCS. guess it's no longer kitten rot. still, WTF is going on? why are only these animals contracting rot? also i check the combat reports and there hasn't been a sign fighting between these animals.

You say there's no sign of any extract on them, but have you had a megabeast attack?  They could have washed extract or something off after it took effect.  Barring that, are you in an evil biome that rains anything other than water?

i've had megabeast attacks before, and i noticed some frozen extract in my dwarven bathtub. but that still doesn't explain why none of my dwarves are rotting.

untamed wilds, so no evil rain or clouds

I've managed to solve the problem by butchering these animals, but i still don't have an explanation. the extract is only in one tile, so it should have been washed off in the bathtub.

I think it's just infection. Creature get injured, vets don't exist. Creature get infected, creature rot.

I think that's what infection does.

Cool, but wouldn't this likely lead to tongues having a '[SPEACH]' tag, and thus via necromancy we would have nearly unkillable reanimated tongues following necromancers spamming 'it is sad but not unexpected'?

I believe it's because dwarves wear shoes, and cats don't. They should be okay if they go on wearing them.

There's a tag for that in the raws, but I've never seen it actually happen.  I don't know if it works or not.

This is quite possibly the explanation.  Back in in the early .34 and .31 releases it was common for trains of dwarves to die to megabeast extracts because they'd walk on the contaminants and contract a fatal sydrome.  Shoes would protect against that, but in those versions dwarves wouldn't pick up new clothes.

I'm certain I saw it. Of course, experiment wasn't pure, but there were injured, infected livestock, walking around and producing miasma.

so far, all of my free range animals have rot on them. i think you guys are right. I'm gonna start mass producing shoes now. i think this extract also has a delayed reaction since I've only seen rot in my meeting halls.

I think I'm going to make a miasma generator for my prisoners, but i have another problem. rotting causes blood loss. is there anything in the game that can rot permanently? (besides zombies since I do not have access to it)
