What should we work on next?

A tower to the sky!
A ridiculously complex trapped entrance!
A ginormous constructed somethingorother!
A monstrous terraforming project!
An ostentatious display of golden wealth!
A giant building in the shape of a Toad, in honour of ToadyOne!
Candy everything!
Exclamation point! (My idea will be posted below)

You can train non-fort creatures in danger rooms, as long as they have CAN_LEARN. Obvious candidates are goblins and caravan guards (caravan guards don't go insane when kept from leaving) - they shouldn't be in much danger of impalement, thanks to their equipment. Making use of them in your defences would be non-trivial but very appropriate.

My plan exactly. It'll give us SOME defense against FBs. I might need to catch some more goblins, as the ones we have right now have had their equipment stripped from them. It might still be fun to impale them though. Taking caravan guards might be a little bit harder, but I've run across a thread for capturing them somewhere.

EDIT:
I appointed him mayor, kicked the previous incumbent out and gave the managers previous quarters to the hammerer.
I just realized I WAS the previous incumbent before I gave the mayor-ship to the manager.

And you claimed the king? Now, that is something you don't see everyday^^
I was pointing out my stance on regicide. Plus, my turn so far has basically been me ordering things to be done and not doing anything about it. That sounds like your average DF noble.

Well, this significantly raises the threshold for regicide justification. I approve. In the absence of noble inheritance, monarchs should be considered special and not thrown away for laughs. (I think it was Headshoots where they just couldn't be bothered to assign their queen any rooms at all, which drove her berserk within the year; not exactly one of the high points of that fort.)

What are the preferences? Really annoying stuff might still encourage _someone_ to cook up an IC justification to cut down on noble maintenance.

I just dwarfed you as the legendary metalcrafter in the kings entourage. He must have been one of the "pacified" soldiers he comes with, because he's a legendary marksdwarf too.

Tin glaze, gold, wax opal, spears, mail shirts, bins, animal traps and ducks. He also has 14 children.  :o

I think there is some revolt potential if he orders an army-amount of spears but the rest should be fine.  At least for my turns, I really like to roleplay strict anti-militarism.
However, how is my dwarf doing in the meantime?

Spears are not a problem, one can always justify it by saying it's for traps and other contraptions of that type, I am referring to chess pattern of metal spears connected to a lever that may supplement the dwarven atom-smashing entrance, it should not impede our abilities to receive wagons in caravans either, unlike normal weapon traps.... I guess that's my project for next turn^^ Also if Peregarrett wants to go before me it is fine^^

And thanks for the dwarfing, Arcvasti^^

Your dwarf is fine. He's ecstatic and doesn't have any skills above novice(Besides axedwarf). Update incoming very soon.

19th moonstone: My mandate for spears has still gone unfulfilled. The legendary weaponsmith, 4maskwolf refuses to make spears. Apparantly, making spears is against the constitution of this mountainhome. I'm not inclined to press the issue, not wanting to overly disrespect the values of my new refuge. I asked if he could make them and then melt them down again. He said that that would be art defacement. I went and told shadowhammer to go make some spears and then melt them down. Thats fine apparantly. What does a dwarf have to do to get some spears around here? I also told the new mayor that my training spears and furniture were of the highest priority and that the stockpiles records could wait.

20th moonstone: Today was a good day. Some obsessed dwarven kid just finished making an artifact. A blind cave ogre bone amulet to be precise. Its called Lolumfath "The wooden sacks". It is worth 72000 sovereigns.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The engravers have finished engraving my throne room and excavation on my dining room proceeds apace. The cavern creature area is ready to be populated and I have sent orders for others to do so.

21st moonstone:
My mandate for spears has been fulfilled at last. This has caused me to feel an alarming amount of satisfaction. Apparently, someone had set some of our valuable steel blades to be melted. I rescinded that order. We caught an opposum. Its a start at least. I've set our potter(s?) to making stoneware pots.

22nd moonstone: The potter churned out 10-14 stoneware pots between yesterday and today. I'm going to need to stockpile more clay next time I set him to work. My dining room is fully excavated and I've sent the engravers to go smooth it. I've got the miners digging out my bedroom now. The peasants were storing animal traps in the animal training area, so I've ordered those dumped into the volcano. Also, a magma crab is sniping a bird.

(OOC: My dwarfs been king since year 1? I hope he doesn't die of old age. Also FPS is pretty slow. And the potter is really skilled. I don't know who the potter is. There are too many dwarves for me to sort into professions or care about. Also, my very own artifact)

I do hope you don't go asking for mail shirts too much - they'll be completely useless without a military, except perhaps as an export good (haha - that's what export bans are for). Non-masterwork ones can be melted down, but that'll still lose a bit of metal. Spears are definitely useful - mainly for "upright weapon"s, a very powerful defence tool that can also be used for goblin training and as happy-thought-generator for just about every dwarf, but especially the king.

Players might get confused when trying to trade while a bin export ban is up. Pro tip: typing "m" in the "bring stuff to depot" screen lets you view and select items prohibited by mandate. Just remember not to sell the bins themselves, or Arcvasti the first and last will be sad.

*Knock knock*

Arcvasti, Your majesty, are you alright? You've been brooding for days now, the population hopes you won't get a fell mood and mandate the production of dwarf bone spears.

Still here. Been dealing with some homework and RL stuff. I'll probably have the season done by wednesday.

EDIT: I'm not sure I'll be able to do a whole year. FPS is pretty low. I'll put the save up at the end of the week, whether or not I'm done the year.

O.k., it's been two weeks. I can understand that you couldn't put in too much time, what with the ☼Cathedral☼ turn and non-DF business, but i'd like to get this thing moving again.

Arcvasti's turn is over, please upload a save. Date doesn't matter, the fort should only be alive, and if something awful's going on, it'd be a good idea to mention it with the upload. I'd be quite thankful for some kind of account of events during your turn, so i can put something up in the "The story so far" post. Thanks in advance!

Peregarrett's the next overseer and can start as soon as we have a save to work with.

PS in response to response ;) - good to hear you're on it. The FPS thing, not so much. I'll take a look into the save, try to see how it works on my computer, which is pretty low-end but a desktop. 9FPS would be quite a bit too low for sustained playing.

OK,I'll upload the save soon. I'll have it up by monday. I might do one last update and try to finish the month before I end my turn. The FPS is absolutely awful.

23rd moonstone: I ordered a bunch of random vermin and a troll dumped down the death shaft.

24th moonstone: Larix was reloading one of the cavern cage traps when he was interupted by a group of crundles. He ran away from the cage traps and is now stranded in the caverns. I have ordered a bunny deployed behind the cage traps to draw the crundles in.

25th moonstone: Larix was assaulted by one of the crundles, but his trusty cat leather cloaks warded off the worst of the attacks.

26th moonstone: More disturbances at the cavern cage traps. Saegge, described as a "Random Dude" was also attacked by crundles whilst reloading the traps. He bit the crundles claw off in a passive-aggressive manner.

27th moonstone: The troll was executed. Both Larix and Saegge managed to get to safety without further injury.

28th moonstone: I've heard some of the peasants mumbling about oppressive mandates. I've given thought to appointing a overseer to deflect some of the blame.

29th moonstone: I've finally designated that the crundles we captured be trained. The manager has finally gotten around to giving the orders for the training spears and my furniture.

1st Opal: I see no further reason to directly manage this fortress. The plans I was working on must need be implemented by the overseer I appoint. My tomb remains woefully unfinished, but my throne room is done, my dining room is almost entirely smooth and my bedroom almost entirely dug out. I will step back a little and let the creativity of the dwarven spirit flow whilst I look on from my throne and look awesome.

OOC:Despite the average 9 FPS, that was fun. I might consider taking another turn when I have access to a fasted computer and more time on my hands. I've placed a few instructive notes about my projects around the fort for the next overseer. Everything is pretty stable. The worst thing that hapened in my turn was the crundle attack on Larix and Saegge.
