I just had a shocking revelation about the nature of fortresses.
« on: November 25, 2013, 02:17:01 am »

The fortresses are penal colonies.

The mountainhome has far too many degenerates too deal with by itself, so it sends out minor nobles to establish penal colonies across the world.
Condemned dwarves are escorted to a certain point in the wilderness, given directions to the fortress, and left to themselves; if they don't make it, the wilderness will surely claim their lives.

The number of convicts arriving varies based on how much wealth you export; the mountainhome expects the penal colonies to provide them with industry, and thus sends the most convicts to the most successful ones.
Presumably, the mountainhome regent simply accepts that the prisoners are being justice'd based on the liason's reports.

For all that a fortress is, it would certainly explain the position the dwarves who go there are in. Also it would explain the mountainhome's indifference towards the fate of a single fortress.

I am now going to make a fortress where dwarven living facilities are purposely prison-like.

That is awesome! I would sig all this, but it's too long :(

Well, it certainly is very nice for the king/queen to come over to my penal colonies with their honour guard and stay there for the rest of their lives.

They even make these penal colonies of degenerate criminals the mountainhomes and refer to it as a metropolis! Wow!

It's the occasional revolutionary that pos up that the real nobles send off to the penal colonies to do as they please so they won't overthrow the government, obviously :P

The King/Queen coming to the fortress is actually exiled from the Mountainhome after a revolution.

Dwarven goverment doesen't have much supporters. I't based on sending all politically active and change-seeking dwarves (political prisoners) among with real, violent problem dwarves to penal colonies. One day the revolution begins and the monarch is overthrown. He/she will be exiled to penal colonies.

I was actually planning to run a fort like this. The starting seven would be composed of builders and a cook, then the next generation waves would be divided into one of three classes depending on their situation: Anyone with kids with them would be Free class, they make the important crafts to maintain the penal colony (such as armour and weapons) that you can't entrust the inmates. They live separate and have strong defenses and everything they need. Then those with military skills are Guard class, they exist to mob dwarves that have gone berserk and to take care of invaders. Then the prison class, which is the largest, they live in poor conditions: rarely see a doctor, eat the same cheap food and booze, sleep in small dormitories, they produce the raw materials and the stuff that isn't essential for the guards. The prisoners live underground, of course, and while they're mostly safe they get no additional protection whenever they need to venture into the caverns or above ground, aside walls to protect the more important crops they work on. This whole thing obviously requires some planning, followed by a lot of trial and error. Maybe add some kind of "distraction" for taking care of tantrum spiralling inmates, like a crippled bronze colossus that falls from above to break stuff up. And maybe collect FB's with syndromes to administer different kinds of punishment.

I live in Australia and I honestly can't see what all the fuss is about, it's not that bad, guys, sure we have incredibly poisonous creatures that could kill you at every turn, but those things would be happy if you wouldn't be a dick and encroach on their territory and I'm not sure what you are talking about with the 'prisoners', sure our history about us were a large group of inmates because England was overflowing with them and beating up and killing all the natives, but that situation isn't much diffrent from when other islands got colonised, you can bearly call this place a 'prison' anymore than any other place anyway, the main things you have to look out for is massive heat changes and something else I can't remember.

Thank you for defending our home, ED-E. The fact that you said all of that in one sentence is impressive!

Here in Spain I've met several people who honestly believe that Australia is a deathtrap and everyone is Steve Irwin. And by that I mean everyone I've met who can a) speak English and b) is not already from Australia.

I get tired of explaining that no I don't keep saltwater crocodiles as my pet, no the Huntsman spider is harmless and no Hugh Jackman isn't my neighbour. I mean he lives close by, but not right next door.

What's wrong with using magma? That's almost always the easiest method.
I have issues channeling it properly to do that method. I end up flooding the fortress with magma.

Fortresses aren't built to keep invaders out. THEY'RE BUILT TO KEEP DWARVES IN.
Does that mean the goblins are actually hired mercenaries meant to patrol outside the fortress and keep the inmates from escaping? It would also explain why they are trying to get the children away from their criminal parents...

Actually, this is how my first for that I wrote a story for started. It was the overseer and six prisoners who opted for 'colonization duty' rather than complete their sentences - most of which were life in the crapmines.

It really fit the theme of the game well, I thought.

Here's the post on my blog with the bios, good example of how I was thinking at the time:
