A Dance with Ice and Fire
« on: November 27, 2013, 09:40:28 pm »

Here's something that I've been working on for less than a month. A roguelike set in the world of 'A Song of Ice and Fire' by George R.R. Martin (aka Game of Thrones). It's still in very early development but it's getting there.

Features: (so far)
* Virtually infinite 3 dimensional map with on-demand map generation.
* Multi-threaded.
* EVERYTHING is in defined by JSON files, modders are going to freak out.
* UTF-8 curses rendering, any unicode character is usable by the engine. (Anything your terminal can handle that is, toggleable setting)
* Javascript for entity/item scripting. (WIP, still have to add PC/NPCs and actual items, but the groundwork is there)

So this is basically similar to adventure mode with more umph planned.

I'm currently working on terrain generation.

Oh, and before I forget, here are some screenshots: (Most recent first)

Proof of concept terrain generation (chasms):

3D layered rendering, with the new libtcod renderer:

Main menu and character creation (this will be changed soon)

Terrain generation

Bicubic interpolation for terrain height:

Biome clustering:

SVG output of clustering:

I'll post more later.

Another amazing looking game. I hope the project gets far enough along to attract some of the great modders around here. Going to be keeping a close eye on this, it seems pretty ambitious. May your fingers never tire, may your coffee machine never run out of beans.

Thanks to both of you!

Every time I get stuck and think I'll just quit I somehow pull through, I hope the trend continues because I'm really enjoying the challenge.

And I hope modders like it enough to participate. I'm adding every element I liked in every roguelike I played so far. The freedom and detail of DF combat, the challenge of Cataclysm, the wilderness life from Unreal World, and a touch of ADOM. So yeah, it's quite ambitious and will need lots of content, starting with a decent map.

No pressure though, it's all modular and the development is incremental, so that stuff can (and hopefully will) come in later as the project becomes more functional (and more interesting).

Wow, man, this is already looking downright brilliant.
And from what you said there, it's just gonna get more and more brilliant.
So, yeah. PTW.

I find sharing progress with people is a fantastic motivator whenever I get stuck or bored of a project, so I'm very glad you decided to post some screenshots and info here for us. :) It's already looking great! I'm eager to see more!

Thanks for your support guys! It's really appreciated!

Thanks! and I agree, I already share my coding progress daily on a programming forum I frequent and the support I get is invaluable. It really helps when you share your code with other programmers since they can point out things you missed. Sharing it with you guys is something I've been putting off for a while, the project is far too young; but I decided to post about it to see if anyone is interested. We all share a definite mindset when it comes to games since we frequent this forum and (most of us) play roguelikes other than DF, so any input is much appreciated.

If anyone has any suggestion or ideas please don't hesitate to tell! (Except for "Lordship Mode", not yet anyway 8))

TAKE MY FUCKING MONEY YOU DAMN BASTARD.

Now now.. it's free and open-source!

JK, I don't even know anything about A Song of Ice and Fire, but this looks great. Keep up the good work!

So (and I apologize ahead of time in case I'm being stupid/blind) is there something we can play here?

Perhaps someone can mod in a dancing skill  :D (Or at least the Ironborn Fingerdance)

Love the vibe so far! Do you have a roadmap of what you want to see in game eventually? Interested to see the scale you're aiming for. Can we expect to see the large-scale politics that the series is known for?

So how moddable are we talking? Could a modder implement something like DCSS' tiles?
