Agreed.  My favorite rendering software just released a major overhaul.  I may make an artifact in order to play around with it

Today, I stumbled across the old Your Coolest-Looking Artifacts thread, dating back to 2011. I just thought I'd mention it as it does have some cool-looking images. The OP, by acetech09, has at least three very cool 3D rendered images of artifacts.

It's just too bad that some of the thread's image links are broken because the image host deleted them. (Moral of the story? If you use an image host that regularly deletes old stuff, such as TinyPic, then don't be surprised if your images disappear some months down the road. Myself, I use PhotoBucket and I've never had an image deleted on me.)
