I haven't played DF in a while, and decided to try getting into it again.

So, I went to the site...

But I noticed that the date on the update is nearly a year and a half old.

Did they just forget to change that, or is there a more recent update I don't know about?

That IS the most recent update. Its been on a development hiatus since, which is nearing its end and a new release soon.

Toady tends to follow a semi rigid pattern with the DF updates. There tends to be a big one indroducing big new gameplay elements once every 2 years or so, followed by a flurry of bugfix updates over the next few months.

Rinse and repeat.

I guess I didn't stay long enough to notice how often updates were given xD.

To be honest, I guess I must've joined shortly after an update - that combined with the consistent blog must've given me a different impression of update speed XD.

Yeah, he's working on the game pretty much every day but he only releases versions about every year or two. Although after a major release there are usually bugfix versions that get released every few weeks or months until the major game-breaking bugs are worked out. Then he goes back into long-release cycle.

Basically the game is at a point where most changes have a big ripple effect in the codebase, so a lot of relatively minor stuff will end up taking several days or even weeks to implement. Since Toady doesn't really want to put out biweekly updates with like, three changes, we get updates roughly once a year or so.

Oh yes. He updates quite frequently. Daily. But doesn't release until he's satisfied. Releases are usually massive in scale change.

Not always. For a while there it was more like once a week, and it hasn't been daily this week either, although that's probably due to Christmas.

Minor things do get added in the little releases, but by and large it's old-and-new bug fixing time. A good indicator is the 34.XX release number. Each increment of that XX was a separate little version. He has released 4 different major releases, each of which change the first two numbers. So maybe we'll have something like version 45.00 or something.
