I am NewComer
I don't know about the military.
My fortress is have(90-Dwarf but 20=Child)
NO Military.
Ranger and Hunter Save my fortress many times.
So, I am not down during about 6-7 Goblin Wave.
I don't know...How to Train .???????

there are some tutorials on youtube.
I recently watched SilverDragonLord's and it was pretty good.
