Number of wild colonies on the map?

My current map is 3x3 and has 16 colonies. I haven't collected any wild hives for a while, so this should be near or at the maximum number. The colonies are all pretty spread out. The map itself has two tombs, but otherwise there aren't many places a colony couldn't be placed.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Only in dwarf fortress would someone end up flooding the world with magma so that they could perform bee keeping more effectively :)

Just a heads up on flooring over the entire embark: there is a longstanding bug in which any vermin colony, including hives can also spawn over water.

This only occurs in biomes that freeze in winter - the bug is caused by the ice.

I figured out a way! It requires a vampire, but just lock him on a roof or something with all the hives (you might want to fortify it so he isn't shot or something).  Set up a way to dump jugs onto it, and a way for him to dump the products off automatically - minecarts work well for this.  As long as there's no route for him to get off, he'll never leave.  Once he's good enough, he won't really need to do it all the time, so giving him an office and making him the bookkeeper works well too.

This sounds like a good plan, but something tells me he will find a way to kill himself with a minecart. They always do, lazy bastards...

If he decides that he wants a wild one though, he'll sit there forever generating error spam.

Same fix as always - find the hive which requests the wrong colony, switch the install "c"olony setting off, let run for a few seconds, switch it back on. This completely re-generates the installation job and thus reliably fixes hive installation problems, _if_ there's an available colony present.

I never have trouble with wild hive requests, beekeepers who try to replenish a harvested or newly-built hive always take the nearest colony. They'll collect wild colonies while you're still building your beekeeping industry, but once it's running (>10 hives, a few of them splittable at any time), they just replenish from built hives.

I haven't seen him sitting there doing nothing, and he's definitely gaining xp.  Maybe that's just because I haven't checked...

Good to know.  I may end up giving beekeeping a serious go at some point.  I wonder how many dwarves can be supported on Mead alone...

Foolprooof way to penetrate aquifers of unlimited depth.  (Make sure to import at least 10 stones for mechanisms)
Toughen Dwarves by dropping stuff on them.  (Nothing too heavy though, and make sure to wear armor.)
