Trader of Favors (SG)
« on: January 19, 2014, 12:29:54 am »

The first thing to understanding the way things really are is to understand that everything is tangible, even the intangible. Ideas arn't just something that sit in your head, they are real, and they have power. There are things out there that want what's right there in the mind. Some arn't so bad, Gods want your worship but take care of you in turn. Fey will try to give you joy so that they may feed off of it. Spirits will gaurd you if only you keep them around by acknowledging them. However, some of the things out there arn't so fair minded. They'll make a deal with you, and at first it will seem you're getting something out of the bargain, but then they'll ruin you and feed on your suffering. These are the creatures we should really fear, and hope that they will be content with out fear.
-Excerpt from "On the Multiverse: Recollections of a traveller."

You are a demon of the first hell, the crossroad from hell that reaches into the rest of the cosmos, and the entrance of the dead. You're a vassal to the minor lord of an infernal fiefdom, with properties and servants of your own, something not one in a million demons can claim. However your ambition for power reached too far too quickly, and now your lord has called for your execution. Fortunately you had prepared for such a possibility.
You are -or were- a pact-demon of the highest rank, only a step away from negotiations to be turned into a demon of greater power and influence. You have the power to make magically binding deals with mortals, and the debt from those deals in itself is a form of power that you carry within yourself. You can transfer it and use it as currency, or use it to alter the very nature of things, not least of all the indebted. You had amassed a great collection of this power, more so than one of your stature had any right to collect, and you used every ounce of it to trade, bribe and persuade, all to the end of keeping you from utter annihilation. You secured a trial with the judicial system of hell, rather than one presided over by the very lord who would destroy you, and were found guilty.
Your guilt was not in question, but your punishment was. You narrowly avoided being sentenced to death or slavery, and were instead granted a rather unconventional punishent, your status as a citizen of hell revoked.

You are still a demon, but your memory, power and properties are all to be taken from you. You are to be sent to a mortal plane without recollection of the politics of Hell, without any of the power you have ever gained, little more than a husk of soul-stuff. You don't plan on allowing this to be the final word however. Though it defies infernal law you expend all of the debt you have collected to arrange for some of your memories to be protected, for some small tokens to be reclaimed for you, and for a little power to be provided to you once you touch down in the mortal realm.
It is time for the final arrangements to be made, your debt to be spent.

You have 250 "debt points" to spend upon character creation. Leftover debt will be confiscated by your former liege-lord, as will be the property that you do not arrange to be taken. It's worth noting that these prices are greatly inflated by illegality.

Backstory, memories, and skills retained.

Is this a suggestion game or a multiple protagonist game?

First case (suggestion): PTW

Each player gets their own character:

this is a suggestion game, that's what the (SG) in the title stands for. It's going to be primarily story driven, but if it interests you there are going to be dwarf fortress elements to the mortal plane you are being taken to.

Some brief exposition and clarification.
The universe this suggestion games take place in draws from a number of sources. The cosmology draws strongly from such fantasy universes as planescape, though magic and divinity are quite different. The mortal realm which will be one of the primary settings will draw quite heavily from dwarf fortress ecology, including (and potentially even especially) from night creatures. I am going to put my own spin on all of these things however.

Mechanics will be d20 centered, and the advancement of the main character will be effected by the powers of pactbinding and the tangible power that the character has to metaphysically hoard favors and use them for real world effect. These effects are not specific in nature, they can be used to effect about anything, though more complicated effects have a chance of failing and expending the favor uselessly.

There's a tie of sorts, currently, between Demons Strength and the spellbook. Demons strength will round out the total to a cool 250 points, while the spellbook will allow for one of the smaller items that've only been voted for once to be picked. Mortal Husk for example would again round out the total.

Demons strength is probably going to be useful given the setting. No one ripping out our innards easily and we aren't going to look like a pansy ass elf.

You have 250 "debt points" to spend upon character creation. Leftover debt will be confiscated by your former liege-lord, as will be the property that you do not arrange to be taken. It's worth noting that these prices are greatly inflated by illegality.

-Walker Among Worlds: You have had to master the extremely subtle art of journeying through worlds, of which there are two methods. The first is to have the power to tear asunder the folds between planes and walk from one to another. You have not ever possessed this gift. The other is to find the cracks and seems between worlds, to find the key which opens them, and to quite simply slip from one to another. Unfortunatly it is much more difficult to see what is on the other side of such a seam in reality. It's an art form really, and a deeply useful skill to have, though dangerous to use. 150 point debt cost.

-The name of your liege: You have elected, quite simply, to know the name and appearance of your liege-lord. This is a thing you must never forget. 5 point debt cost

Your body

-A demon's eyes: The eyes of a true demon are very difficult to fool. They pierce illusions and are granted conventional sight beyond that of a mortal. 40

-Your Sword: In your possession you have a fine Hell-Forged sword perfect for fighting angels and the like, though you shudder at the thought. It cuts as a razor does but will not dull within a dozen lifetimes. Except for it's dark color and fine craftsmanship it looks quite unremarkable, though is warm to the touch. 15 debt point cost.

-Fine Clothes: You are to be brought to the moral plane naked, while you have no shame of your unholy body it may make mortals uneasy to find you unclothed. 5 Debt Points.

-Spellbook: Previously only a curiosity this is a book of mortal arcane magic. It does not have the ease or cruel glee of the dark arts, but it could be useful nontheless. 30 Debt Points.

-Bag: Though it is beyond extortionate your allies are asking for debt to be paid even to provide you with a common container. This particular satchel is of fine craftsmanship, with a variety of different sorts of pouches and pockets, but is in large part unremarkable. 5 Debt Points.

Wings. Very subtle GWG.

Also magic is boring. If I remember correctly magic is a game breaker normally. I don't want a gamebreaker on my character.
