Stairs into a pit: At wits end.
« on: January 19, 2014, 09:11:22 pm »

So I have an adamantine vein and I had a miner in there. Somehow (I cant remember) the miner gets stuck in there and we cant build another staircase in so he dies of dehydration. Many years after we still cant get into that fuggin vein. I can access the floor 1 z leveL above the room, I can build up/down or down stairways above the pit, I can run about the upper walkways as much as I want but whenever I try to build a stairway INTO the pit, as in build an up/down stair below an existing one in an attempt to access the disgusting abundance of candy within I get "cannot find path". When I look at the list of resources I can use to build it the game acknowledges that I have access to all the regular stuff but when it comes to actually using it everybody thinks they need to be actually IN the pit in order to build into it. I have started building stairs down into my other adam vein and its going swimmingly.

So what is going on? Why do the dwarves refuse to build down? I have tried down stairs, up/down stairs ramps ect but they refuse it all! I wanna steal all the juicy adam down there and its right at my fingertips! If only...
Also can you have 2 separate clown rushes from busting 2 different veins or is it 1 per area? We barely survived the first time I don't think we could stand a second helping.

You are likely choosing a material that is in there with the miner?  I don't know.  You could have just momentarily enabled raw adamantine for building when the miner was trapped and saved yourself the trouble.

Couldn't you channel a tile down to that z level (which would cause a ramp)?

You expect them to hang by their toes over a pit and build a staircase?

You're better off tunneling in I think.

And if you cannot tunnel around, you could perhaps channel one tile and have at least one block of building material drop down. This might happen when channeling but if no rock is produced you have to dump some down via a garbage pit. Then you have to somehow drop a mason as well, e.g. by cave in or better by building a retracting bridge above the hole and station a mason on it. Aaid mason can build upstairs. Don't forget corresponding downstairs.
Maybe this could work, I don't know...

When in doubt, enable mason labour to the dwarf in question and he will build his way out of the pit on his own.

The main problem is I unwittingly mined out everything that could be carved into a ramp and while I do see now that I should have made the miner a mason and got him to build a way out that is no longer an option on account of he is dead, I thought the others would build a way down to him before he died and when that turned out to be somehow impossible he was already lying on the floor dying of dehydration,

Its a really awkward situation because we can't dig either way without letting magma in and dropping landscape INTO the room just to have something to channel out is awkward because I would need to trash my stairs and stuff. ill do it anyway but its messy. Alternatively im thinking of dropping somebody in, turning them into a mason/architect and getting them to build their way out. Why this is all necessary I have no idea I mean we are building up/down stairs downwards in other places just fine. I think its an AI glitch where they think they need to be in the pit to build into it which is demonstrably not the case elsewhere.

Also seriously though do clowns come out if I dig into this one? I killed the others, can there be another swarm?

Nope; only 1 swarm per fortress, even if you break into another spire.

As mentioned in the previous turn, the most exciting field of battle this year will be in the Arstotzkan capitol, with plenty of close-quarter fighting and siege warfare.  Arstotzka, accordingly, spent their design phase developing a high-altitude tactical bomber.

Try forbidding every bit of stone on the level you can't access, then order an upstair constructed. I think your problem is ordering the stair to be constructed with a specific piece of material that is inaccessible to anyone who isn't on that level already.

What would it be like to live in a world that was copy/pasted? Would we even notice? If not, how many times have we switched celestial harddrives or whatever?

If you have temperature disabled, dwarves will behave oddly around any tiles that previously contained magma. If that is the case, try enabling temperature temporarily to allow the tile attributes to clear.

Do you have a downstair above the upstair-to-be-constructed? With constructions, unlike digging, you need to construct them separately and in order.

Alternatively, cast obsidian around your spire.  I assume it is surrounded lava, and that is why you cannot get in?  Dig some water tunnels from the caverns above and carefully cast your way down.  Unless this trouble level is the one directly above the SMR.  Then i have no alternatives to what others have posted.

I eventually managed to drop a piece of land into the room and channel it but I have no idea why it was acting that lhat. Nevermind.
