Captain Holt: Loudly shout out profanities at whomever decided place this hole where you were standing.
Then proceed to examine surroundings.

Reg: blame the hole on kobolds.

holt snap your fingers to teach the young cadet about ambushing and give her a stern talking about not building up her observation skills since everyone can poof from view if you aren't facing them unless you have adept skills in noticing things. Also tell her to stop looking at that hole you don't know what random lair having monster could be in there.

Holt: Be rational and shout to the young recruit not to follow you into the hole, since that'd just make you both unable to get him out.

Reg: Jump in anyway, because kobolds are crafty ones, mimicking the captain's voice like that.

Jump down hole with your sword out! He was obviously taken by underground kobold tunnelers and needs your help!

And be sure to jump in head first. You need to see where you're going.

He is gone, unless one of you has a pick there is no way to get him out of the hole. Whatever you do, do not jump into the hole...

The presence of the Plump Helmet men and this adventure being older than July STRONGLY suggest that climbing back out of a hole is still impossible (34.11)

I think that elvish morals operate on the basic assumption that all life has an equal right to live.  They don't have a problem with anyone eating anything, plants, animals, or sapients, because most animals aren't picky about eating whatever they want, or killing in self-defense, and you have just as much a right to live and eat as they do.  It's killing trees they don't like, because you're killing a living thing that could not harm you and you can't eat it - a senseless act of murder from the elfy 'all life is equal' philosophy.

If you fill the hole with water slowly enough that he learns to swim before he drowns, you can get him out. If only there were a source of water...

It didn't work make Misty legendary, but she didn't have a weapon readied. Do it! What's there to lose?

besides landing on your weapon

No time to waste; your Captain's in trouble!  You hop down the hole, senses fine-tuned to detect any kobold shenanigans.

They're probably the ones responsible for all this, after all.

It doesn't look like he went too far, at least.

"You alright...Captain?" You say, still wary.  Just because he didn't turn invisible doesn't dismiss the fact that he could still be a kobold in disguise.

"For the love of...I twisted the ever-loving carp out of my ankle," Holt hisses.  It certainly looks painful, and you discount the 'Holt is a kobold' theory.  Kobolds don't have ankles; just that weird dog-leg thing.  That leaves just five other 'kobolds did it' theories.

"I got it figured out, Captain!" You press on.  "I bet the kobolds knew we were coming, so they dug this hole to trap us!  You know how they dig in the dirt, right Captain?  Well, what I'm thinking is-"

"Reg!"  Captain Holt whispers furiously, cutting you off.  "Keep your voice down!  For the love of Sunshield, if there was ever a time I needed you to focus, it would be now!  I need you to get out of here!"

"But...what about you Captain?  I can't just leave you here with the kobolds."  You glance about, half-expecting one to leap from the walls.

"REG."  He pauses to grit his teeth, though whether from frustration or pain you don't now.  "Don't worry about me.  I just need a minute then I'll climb on up out of this gods-forsaken hole right behind you.  Now go!"

You hesitate.  You can't just...you can't just abandon your Captain like that.  That's about the most undwarvenly thing a dwarf could do!

"Come on, Captain!  You know I can't-"

"REG, I am NOT going to ARGUE with you on this, I gave you a direct order-"

A deep grumble cuts him off.

"Oh...orc shit," he whispers.

NOW YOU WILL KNOW
WHY YOU FEAR THE NIGHT
