(SG) Caverns of Light
« on: February 15, 2014, 05:08:53 pm »

You lie your palms against the soft, spongy material of the giant mushroom you lay upon. It's been a long day, but you finally have time for yourself for one afternoon and you plan on using it for whatever you want. No responsibilities or duties or anything. You rest your back against your small backpack and fold your hands against your stomach. You gaze out into the distance of the grand cavern that you inhabit in all it's sparkling majesty.

Ahead of you lies the grand cavern of Krytia, one of the largest in the sprawling cavernous world that you inhabit. Fluorescent glowing flowers pock the ground in the fields in front of you. Around those flowers, tall monolithic mushrooms and stringy, fern-like trees grow in abundance. Farms holding herd of giant frogs and strange two legging reptilian beasts called trawlers roam about in small pens as they eat patches of glowing flowers or some of the pink-hinted grass. Some farms have abundant fields filled with various plants and vegetables. Boughs of smoke can be seen puffing up from the various farm machinery as they go about their daily business. A small river snakes around widely from the side of one of the caverns and cuts through the land like a silvery blue snake. A few paved bridges and roads can be seen going over the river, occasionally a small car puffs its way along these.

Above, in the ceiling of the cavern, as well as in the sides of the cavern, you can see the small blue glowing rocks which give light and life to the caverns. Widely abundant and jutting from every angle, these rocks are used for lights, power, magic, and holy remedies in every aspect of daily life. It is said that Astrea, the goddess of light and life, blesses every rock she touches and turns them to glowstone for us. At the center of the grand cavern ceiling is a large monolithic glowstone, called the firestone, that shines brighter than any else. The grand stone lies above the capital city of New Krytia.

You yawn and gaze behind you, turning your body on the mushroom slightly. Behind you lies the city of New Krytia. In comparison to the rest of the cavern, this city beams brighter and more vibrant than anything else. Large steel buildings extend to the sky and seem to almost glisten in the sparkling light of the firestone. Even from here, on the outskirts of the city, the sounds of cars and people can be vaguely heard. Surrounding the city is a large shanty town filled with the poorest of the poor. They lie in the shadow of the city as the people there mill about their lives in scrap sheet houses and concrete buildings.

It's said that years ago, this was all just stone and spears... when the dark days happened. The dark days caused a massive purge of the population, entire cities burned, populations were decimated, the city kings and queens were in shambles. That is until the two heroes of old, the champions of Astrea, came and halted the dark times and pushed back the darkness. The heroes, though, were never formally known and their names have been lost to the ages. After that, the governments collapsed and nobody could take up the handle. That is... nobody except the church of Astrea. The church began a revolutionary program called unification in which formal monarchies were liquified and all government positions came to the church. There were some that resisted, but in their shattered state that did not last long. Now, all of the cities of the world fly under the banner of unification and the paladins enforce the law and the holy law without impunity.

Life in New Krytia is hard but hard work and a little elbow grease allows you to stay healthy so far. At least you haven't been accused of being a blood mage by a paladin or stumbled into a nest of giant spiders. Though history is starting to give you a headache. Today is your afternoon to do whatever you want and you won't let anyone get in the way of that.

You sigh, and pull out your wallet and look at your ID,

+1, because weapons. And best bloodtype.

Then you get cities like Paris where you should basically just kill yourself already.

You won’t have to think anymore: it’ll be just like having fun!

On your ID it reads in sterile black ink,

Name: Orinius Loreh
Age: 27
Profession: Weaponsmith
Bloodtype: O+

You put away your ID and wallet into your pants pocket and continue to gaze out towards the cavern. You've been around for a good bit now and have been working with weapons almost your entire life. When it comes to firearms, there isn't anyone that understands them better than yourself. You've even learned how to fold glowstone orbs into your weapons to enchant them with holy power. This is a time-tested skill that some never master though it always came easy to you.

You live in a small apartment in the upper city where living is not too expensive and not too dangerous or crime ridden. From working with weapons, your eyesight is very good and perceptive, you are stronger than most, though you struggle with running and endurance due to years of working with smoke and glowstone dust. You don't really mind, though, as you never had to run from anyone before in your life. Things tend to come to you easily and problems tend to work out without much drama or strife.

In your backpack you are currently carrying a blanket in case you wanted to have a picnic, a small batch of fruit, a few strips of giant frog jerky, and a glass bottle of Nikki cola. In your pockets is your wallet with 20 Yitzen, an ID, a smartphone, and an unused coupon for Ammo and Axle monthly. You are currently quite healthy and are enjoying the view ontop of a giant mushroom. It is currently 5:43 PM and the day is free for you to explore.

"You... ponder things for a while, and then deem the place worthy of your picknick-spot. A bit of fruit, a few bites of frog-jerky, maybe a nap on the blanket? Yeah, that doesn't sound half-bad. Not at all..."

Do Picknick. Eat Stuff. Try to nap a bit.

You sit up from your rather long daydream and then undo the straps on your backpack. You rummage around in your backpack, feeling around in it, before you pull out your picnic blanket and set it up on top of the mushroom. You then pull out your assorted fruits, your frog-jerky, and your cola and set it up neatly on the blanket. Everything must be tidy and organized as you are not some barbaric brute who can't hold his hunger.

After everything is set up, you gorge yourself on your various foods. The jerky tastes a bit too salty but the texture is smokey and nice. The fruit and cola go down quite easily and bring a sugary swing to your meal. You toss away the remnants of your meal over the side of the mushroom into the grass below. You see a few small animals grab the leftovers and scurry into small holes to nibble on whatever was left.

After eating your meal, you begin to feel sleepy and start to doze off. You lay on your back and use the leather bag as a pillow and watch the small bats and birds above dance in the air. You wonder if there could have been a more serene day. Eventually, your eyes become too heavy and you drift off to sleep.

Darkness surrounds you as you drift off and your mind slowly wanders into a troubling dream that you can't seem to break free from. In your dream you are tied down to the roof of a truck as it edges closer and closer to a group of hooded black robed men and women. As the truck approaches the horde, they split in two like a silent wave. You can hear each of them saying in hushed tones, "Liars! They Lie!liars... Do not listen... She will make you suffer! The light is darkness... LIARS!"

The truck comes to a stop and a man with the head of a raven and a cloak draped in raven's feathers appears from the crowd. His arms look to be bleeding a black ichor and his drab clothing is decorated with skulls. He approaches you in slow, methodical steps where each boot print appears to leave the rock darker than what it was before. You struggle on the truck, try to scream out, but nothing escapes your throat. The man draws a dagger made of pure light, filled with some sort of blindingly brilliant blue metal you've never seen before. He approaches you...

...and cuts your binds.

You awake in a cold sweat and gasping for breath. Your heart beats against your ribcage as if it was trying to tear itself free and run away itself. Slowly, you come to terms that it was just a dream and that you are fine after you pat yourself down. You wipe away the sweat on your forehead and then pack up your blanket into your backpack. You check your phone in your pocket to see what time it is and see that it is currently 11:23 PM. It's quite late... and the walk home might be dangerous. You scold yourself on being so careless and oversleeping.

You stand up for a moment and strap the backpack onto your back and then look out towards the city. You think about what to do from here and where you could go. Ducking through the shanty town would be a quick way to get back to your apartment but it may be a bit of a shifty way to get home. Going the long way around the shanty town is a possibility too, though a bit of a stretch when it comes to time. It's about time to leave this mushroom anyways, you've got real work to do in the morning. Head Paladin Rulus is expecting that rifle to be finished by next week.

You decide that you should cautiously take a route back home tonight, there's no hurry anyways. You grab onto the edge of the mushroom and then slowly shimmy yourself downwards to the ground. You land softly on the ground of the forest and begin to make your way back towards the road. Bits of bluish green dust slowly sprinkles down towards the ground from the silently shifting mushroom trees. A small scurrying creature can be seen darting along in the pinkish tall grass just beyond your sight.

Eventually you make it to the road and the outskirts of the shanty town. The shanty town looks to be in rougher shape than usual and it seems to be growing every day. Beggers fill the streets and hold out small bowls for people just as poor as themselves to offer money. The buildings are nothing more than concrete and sheets of metal plastered to create a workable building. Some people gather around a small burning barrel and warm their hands around the fire.

You pace onwards, determined not to enter such a spot of such ill repute as it may hold thieves or muggers of some sort. You walk some distance around the shanty town on the lonely highway, very few cars pass by as you walk along. You faintly hear the sounds of a gunshot coming from the shanty town as well as some dogs barking.

After a brisk walk you make it to the outskirts of a safer part of the city. You begin to walk inwards into the city and the buildings around you grow in scope and size. Blinding lights and advertisements blare all around you, there is a neon sign for the Red Rock Cafe, there are floating terminals powered by glowstone orbs showing the news silently bobbing up and down along the sidewalks just above where a person's head would be, and the faint smell of cigarettes and food assaults your senses. It isn't too long to get to your apartment now.

Though the sound of commotion quickly snaps your eyesight to the left. You see a paladin, dressed in kevlar and adorned in dark blue clothing studded with glowstone, dragging an old man out of a building and see him throw the old man to the sidewalk.

The paladin yells, "By suspicion of practicing blood magic upon the testimony of multiple witnesses, you are under arrest and will be brought to the ministry for questioning! Do you understand these charges?"

The old man cowers on the ground and whimpers, "I don't know what you are talking about! I live alone here! I haven't done anything wrong! Please someone help!"

That old man is under suspicion of practicing forbidden magic! Nothing we do or say - safe of killing the paladin - will change anything for the accused. Thou whatever we do, may fall back on us in a very negative light, should their suspicions be found to be correct.

I say, we take a quick look at the old man, and unless we know him, we just be on our way. And maybe giving a curt greeting to the paladin, should we know him - not unprobable, given our workplace. Even if we do know the accused and deem him innocent, the most we ought to do is voice is our surprise - or our suspicion that he just might be innocent.
