I had the same mission, but I went to a forest 'around the area' and it was pretty okay.
I think as long as you get the enemies right you should be fine.

Then again, that'll be where they spawn

Tried some of the advice in here.  Did pretty well for a few missions, then watched a feasted nachzehrer solo basically my entire fucking company.  This game does not want me to play it.  It seems to actively want to make me quit again.

Nachzehrers are interesting because the fight has a puzzle part.
Never kill them with ranged weapons away from your line because their buddies will eat the corpse in the following turn. Always try to kill them when one of your bros is ready to step on the hex where the corpse is, so they won't feast.
The big ones can become a big problem if you leave them unchecked. Make them the n.1 priority, especially if they eat one of your brothers. As always, nets are very useful.

Also, exploit their weaknesses.
They have no armor and low morale, so use swords and cleavers to generate high hp damage and wounds.

Once you figure out how to prevent them from feasting, they become free exp.

Yeah, I've had it before, and the region was literally just south of the town.

Don't be afraid to lower the difficulty for a playthrough. The game also really encourages learning from lost battles. New enemies will always use new tactics.

The fight started with a fully feasted one.  I couldn't do anything about it.

Again maybe it changes later on but the line between surviving and being fucked is so thin that lost battles are hard to recover from.  I just reload if I get dumpstered, the game's too swingy and random early on to deal with that shit.

A big one can be a royal pain in the ass when you are starting out, no doubt about it. I think they have over 300 HP and also high melee attack. Keep using nets on him, surround him and focus him down fast.

The early game can be brutal, but you shouldn't get your company completely destroyed. A few deaths here and there are fine, but a total wipe means there's something wrong in your strategy.
If a specific enemy is giving you too much trouble, avoid them completely for a couple weeks.

In the first 20-30 days you should be looking for potential loot, so you are mostly looking for brigand groups. The ideal composition is a bunch of thugs with a few raiders (use daggers to loot their armor).
Second option should be small/medium groups of wiedergangers without nasty stuff like geists or necromancers. Armored wiedergangers are another good source of armor.
Ancient dead are also decent, but stay away from legionaries. The auxiliaries drop helms and weapons/shields you can use for a while.

If you can't find these enemies, your other options are:
- small groups of werewolves or nachzehrers
- SMALL groups of orc youngs (kill the ones with cleavers and head splitters first).

Tried being more aggressive, finding it a little easier.  Moving forward and hitting them head on when they first advance, instead of waiting back with spears and shields, instead of letting them group up the way they want to

Spears and shields are great against zombies, ghouls and other non-intelligent attackers. Archers and maces are great against human foes. In general, longaxes are the best thing ever because reach 2 and can split shields. My only two-handers are longaxes, with the exception of the banner carrier. I do have a specialist for every weapon type usually if I can, though, in case I find a legendary weapon of the type.

Currently up against orc warriors any my combo of swords, spears and cleavers is going awfully.
On the one hand I could always switch up my weaponry, but I've already taken a bundle of masteries so I don't know how well that would work.

Learning a mastery doesn't mean you are forced to use that weapon only.
Against orc warriors anti-armor weapons are critical. With swords and spears it's gonna take ages, while they destroy your armor and shields, generate all sorts of interesting injuries and make you bleed like a fountain.
You need billhooks, hammers and polehammers. You'll be using the regular attacks, so it's fine without the mastery.
Focus your anti-armor weapons on one of two of them and then move to the next.
Maces are also good to deplete their fatigue pool, wich isn't impressive to begin with.
Nets, as always, are super-important to delay some of them and make them waste fatigue.

As a general rule, you should always adapt your setup according to the enemy.
One thing is fighting 12 orc youngs and 2 warriors. Another thing is fighting 7 warriors.

In any case, don's stress too much about masteries. I don't even take a mastery on some of my bros. They range from decent to excellent, but against an orc warrior an un-mastered hammer will always be more useful than a mastered spear.

Who the fuck came up with alps?  Who decided that was a good idea?

I'm adapting my setup according to the enemy, and the enemy is this fucking game.

Alps and Hexes are probably my least favorite of the new enemies. The best ways to fight them are generally annoying and time consuming. And the more there are the higher the chances the fight goes from annoying to super deadly. I generally avoid any fights with them above a 1 skull, no matter how good my group is.

Alps I wish were paired with a creature with direwolves or the apes for fights. I like how they change the way you have to respond to them. I don't like that any fight involving more than 2 of them is guaranteed to be over half an hour. It also would make apes/spiders/wolves more threatening after early game.

Tried to lure a bunch of ork warriors into a swamp so that I could use terrain better.
Terrible idea. Now it's an ambush. Can't savescum, can't retreat. Not sure what to do.

If aren't against save-scumming, you should re-load the map until you start in a favorable position. If you can manage a line of solid ground against murky water it will be a huge advantage.
