I have never, ever taken mafia notes, and I hear that I used to be pretty good.

I take no notes, but make up for that with occasional in-depth full game reevaluations.

Me neither. I only played once and was told I did pretty good (was Town, got lynched, iirc :v) but I don't particularly believe that. :S

I only take notes when I'm doing a reread and have other things occupying my mind.

Then again, I suck at scum hunting and even at mafia as a whole, so cup of salt. :p

Making notes on roleclaims saves a lot of effort, I wouldn't bother with anything else though.

I've never taken notes. I've never found it necessary to do so. I already have my posts (and scumchat if applicable) to look through if I need to remember who I suspect or what I was doing. And there's already a written record of everything that's happened in the game; if I need to look up something I just look through the thread to find it.

As well as the claims, I usually keep track of all the cases+votes in the game, it's a very concrete reminder of who's been actively hunting and who's been coasting along.

I haven't taken notes before.
I considered it once, and decided it was too much work.

I took notes a couple of times. The amount of work it took wasn't worth it. Maybe in a small game... But even then it's iffy.

You know, I've been thinking, and I had a question to ask:

In many games with a lot of roles and role-powers, I've heard people say they don't expect much scumhunting in the game due to the night powers.  I was wondering what you think a good balance of night power level is in order to promote scumhunting, and how much use you think insight-based scumhunting is.

Here's my two cents on the issue, but I'm relatively newish so take this with a grain of salt.  In all of the games I've played in (15?), I only can recall seeing one use of truly conversation and voting based insight that actually found a scum: TheDarkStar in BM XLV, who, D2, figured out I was scum by my actions.  Off the top of my head, I can't recall any other examples of this from any other game I've played.

What is far more common, I've noticed, is night power logic, and I can provide a couple of examples of this.  Choose your own mafia: fortune teller results allowed town to find the converter D2.  Supernatural 7: a series of interlocking claims and inspection results narrowed down the scumteam to a few potential people, who were summarily lynched.  These two are two that I've played in, I'm sure there are many, many more out there.

Which leads to my other question: is there a happy medium? Where insight based scumhunting still has it's place, but people also have cool powers to play with and things to do with them?

I'd say that, of all the games I've played in, the game that I think was the closest to this medium was Supernatural mafia: everyone had a role that could do things, and in the end of the game that was really what won it, but the roles didn't have so many abilities and so much power that they completely eclipsed the day game entirely.

I've actually been secretly working on a Mafia game idea that should do something like that, where there are lots of powers, but if you rely solely on them, you'll have a hard time winning (or it will at least take a long time) in that you have access to a ton of things, but you have to spendtime investing in them to use them.

Don't forget about the day/night game interaction. There are many times when someone will see someone as scummy and then act on it - see my choice of Objective (iirc) for who to make useless (and eventually prove scum) in Choose-Your-Own-Mafia. He seemed scummy from the day, so I acted on it.

Yeah, players in high power games that under-estimate the day scum-hunting game are playing poorly.
