Speaking of balance, the first patch is out.

Among other notable things, accuracy of bombs and rockets is nerfed, the imperial cannon is buffed, and damage that's [edit: equal to or] below the armor value has a chance of doing 0 damage. (Before, a gun would always do 1 'scratch damage' which meant gatlings and flamethrowers were quite dangerous regardless of armoring.)

Says the campaign AI is improved as well, which I'm looking forward to looking at.
Oooo...

Sounds good.

------------

I too thought bombs were OP but as I ramped up the difficulty I learned that making fragile little things that rely on RNG not exploding you is not a viable strategy.

So I switched to flamethrowers and boarding craft.

But then I learned that while immensely effective, they also regularly died on their missions, making it so I would have to build entirely new ones every single battle. This is not remotely viable when you're being accosted on all sides and have a limited amount of shipyards to build from.

So I resorted to the original strategy of making tanky cannons.

Not as brutally effective as the above two strategies, but way more versatile and survivable. Which is what matters in the campaign. I also have one or two specialist units in each formation. So boarders or flamethrowers or bombers or what have you.

That's what I found works the best on Imperial difficulty with 8x AI income.

Also landships. Lots of landships.

I find the new version extra-buggy.... dozens of CTds

Edit: apparently I´m not the only one. Ship design screen is bugged

lot landship is fine only if you winning. otherwise the first landship getting killed will bunch up all the others.

Only if you move landships. Which IMO you shouldnt. Great siege platforms, not so great at chasing enemies down.

The trick is to load them with lots of ammo stores, so in the event that the landship is compromised, the whole thing explodes and leaves the way clear for those looking to move past.

Legs can walk over everything. Not that you need to since you're not moving anyway like ChairmanPoo said.

Landships are fast moving, cheap, and ridiculously effective for their cost. They're the best thing to spam when the AI outnumbers you 3 to 1.

Saw a mod that added air mines.  Thought "that's neat."  Looked at it and realized they were inverse bombs.  They are slow moving so they aren't a 100% counter to bombs but they are a good early game equalizer against bombers/high flyers.

rifles fire upward, a tower of them is a perfect early bomber defense

How does this thing run on an older rig? Like a gen2 or 3 i5 laptop with 4gigs of ram and only integrated graphics? Has an ssd though.

Will it get clunky in big battles, or still just fun enough to try out. Because this game sounds like my jam.

It can get a bit choppy with large vehicles and lots of crew (pathfinding, etc.) but it generally runs pretty smooth.  With older specs and integrated graphics you might have trouble with conquest mode, but it really isn't hugely demanding most of the time.

Hey, long time no see Airships. Remember this game?

Well today it got a substantial update, revamping and deepening the campaign mode.

Given how long the update has been in development, figured I'd do a bit of necro in the name of awareness.

Now this is another long-runner. I seem to remember them almost consistently releasing updates once in a couple months or thereabouts, for years.

Wonder what the DLC would be. Sea ships, submarines, and sea monsters?

Back in the first couple of years ships was often brought up by the dev as a potential DLC, if I recall. Given how long it's been can't say if they feel the same way now, though.
