Long live the Queen!

Indeed she had.  Queen Moldath Yellowboards had ascended to the throne after her father Komrek Wheellovely had been struck down by the hated Bronze Collossus Ngog Scraperoared the Bold Hardiness, who had attacked the capital Boatescorts in the year 21 after the Founding of The Calm Door.

This was over two hundred and twenty five years ago- far longer than a dwarf had any right to live.  She should have gone to the halls of the elders long ago.  But this was glossed over.  Blessed by the gods, they said.  Favored by Thiken Perfecteagle, they said.

Nonsense, the lot of it!

We knew the truth, though.  Both her and her father had a grudge against Tumam the Dignified Moral, and had each in their reign profaned his temple.  For their blasphemy, they both were cursed with vampirism.  While her father had fallen in battle, she had survived many trials in office, and still reigned.

Early in her reign, she passed a set of laws known as the Edicts of Order, but there was nothing good about it.  It allowed for imprisonment without trial of those suspected of "disrupting the traditions of the elders" and those who were imprisoned never returned.  We had word from those closer to the inner circle that these Edicts were used to satiate her... need.  It was hard to estimate how many had died, but it had to be thousands.

There were plans to overthrow her, but she had the advantage of a much longer worldview; generations to plot, plan, and conspire to protect herself.  We had less.  What we needed was a base to organize.  This is why we set out... but I fear treachery.  There may be a spy working for the queen among us.  Even so, we must do what we can.  Start a settlement.  Train fighters.  Send arms back to the capital.  Depose the Blood Queen, so we can truly be free.

Welcome to Long Live the Queen, a Mafia themed succession fort!  Brainstormed with the help of the fine folks down there, this is a tale of treachery, deceit, and rebellion.

What is this?
A succession fort with a theme.  It started out from a suggestion in one of the Mafia threads, and evolved into this.  The theme and backstory is prewritten- what comes next is up to the player.  Are there spies?  Is it all just a bunch of paranoia?  Are you a spy yourself?  The choice is yours!

Is this vanilla DF?
It sure is.

Can I play?  I've never played Mafia before.
You sure can!  I'm not looking for that when taking turn signups or Dwarfing requests.  That said, you're more than welcome to come down and join us!

Will you Dwarf me?
Sure.  Just ask, and you'll get in.

Can I use...
Please don't use any exploits or third-party tools that give you an extra edge.  Things that just simplify management or viewers are fine.

What about savescumming?
Don't savescum just because you messed something up.  If the fort is wiped out or unplayable, then it can be considered.

What about sieges?
I'd prefer to see something other than a huge number of cage traps.

Come one, come all! See the magnificent, the absolutely SPLENDID... JOKER CHALLENGE!

In the spirit of Mafia, I have decided to offer my dwarf up to the gods as the Joker. The Joker is a special type of third-party who's goal is usually to get themselves lynched. In this case, the Joker is a reviving, useless dwarf, who wants to die in as many ways possible, and the most interesting ways possible. Your job, to get points, is to kill him in the coolest and most original ways possible.

(No atom-smashing or drafting him and making him stand on a spike trap, please.)

Rules:
1. Every death, to gain points, must be original. The same thing can't be done twice.
2. The more original and fabulous, the more points.
3. Really, no atom-smashing.

Go!

The four of us met in secret, months before setting out.  We used codenames to coordinate
in case someone got ahold of our notes.  Webadict and Dakarian were the masterminds of the plot, with their contacts running all over The Calm Door.  Org was an interesting dwarf.  Her best friend was taken by the Blood Queen and presumably sucked dry, leaving her an unusually terse person, but rather adept at determining the loyalty of someone; she had several clever tricks up her sleeve.

The meeting started with a toast, as it always should.

"Death to the Queen!"

We quickly got down to business.  We knew that we had reached our limit here in Boatescorts; the Royal Guard was actively searching for us.  We had to move out.  One of Webadict's informants had given her a map.

"So that's it?" I said.  "Where the revolution will form?  How do we know it's safe?  Where'd this map come from?"

Webadict sighed, her fists clenched in front of her.  "It came from the Royal Geological Survey office.  A surveyor is sympathetic to our cause, and got this map from within.  He assures us there's an iron deposit close to the surface for us to use."

"How do we know we won't have the army coming to slay us all in a month's time?" asked Dakarian.

"A deployment of that size would be far too obvious, even if we were discovered that quickly.  We shouldn't have to worry about anything.  Should we be found out, I'd watch for more sinister threats."  Webadict waved dismissively.

"Supplies?" asked Org, keeping a mind for the practical.

I leaned forward.  This was my area.  "I've arranged with a local shipping company who understands the problem.  They'll do their best to send a caravan as often as they can, which may be yearly.  We can send arms back here as well- any sort of trade will be the cover we need.  Plus, Dakarian, didn't you have a contact with the humans?"

He nodded.  "They hold no love for the Blood Queen. They should be amenable.  We'll be downriver from the treehuggers as well- should they find us, we may be able to buy some food and drink from them."  He grunts.  "We must even deal with them to make this work."

Webadict leaned forward.  "It'll be us four plus a few others.  I have some people lined up whom I believe we can trust- I'll see who is willing to go."  Dakarian frowned at this.

"Must we?  The more that come, the more the risk of a traitor."

Web just shook her head.  "And start this settlement with four?  We need others; dwarves with the skills that a fresh outpost requires.  I trust my pick and your skill in stone, but who among us can gather food?

It was true.  I was a brewer and mechanic, while Org was a trained smith of arms and armor.  We didn't have anyone who could grow food.

"Fine," I said.  "We get a few more.  No more than twice this many, though- we can't just all leave at once.  Later, perhaps, more can come; but for now, we must keep things small.  Agreed?"

"Agreed," chorused the other three.  It was settled, then.  We would set out.  We would found an outpost.  We would train an army.

We would cut down the Queen.

---

A week before the new year, we left.  It was a short journey, so it wouldn't take long to get there, even traveling at night as we did.  Webadict and Dakarian had found three more to accompany us.

Pandarsenic was a quiet lady who was good with wood- a useful trait for a fledgling outpost.  I vouched for her, so we believe she can be trusted.  Plus, any extra axe-hand is a welcome addition.

Vector had actually worked with both Webadict and Dakarian a long time in the past, though she had been travelling for many years and was out of contact.  She had tended a farm in the past, so she knew her way about many different pastoral fields.

The last one was Cheeetar.  He had served in the military, and was trained in both battlefield medicine and siege weaponry.  Despite his background, he had deserted the Queen's army and spent several years hiding out- he wanted no part of serving under a bloodsucker.

We seven set out under cover of darkness, with what supplies we could smuggle or steal.  It wouldn't last us forever, but with luck and skill, we could manage.  We called ourselves Nelzurùnil Nazush, the Invisible Hammerer of Blood.  Our fort Zonien "Helmhill" for the hill we'd found on.

As the old saying goes...

STRIKE THE EARTH!

Yes, all of you will be dwarfed.  Persus, you're first in line; blame Vector for reminding me about Pandar.

1st of Granite, 251.

We arrived on the first day of the year.  We parked the wagon at the top of a hill next to the river canyon.  On the other side, a tributary poured over the edge in a towering waterfall, kicking spray everywhere.  It was rather a lovely spot, if you cared for the aboveground world.  No wonder the elves settled nearby.

Upstream a bit, there was a flat area from where the river fed into the canyon.  It'd be a good place to set up a waterworks, should we need mechanical power.

Webadict, Dakarian, and I stood at the edge of the canyon as the others began to unload supplies.  The three of us had grabbed the picks and were surveying the area.  The river had cut deep into the rock, and several layers of strata were visible. You could easily see-

"Mudstone.  I hate working in mudstone."  I spat over the edge.  "Rock should be grey, black, or white.  Not brown."

Webadict laughed.  "Well, we wanted to work deep, didn't we?  Getting under would put us closer to the river level anyway.  Looks like a nice gabbro layer.  No harm in digging down a bit more, right?  Let's get the food inside, at any rate."

That made sense.  We surveyed a bit more to plan the future a bit more.  The canyon wall meant that the rear was wholly protected.  It'd be trivial to reshape the hilltop to prevent access except by the front, and then later add in walls to further reinforce the area.  Cheeetar knew how to construct siege engines- a couple catapults up here could keep the area locked down nicely.  Defense shouldn't be a problem.  A few bridges across the canyon, built midway down, should give us plenty of access to the far side without compromising security.

Yes.  This site would do nicely.

Everyone got to work.
