Sibrek is the only one in the fort who knows such lists. Want to visit her office?

Yes. If door is locked, throw tantrum and deconstruct door.

We should find this Urist fellow. I think he might be close to failing an artifact. Catten, open your list and let's find him!
Oh, this must be a misunderstanding. Mayors aren't the ones who do lists. That's the bookkeeper's job.
Ask her, then.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
At least she's here. There's a lot of empty in the fort today.
"Hi Sibrek! I'm here to ask where brewer Urist is keeping at."

"-I know, Catten. I know everything, remember?"
"Right. So where is he? ..Do I have a note on me?"
"No, that'd.. cost me too much paper. He's in one of the workshops near the butcher. You know, near the stairs to the magma furnaces."
"Thanks. I'll see you later."

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
"Ooh! Are those strawberries?"
"Yeah?" Huh. Last year's migrants must've brought their supply with them. Why did they leave it in the hall?
"I want some."
"No, you'll puke."
"Please? I haven't eaten for weeks!"
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
"But if you throw up, you're drinking from the laundry barrel next."
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
"Hold still."
"I am holding still! I can't even move. Stop spi-Mph!"
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
"There."
"I want more!"
"You really are just skin and bones, huh? All right."
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
"Happy?"
"Mmmth-hmm!"
Good. We've wasted more than enough time here.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
What have we got here? Go ask her.
"Who are you?"
"My name is Zaneg Snarlanvils. Wh-"
"What happened to your clothes?"
"Nothing fits me, okay?"
"So you tied yourself to a short skirt with bunch of socks?"
"Like you're the one to talk!"
"You're even wearing them as gloves!"
"Wh-Well you've got a d-drooling.."
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
"I won't say another word. So what's a child like you doing, hauling a pick about, anyway?"
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
"Oh, Sibrek offered to get me to the Glazednets university if I mine away the floor to the butchers' workshops. Aparantly there's something that could wreck the fort in there. She said she'll have a couple of proffessional miners dump the entire compartiment in the caverns later on, but they weren't available. I guess maybe the animals had syndrome dust in them?"
This is bad..
"Urist is in there! And you're going to dump him into the caverns?! The fort will die of thirst!
"The brewer? You must be mistaken. I saw him heading to the dining room on my way here, getting ready to have a good time. There's no way he's by the butchers' workshops. Anyway, I'm overjoyed that I'll get to get away from this fort before I become an adult. I won't have to spend my life being the size of a toddler! How great is that?"

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

>Rather than do something as destructive as collapse part of the fort into the caverns, let's try something less dangerous.  Reroute the water shown in this map to wash the butcher shop clean; that should get rid of the syndrome dust.

Aargh! I started sorting them in albums a while ago, but they seemed to work just fine back then. I'll fix up the img codes in a moment.
And thanks for the tip on the characters. I'll try to make the backgrounds less noisy.

"Cave-ins are dangerous. Why not mine open part of the old fort and flush the syndrome dust away?"
"But then I'd be disobeying Sibrek. I'm not risking my ticket to wearing normal people clothes just because cave-ins make you nervous. Besides, what if it isn't syndrome dust that's in there?"
____________
I'm not shooting this down, Zaneg just isn't convinced.

Bumping up my own thread. Och, the depravity of it.

There's other ways to go about this than to just tell the child to do what you want. There's all kinds of ways to persuade people, not to mention that it the child needn't be the one to do the mining per-se.

There are also different assesments of the situation available than "the butchers' workshops need a wash", if you're so inclined.

"Here, have a sock. Hell, have TWO socks. Just dig that channel."

Dwarves dig socks.

"Stop making fun of me!"

She's wearing a makeshift outfit out of nothing but socks and a skirt, and is pretty self-concious about it, remember?

"Nonono, I'm not! It's just that you don't have any socks left for your feet! Seriously, just dig the fucking channel."
