Safe aquarium design

I was planning to create an aquarium by first building fortifications and then windows next to the fortifications (windows to be the transparent liquid tight walls and fortifications to prevent enemies within the water filled space from swimming to the window and breaking it. But then I remembered that enemies can swim over submerged fortifications. But then again enemies need a space to stand on next to the object they attack to break the object.

So how would that design actually work and would it be safe, would the fortifications prevent enemies breaking the window walls of the giant aquarium and potentially submerging the entire world.

Actually, I'm pretty sure they can only be pushed through the fortifications through water pressure. While swimming, but they need help.

That would work.  Of course, juxari might want to put fortifications outside the windows just in case a building destroyer finds its way into the hallways.

Well, the easiest way to do this would be not to let building destroyers into your aquarium.

I'm planning to create an artificial lake around my castle and the z-1 level would be the aquarium level with window walls. It's a cool idea but if it's defensively unfeasible I'm not going to do it. And I am probably going to put fortifications on both sides of the windows just to be sure.

I think they don't try to path through fortifications, though they can technically move through them.
Also remember that building destroyers can destroy buildings from a certain distance if they can path to it, even if they're not touching the building in question. So you could open up the hatches to drop a new building destroyer into the aquarium and suddenly all the windows burst, pushing the building destroyers out through the fortifications into your viewing areas.

This kind of catastrophic failure however is simply too awesome to even think of avoiding it, and you should probably begin designing the aquarium specifically to fail.

Make walls of glass blocks, instead of "windows".  Constructions should be indestructible.

I'm 90% sure that if they aren't touching the bottom, they can't destroy stuff, so you could just dig one tile down on the outermost flooded tiles.

I agree with that. Flying creatures can't destroy buildings while flying, swimming ones should not be able to do so while swimming

Wouldn't this still flood the fortress if a window gets broken? Seems to me like fortification + space (2x?) + window is what you would need or just make sure that the windows are out of range of the bottom of the moat.

Yes, but the window won't get broken, because the building destroyer won't be able to path to it. If the building destroyer can't calculate a path to the object in question, it can't break it, regardless of distance. If swimming creatures don't path through fortifications, this allows dwarves to look in without the window being in danger of getting smashed.

I guess the way to go is build fortification + window + fortification. I suppose this construction will be 100% safe unless a building destroyer that somehow gets on top of the submerged fortification has the ability to smash the window (gets the ability to path to the window once on top of the fort)?

AFAIK swimming creatures can pass fortifications if the water level is exactly 7/7, otherways it's impenetrable.
So basically you can put almost anything in the pool, if the depth doesn't exceed the safe zone.
