I like to know a handful of useful basic skills or tricks that would be pertinent in survival, such as flint napping.
DF's pottery made me curious about how to make a simple glaze that could be used for waterproof pots. Turns out, you can just use ash and water and bake it in a very intense oven. So, with that I could potentially create waterproof and fire resistant pots in the very unlikely event I'm stranded in the wilderness, so there's that.

Not like that matters, in the same situation I'd likely starve soon anyway.

DF has taught me that it's not the end of the journey, nor the journey itself, but the bandits who rob you that make the fun happen

DF has taught me never, ever play around with cliffs. Also that carp are really dangerous if you aren't carful.

That if I ever become a necromancer, the best way to fuck up the earth in a day is to bring all the mussel shells to life.

Oh good lord, take that a step further: Diatomaceous Earth becomes some sort of unholy razor-sharp nano-fog.  Entire sedimentary layers bend to your will...

Geology, military tactics, intelligent design of defensive structures, how to abandon all sense of morality to create horrors of dwarven magnificence. How some materials make for very bad lifeforms, and some make for very powerful monsters.

That having the best soldiers in the world means nothing against a group of irate polar bears (You fought hard Hammerlord Goden, R.I.P.)

-That all the tiny little details in a society matter and shape her into something unique.Everybody and everything is special to some degree.
-How steel is produced, what is a flux stone, that pig iron is a thing and some thing about alloys

Hard to find the words as not to be a total jerk about it.
More and more it seems like games are basically just wrapping paper around the same game engine. So something along the lines of non-Toady game developers just don't try all that hard anymore.

Noooooo you don't say? I thought that Call Of Duty 19 was a fresh take on the "Get gun fire gun kill mans" formula.

Dwarf Fortress taught me that idealism rarely survives contact with leadership.
And that keas and langurs are the worst animals in the world.
And that the worst enemy you'll ever meet is the little voice that says Hey, this would be a cool/awesome/funny thing to do!/I wonder what happens if...
Oh, and a basic knowledge of the usefulness of various metals in weapon form.

Exactly why I do say. I think that somewhere between the SNES generation and the PS2 generation of consoles console gaming hit it's peak and shortly thereafter console gaming died.

- Never, ever, ever, EVER trust anybody to help you. They will jump in a river, or go on break, or hide in their rooms, or just simply not do what they're told and you'll never know why.

Geology and metallurgy.

And creating the gnomes involved a lot of research regarding the development of technology from the discovery of electricity all the way up to the transistor.
