I could maybe understand being a little frustrated by those things, but really that's just good filmmaking. Don't want to over explain things and tie up all the loose ends. That'd rob it of some of the magic.

I actually disliked it for resolving the mystery like it did. For me, the whole appeal of the film was in juggling the is he/isn't he (nuts) question, whereas having it actually answered either way is not that interesting. I would have been quite satisfied with an ambiguous ending.
Or at the very least if the reveal was somehow more tied in with who the guy was. Like, maybe we're given a hint that he stumbled upon the machine accidentally. Or had the right mental capacity but some PTSD had made him retreat into obscurity. Or maybe he built some monstrosity from broken toasters and KFC buckets and it just happened to work. But it turns out he was a genius inventor all along, capable of building a tacky S-F machine despite the entire film not giving you any reason to believe he could.

Look at how Swiss Army Man handled it (mild spoilers if you haven't seen it) - the whole film you're not sure if the guy is an unreliable narrator that's nuts out the wazoo, or if the film is actually set in a magical reality. At times you're teased towards one or the other, but by the end it is left to your whimsy if the guy was vindicated or if he let himself go completely bonkers one last time - and the film has prepared you to buy into either outcome.
This same kind of ambiguity was handled similarly in Pan's Labirynth. You're given a more realistic interpretation, as well as one that is fantastical but plausible enough for you to let yourself slip into believing it for the sake of the characters you've grown to like.

Here, all of a sudden there's no doubt. They guy did build a time machine, just like that. The reveal is cheap and grating.

I dunno, I didn't get that vibe from it at all. Did he not give you an eccentric, possibly sperg-y, reclusive genius impression throughout the film? There was never much doubt that he had built at least something.
I'm not sure why that part in particular upsets you. I feel like having a KFC-bucket time machine would have just been silly, and if he'd found it that would have invalidated all the earlier scenes and dialogue about him stealing parts for the machine.
Plus, if there had been no reveal, we would never have seen the reactions of everyone watching the machine take flight. I loved that part to (mostly) end the film, with the shock on their faces.

I don't think the ending spoiled the ambiguity, either. My view of the scene was that nobody really knows what happened, there. For all we (or the shocked onlookers) know, that contraption just vaporised the both of them.
It's just nicer to assume it somehow worked.

   

I haven't seen Swiss Army Man, so I didn't read (much of) your comparisons to it.

Can't say I'm super surprised, but I'll withhold judgment until I actually watch the movie.  Supposedly they had to reshoot one of the scenes near the end of the movie because the prescreen audience started laughing at the fight with Palpatine or something.  That's not a good indicator.

I won't be able to see the movie till this weekend, but I did see a bit of the final fight.  It's bad.

I'm thinking about spending my saturday doing a Movie Speedball, watching Cats and Star Wars back to back.
