I don't understand why you need magma.

Well done OP, you've inadvertently weaponized ghosts.

I'm also currently doing testing on covering cave crocodiles on syndrome blood and lighting them on fire! Then shooting them at elves!

So: new idea!

  • Get forgotten beast with unconscious-inducing (paralyzing?) secretions
  • Breed Rocs above your entrance
  • Wait for enemies
  • Make rocs go to sleep
  • Drop rocs
  • ?
  • Pofit!

So in other words....

Rocs fall, everyone dies?

I have a large surplus of tame giant black mambas in my current fort. I've been using them against sieges here and there, and let me tell you... they are devastating. If you could manage to liberate a breeding pair from the elves (preferably through bloody murder) I think they would be ideal for your trap.
They're enormous, poisonous, sometimes rage, and lay 20-30 eggs at a time.

Also, if you're still looking for a name for this, I suggest the GAPZ trap (Gravity Assisted Petting Zoo). Or Dwarven Safari. Or GPS (Goblin Petsitting Service). Or LAC (Large Animal Collider). Or the ULATIRRTIF (Unnecessarily Long Acronym That Isn't Really Related To Its Function).

Surely rocks would perform the same function? Or is that not dwarfy enough

If your animals aren't expendable, you could always station a dwarf or two out there?

Nowhere near dwarfy enough. Also, not automatic.

So in other words....

Rocs fall, everyone dies?

Stone
A) doesn't reproduce
B) doesn't keep fighting after it falls
C) takes ages to haul in any large quantity

I think critters are the superior trap ammo. By a wide margin.

Turkeys.

Nesting turkeys + Nestboxes + Dropchute accumulator pit (+necromancer?) == FUN

Basically-- Retracting bridge "corridor" with several "safe" nestboxes at the far end, and some chained turkeys.
Turkeys lay inaccessable (and thus perfectly hatchable) eggs in the nest boxes, and produce poults 10 or so at a whack.
The poults accumulate in the corridor.  Periodically, retract the bridge, which drops the poults into the accumulator chamber below.
The accumulator chamber is ALSO a retracting bridge floor type corridor. Unlike the one above, there are no safe tiles.
As an optional enhancement, necromancer viewports can be installed, so that any dead bodies that form in the accumulator
end up as still "live" ammo. Undead creatures also gain more muscle mass due to a bug-- so the turkeys will be heavier when undead.

Drop the turkeys from the accumulator as needed/desired.

Cave dragons.

Heavy, tough, vicious, and so on, and they cannot fly so they land hard.

By the way, a visiting goblin master mistook my fort for a cave dragon kennel and now I have a whole bunch of them in cages. They are all good strong vicious named war cave dragons of the goblin civ. I don't really want to let him down (or her, goblins look all the same to me) so I'd like to raise a flock of my own, those poor beasts are so rare that they are pretty much endangered animals, too. And I would not want to let the goblins down by simply making lots of cave dragon roasts out of them.

As the initial plan, I'm thinking about chaining the females next to nest boxes with lots of cage traps close by to trap the hatchlings right away for loving safe care.

I'm pretty sure invaders' offspring can never be tamed

The offspring can be tamed, but not the individuals.
