Will the current version more-or-less work with 40.16?
To clarify, the current version (0.40.15-r1) will only work with 0.40.15 (possibly 0.40.14 as well), but it's fairly easy to compile from source for 0.40.16.

How soon, by the way?  I have a succession fort I'm trying to start, but one of the mods requires this, and considering the mods I'm using, I need the fixes of the most recent version so all the civs don't die quickly.

I give up! I have tried for an hour. Its driving me nuts. I just cant figure out how to clone the development branch instead of the main dfhack branch.

Im in windows 7 cmd, and I have successfully compiled the main branch before, so my environment is all set up and working.

instead of

git clone git://github.com/DFHack/dfhack.git

to start the list from the Compile.html

is there something like

git clone git://github.com/DFHack/develop/dfhack.git   or something to just clone the development branch?

or maybe its a fetch thing like  lethosor's instructions (on how to compile quiestust's early .14 build I followed, thanks!)

but way simpler cause i just need to fetch the develop branch of the main repo not a fork!!

I know there is a way, I know I am almost there, and have learned a little more by failing, but I am ready to move on, and know many people here have the git skills to help out. Please oh please help me. its driving me nuts

Thanks alot Dfhack team for so furiously coding away in these fast moving dwarfy times!

Or git checkout develop && git pull (which should automatically track origin/develop in a fresh clone).

Thank YOU!!   When I run the git command line program with no switches and it shows the usage info, -b is not on there, I would have never got that!

Already compiling, but check that option out as well. Seems I should know about both ways, how they differ and why and when to use either.


These are both good launching points for me, thanks again guys! I find the trick to learning new things is having a few different vectors, or seeds, to search out from.

Keep in mind that this will create a fresh clone of the repo - it's faster to simply use "git checkout develop" if you've already cloned DFHack.

Since 40.16 isn't here yet, is there a way to use 40.15 df hack with 40.16?
No. It won't recognize DF versions other than 0.40.14 or 0.40.15, and it could crash if you try to update symbols.xml with 0.40.16 symbols. (It's unlikely in this case, since the only changes I can see are naming changes, but it's generally not safe to use DFHack with an unsupported DF version.)
