You are an experimenting scientist.  You are tasked with splicing genes into a single-celled organism.  What do you do first?

Reserved. Actually working on a publication related to genomics right now. :-)

EDIT=
Spoiler: Felicia Hasting (click to show/hide)

"Lets start with melanoma!"

Splice the gene coding for ab-BRAF monoclonal antibody into the code for a GPCR such that the antibody is on the outside of my cells.

Name:Alex Lorian Raman
Goal:Finding even more ways to save people and creating an easily controlled organism
Reason for goal:Alex's mother is slowly dying, and he wants to find a way to help her. If he can't, he wants to control the organism as revenge

Specimen
What is it?: A Cell
Bonuses: Low Complexity (+1 to splice)
Penalties: Single-celled (No complex splices yet)

((How realistic is this going to be?))

At this stage, you can do what you want that a single-celled organism can take (no mouths or teeth).  If you modify it to be multicellular, then you have to consider the ability to get needed nutrients around efficiently.  Besides those two things, Magic (you can make an approximate using psuedo-science, though, such as launching fire from hands by having some substance able to be emitted from the hands that catches fire when in contact with the air) and some stuff too far out there (ie. creation of black holes or stuff in a similar vein.  If you are not sure, ask) not being allowed, and not jumping forwards quickly (Cell goes to cell colony, then microorganism (1/10 of a milimeter), very small organism (.5 - 1 centimeters), then small organism (25-50 centimeters), then medium organism (.5 to 1.5 meters), then human-sized organism (3 meters), then large organism (10 meters), then very large organism (15 meters plus).

((I meant do we actually have to have knowledge of gene splicing or does that just give us a bonus?))

((It's not a bonus, it limits you. It makes you puts around with functional molecular pathways as opposed to playing the damn game. :-) ))

You have knowledge, but I can see research into a stage giving a boost.
