This is the first time I've ever created tension with a building.

Huh.

It's not the building. It's the fact that low-level characters with no extraordinary abilities can literally feel the evil radiating off of it.

No, I meant in-party tension. Differently-aligned characters having different reactions immediately created a divide in opinions.

Anyway, you guys were right. This place is bad news for now.
It's largely railless, so it makes sense for us to find places we're underleveled for.
Which reminds me that I've finally figured out how to make sandbox campaigns work, which was, oddly enough, before the one with "Sandbox" in the name. You make a lot of places with interesting things sitting around, then give the player characters a motive to move around. Without interesting things, it's like a superflat Minecraft world, with villages turned off, on Peaceful. Without a motive, the players just sit around and don't know how to interact with the game world.

One easy way to provide motive force (heh) is to start the campaign with a handful of commonly known points of interest: famous treasures, ongoing conflicts, major recent news, and highly eligible royal heirs. Appealing, of course, to lootmonkeys, murderhobos, RPers, and fetishists respectively.

And that's how I read it.

Uh. Yeah.

This is what you get for posting in random threads you followed from the OOCaFQ thread.

You've already touched the event horizon, Frumple, there's no going back for you.

E: And a Candyland campaign setting would be hardcore.

Sorry about all this... hopefully I'll remember to update it on a regular basis now.

I never give up on a campaign until the DM dumps it into the sun.
